SRE302 - T1 - 2023 - Class 7 - Estimating Part 2

Here are the steps to build up the rate for class 3 formwork to columns: 1. Calculate the formwork area for a 450x450mm column that is 3m high: Area = (450mm x 450mm) x 3m = 1013.5 sqm 2. Calculate the materials cost: - Plywood: 1013.5 sqm x $30/m2 = $30.41 - Studs: 3m x 8 studs/column x $4.5/m = $108 - Clamps: 1013.5 sqm x 0.5m centres x $1.5/week = $15.20 - Nails: 1013.

Outline

1. Building up rates for reinforcement

2. Building up rates for formwork

- Class Activity
1. Building up rates for reinforcement

Reinforcement
• ASMM: “prices are to include for: Cleaning, cutting, bending,
fabricating, placing, temporary fixings and supports”.
• Subcontractors will perform this work either on a labour only, or
labour and material basis.

• Reinforcement
1- Re-bars
2- Mesh
1. Building up rates for reinforcement

1- Re-bars (Reinforcing bar):

Can be bought either in straight lengths (and any cutting, bending, etc. carried out by
steel fixer), or cut to size, bent, bundled and labelled by the supplier.
 From extrusion plant, bars are produced with diameters larger than their normal
size. This is known as ROLLING MARGIN.
 The weight of bars measured in the BQ will be based on the nominal diameter
 Actual weight purchased for will be for the slightly larger bars produced by the
effect of the rolling margin. An addition of 3% is usually made to the BQ
quantities to allow for the actual weight to be purchased due to the rolling
margin.
 Add a reasonable percentage for offcuts and excess lapping as well
1. Building up rates for reinforcement

2- Mesh (Fabric reinforcement)

 Prefabricated steel reinforcement for concrete, consisting of a mesh of

parallel steel wires welded at points of contact and manufactured in flat
sheets or rolls

 Various weights patterns and sizes of mesh are available. The standard
sheet is 6m x 2.4m; and roll is 60m x 2.4m.

Estimating cost of Re-bars and Mesh

Factors to be considered:
Rolling margin
Cutting waste
Tying wire, chairs and spacers
Unloading
Cutting, bending, and fixing cost

Build up the rate for 20mm deformed rebar in ground slab per tonne. The required
data are as below:
• Reinforcing bars are delivered cut to size and bent at
$1,500/𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡 (cutting and bending is done by supplier)
• Assume wastage as 1%.
• Labour rate is $50/hr

ASMM: “prices are to include for: All necessary boarding,

supports, erecting, framing, cutting, perforations for pipes,
anglers, removal, cleaning, wetting, separating agent”.
2. Building up rates for formwork

Factors that may affect the cost of formwork

 Amount of re-use, from 1 (e.g. stairs) up to perhaps 10 (e.g. walls).

 Degree of standardization i.e. repetition
 Complexity
 Strength requirements i.e. loads
 Ancillaries e.g. bracing, surface treatments etc.

Class activity 2: Stud

A. Build up the rate for class 3 formwork to columns. The required
data are as below: Plywood
• Assume 450*450mm column, 3m high
• 19 mm plywood form at $30/m2
• 100*50mm studs (8 studs per column) at $4.5/m
• Clamps: 500mm centres at $1.5/week
• Clamps erecting, standing and dismantling: 1 week
• Nails at $2.25/kg (including delivery and unloading) – Nails: 0.2 kg/m2
• Formwork uses: 8 times
• Mould oil at $3.75/litre (including delivery)– Mould oil: 0.1 litre/ m2 Clamp
• Unload timber: productivity = 1 hr/m3
• Formwork gang : 2 carpenters and 1 labourer
• Carpenter=$60/hr, labourer = $50/hr
• Productivity of gang = 1.4 m2/gang-hrs
• Allow 5% for waste
2. Building up rates for formwork

Class activity 3:

B. Using the unit rate calculated in Activity 2, determine the

formwork cost. There are 8 no. of 450*450 mm columns with
the height of 3m. Stud
