1. Introduction to Smart Homes
We live in an age when smart homes are slowly becoming more popular as there's a large
contingent of people that have a smart home or are planning to have one. A smart home is a
normal house which has a smart home system that connects with your smart devices to
program automations, additionally, it's usually voice-controlled.
Moreover, smart homes offer a range of benefits, including increased energy efficiency,
improved security, and greater convenience. As technology continues to advance, smart
homes will become even more advanced, they will offer greater levels of automation and
customization to suit the needs of individual users.
2. Platforms
In the realm of smart homes, theres a large variety of platforms you can use to program and
control your smart home devices. The main 4 platforms are Alexa, Google Assistant,
HomeKit and HomeAssistant. Although these 4 different platforms, at the end they are
actually very similar.
For my smart home project, I will be using Apple HomeKit, the main advantage that
HomeKit has is the security and privacy. As apple is well-known for its impeccable privacy
and security, HomeKit uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that all communication between
your devices is secure and private. In adittion, HomeKit devices must meet strict security
requirements in order to be certified, which provides you extra security.
Furthermore, another reason why I have chosen Homekit its because it supports a large
amount of diverse devices such as lights, lights, thermostats, cameras, sensors and locks. And
the last advantage that got me into using HomeKit is that it is integrated with Apple's of
products and services. In my case, i have an iPhone, iPad and Mac , so I can easily control the
devices using Siri or the Home app.
3. Protocols
There are several different communication protocols that can be used to create a smart home.
These protocols determine how smart home devices communicate with each other and with
the central hub or controller that manages them. In my smart home, I will be using these 3
different protocols to connect my devices:
1. Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is a widely used communication protocol that allows smart home
devices to connect to the internet and communicate with each other. Wi-Fi is
commonly used for smart home devices that require a high level of bandwidth, such
as cameras and doorbells. The main problem of wi-fi, is that if you connect too many
devices, the network can collapse.
2. Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology that is commonly used for
smart home devices that are located close to each other, such as smart locks and
sensors. Bluetooth devices often require a hub or bridge to connect to the internet.
3. Zigbee: Zigbee is a low-power wireless communication protocol that is commonly
used for smart home devices that require low bandwidth, such as sensors and smart
bulbs. Zigbee devices often require a hub or bridge to connect to the internet.
I have chosen this 3 protocols mainly because most of the devices works perfectly with these
3 different protocols, these protocols are flawless and are the best option for a smart home.
Most of the devices I have chosen works with Zigbee, which is the best protocol because it
works in a close network, so it doesnt need to connect the cloud and it works faster.

5. Automations
For my smart home, I made different groups of automations, these are the main automations
that I will have in my smart home:
1. Good Morning Scene: When you say "Good morning, Siri," the following actions will
occur:
● Lights turn on in the room you are
● Smart thermostat adjusts to a comfortable temperature
● Smart speaker plays the spotify playlist “chill”
2. Arriving Home Scene: When your iPhone detects that you've arrived home, the
following actions will occur:
● Smart lock unlocks the front door
● Entry and livingroom lights turn on
● Smart thermostat adjusts to a comfortable temperature
3. Leaving Home Scene: When your iPhone detects that you've left home, the following
actions will occur:
● All lights in the house turn off
● Smart thermostat adjusts to an energy-saving temperature
● Smart lock locks the front door
● All the security cameras starts recording
4. Good Night Scene: When you say "Good night, Siri," or if presence detectors detect
that all of the people are in bed sleeping, the following actions will occur:
● All lights in the house turn off
● Smart thermostat adjusts to a comfortable sleeping temperature
● Smart lock locks the front door
● All the security cameras starts recording
5. Netflix Time Scene: When you say “Netflix chill time, Siri” the following actions will
occur:
● Apple Smart TV will turn ON and put Netflix
● Living room lights will turn off
6. Entering or leaving a room Scene: When a presence sensor detects that you have
entered a room it will turn the smart lights on and when you leave it will turn off.
The second group of automations will be the automations for the Aqara Cube:
1. Shake the cube: It will turn the Netflix time scene on.
2. Position #1: Smart speaker will put the playlist “Motivation”
3. Position #2: The smart thermostat will put the temperature down.
4. Position #3: Smart garage door will open.
5. Position #4: Nanoleaf triangles in bedroom 1 will turn on a constant changing colour
mode.
6. Position #5: Nanoleaf triangles in bedroom 2 will turn on a constant changing colour
mode.
7. Position #6: Nanoleaf triangles in master suite will turn on a constant changing colour
mode.
