8 Bridge Designs

The document discusses factors that affect the design of fixed partial dentures to replace missing teeth, including span length and configuration, abutment condition and alignment, occlusion, and perio health. It also covers different types of fixed partial dentures based on these factors, such as tooth-supported bridges, resin-bonded bridges, and implant-supported bridges. The goal is to select a design that provides adequate support and retention based on the clinical situation.

considerations

1. Fixed bridge may be simple, complex or compound

2.The maximum number of posterior teeth
that can be replaced with FPD is 3, this should be done
only under ideal condition.

3.The loss of 4 adjacent teeth (other than 4 incisors)

is best restored with RPD or an implant.
1
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

4.If more than 1 edentulous space exists in the same

arch, even each could be individually restored with
FPD, it may be best to use RPD, specially when the
space are bilateral & each involves 2 or more teeth.

5. If the 3rd molar is to be used as a potential

abutment, it should be upright, with little or no mesial
inclination, have long, separate roots & be
completely erupted.

2
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

6. The ratios for root surface areas are act

as a guideline, an abutment-pontic root
ratio of 1 or greater is considered to be
favorable.

Ante’s law: the

root surface area
of the abutment teeth should
be equal or more than that of
the teeth being restored by
the pontics. 3
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

The combined root surface area of the

2nd premolar & the 2nd molar is greater
than that of the 1st molar being replaced.
4
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

The combined root surface area of the

1st premolar & the 2nd molar is
approximately equal to that of teeth
being replaced.
5
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

The combined root surface area of the

Canine & the 2nd molar is exceeded by
that of the teeth being replaced.

6
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

7. If fixed-support bridge is indicated, the support

must be done in the anterior restored abutment.

8.If the 1ry abutment is weak for any reason →

added 2ry abutment is used.

7
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

9.Cantilever is used to restore missing upper

central or lateral but is contraindicated to
restore lower incisors.

10. In case of missing maxillary first premolar,

cantilever can be used if the span is short, or
if the canine is vital and 5,6 endodontically restored.

11.The 1st choice to restore missing upper & lower

premolars teeth, is fixed-fixed bridge, while the
supported bridges is the 2nd choice in upper area.
11
Cantilever F.P.D.

Cantilever F.P.D. replacing a Cantilever pontic can be used

maxillary lateral incisor, using to replace a 1st premolar, if
the canine as the abutment. Full veneer retainers are used
on the 2nd premolar & 1st
molar abutments.
15
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

12.Cantilever bridge can be used to restore missing any

last molar taking into consideration that the
pontic here is used as an occlusal stopper to prevent
over eruption of the opposing.(2 abutment, premolarization)

ents, the pontic is the Size of pre-
molar rather than molar. 13
13.Spring cantilever limited to restore missing upper
central or lateral incisors.

18
Fixed partial denture designs (configurations).

14.Restoring of maxillary canine is differ than

the restoration of mandibular canine.

15. Missing more than 1 tooth, the choice is

fixed-fixed type of bridge & means of retention
can be added.
