Issue 378 June 2023

Excellent Support for the Coronation Event

D espite the weather’s best efforts to put us off, over 100 people attended, at any
one time, enjoying the live music acts that played throughout the day. Besides
the music there was lots of entertainment for both adults and children and, refresh-
ment wise, a barbecue and bar supplied by the Dabbling Duck, a cake stall supplied
by the Cartshed Tearoom, a hog roast, a fish and chip van by Tropics Two and an ice
cream van supplied by Paul Adcock.
Thanks go to Triston from Twisted Melon for organising all of the music along with
Chris Coady on sound and Ricky, from RTG, who assembled the stage.
The entertainment for children and adults, included bouncy rides, Nerf darts and
penalty shootout, which was great fun in the rain!
Hay bales donated by Lex Brun made a great picnic circle along
with the fuel for the beacon which was later lit, at around 8pm.
East Anglian Air Ambulance also attended and, with the raffle
that Massingham Stores had provided, helped to raise over £300;
Chrissy Warnes, Dolly Harrison and Janice Bolt were instrumen-
tal in getting everyone to generously support it. Thank you all.
The event was funded and organised by the Great Massingham
Parish Council with support from all the local businesses and the
Village Hall trustees who provided space for parking.
Most importantly, thank you to all the community for helping and
supporting on the day. We would all have wished for better
weather but a good day was enjoyed by all.
Then...eventually... the rain stopped as the main headline act,
‘Flashback Photograph’, got the crowd dancing. Half way through
their set the beacon was lit and a splendid rendition (ahem) of the
national anthem sung by Mark Eldridge to celebrate the King’s
Coronation. (see above, left. More pictures P. 9) Report by Mark Eldridge.
Thank you to Mark and all others involved with the organisation of the event.

GREAT MASSINGHAM INDOOR CARPET BOWLS
The 19th April saw the last few matches of the Indoor Bowls Season.
The Doubles winners were Mark Whitmore and Brian Francis with 35 points; in second
place, just 2 points behind, was Dave Jeffrey and Dylan Fryett. In third place was Colin
Whitmore and Harvey Howlett with 31 points.
The Singles competition was a very close affair with many matches having to have a
deciding leg after both players ended up in a draw after 15 ends. The final was ‘one of
those’ with Colin Whitmore coming out the eventual winner over Stuart Figura with
Dylan and Jason Fryett joint 3rd.
Many thanks to everyone who brought along food on the last night and to Debbie for
keeping all our Wednesday evenings available. Thanks also to Steve Baker who did not
want to commit to playing this year but filled in on several occasions. He eventually
played the rest of the season from Christmas onwards with Pat Jeffrey after her original
partner dropped out.

Some History About the Mallard Magazine

The Mallard
Here are some facts about the Mallard magazine including when it was first published
and how it has developed over the years. Below left is a copy of the front page of the
very first issue, published in October 1991.
Note the different, original title
of Massinghams’ Monthly
which, after three years, was
changed to The Mallard.
At the beginning it was an A4
publication of one or two sheets
and delivered each month with
the free paper. Computers were
not very advanced and not so
readily available in 1991 and,
for the first few years, it was
produced using an Amstrad
Word Processor, cutting and
pasting and photocopying.
It was changed to an A5, eight
page booklet, in June 1998. The
size was increased to twelve
pages in 2006 and to the current
sixteen pages in 2008.
In 2011 colour was added to
four pages and The Mallard
was published on-line in full
colour.
It has never missed an issue.
A village website was then set
up by the Mallard team in
2004 and upgraded again in
2018 to its current format.
In time, as computer technology progressed, more improvements
were made to layout.
The first photographs were added in 2004 and there
were two colour supplements in 2007.

Biodiversity Project News
The May working party morning concentrated
on planting aquatics along the pond bank beside
the wood. A mix of species was used including
bogbean, water mint, water figwort and great
spearwort, some of which have spread success-
fully at Scotsman’s Pit. In addition, two field
maples were added to the hedge behind the
meadow and some musk mallow planted nearby
for which thanks are due to Andrew Bickerton.
Although mid-May, woolly hats seemed to be
the order of the day!
Scotsman’s Pit continued to deliver the unex-
pected, (no, not the hand grenade this time!)
when Robin Arbenz found a handsome drake
Mandarin duck. It may have been a local escapee or
from the wild population which has become estab-
lished here, mainly in the Brecks in Norfolk. Man-
darins were introduced to Britain but there are now
thought to be more in the wild here than in their
native Asia. Most of the British population is found
in the south-east where they prefer tree lined waters
as, perhaps surprisingly, they usually nest in tree
holes. This bird certainly favoured the north end of
the pond with its overhanging branches.
In June we have working parties on the morning of Saturday 17 th June at 10 a.m. but also
on the afternoon of Wednesday 14th at 2p.m. The mid-week date is an experiment, so if
you’d like to help but Saturdays are not convenient do come along if you can.

Mallard News

The World health Organisation tells us that the Covid Pandemic is over! That’s great
news but the consequences of that dreadful period of ill heath and lock down has left its
scars in many areas of our lives. Things aren’t as they were.
For Community cars, we faced loosing many volunteer drivers who for their own reasons
decided not to return to driving and who can blame people for such decisions. So we
don’t have as many drivers now but, as with during the lockdown, we still aimed to en-
sure that passengers with medical appointments got taken to them. A big thank you to all
who masked up and did their bit.
We are now back to offering the range of trips we used to, including those all important
medical trips. This gave our committee an idea! Although there is a small charge for
such things as shopping etc. health appointments can be difficult to fund by passengers
who are in receipt of certain benefits. We set aside money last year and created our Med-
ical Support Fund aimed at helping qualifying passengers to go for appointments, not
worrying about the cost. We are now almost a year round and the scheme has been very
successful. Of course, we continue to keep a weather eye on the funds and we are confi-
dent that we will run it for another year, and then, once again, take stock.
Back to driver shortage! If you are interested in volunteering for the scheme, please
get in touch with me - Neil Steed 07854 114 635 or [email protected]

Message for Parishioners from Rev’d Sue Martin
Welcome to June! Let’s hope that when you receive the magazine
the weather will be warm and sunny.
On June 21st, we have the Summer Equinox, the longest day in the year.
From our house at the end of our village, we have a wonderful view of the
sun setting in the west. I have measured its position through the year. It is amazing how
much it changes, not just the time of sunset but the place where it sets in the western sky.
There is nowhere better to watch the sun go down in the summer than on one of our
beaches on the West Norfolk coast. A glorious sight as the rays reach out across the sea.
But June is also a month of extreme activity for our children and young people in educa-
tion. It’s exam time! From GCSE’s and A levels to college and university exams. A
stressful time, the exams are really important and, as part of that, they bring a lot of pres-
sure on our students. In our primary schools too, children have been completing the
SAT’s papers which, it seems, were especially hard this year.
After the exams, hopefully there is time for other activities such as Sports Days and,
maybe, some outings to different places.
As Christians we believe that we should live life in all its fullness. The passage from
John: Chapter 10 verse 10 says that ‘Jesus came so that we may live life in all its full-
ness’. It is important to have time for more than just work. Time for sharing things to-
gether, for friendship, for caring and loving each other and time for all in our communi-
ties. Time for each other and time to love the world and creation around us, that really is
what life is for. Our churches and their grounds across the ten parishes of our benefice,
also always offer a peaceful place to go and reflect and take time.
With very best wishes to all our young people in education and training. We say to them,
once the hard work is completed, then enjoy what life has to offer in love and friendship.
