Field Experience For Passive Power Filter For Grid-Connected

This document describes a study on using passive power filters (PPFs) to address harmonic problems caused by a 102 kW solar rooftop installation at an industrial plant in Thailand. The PPFs were designed to eliminate harmonics, reduce voltage and current distortion, avoid resonance problems, and improve power factor. Test results showed that after installing two 250 kVAR 5th harmonic PPFs, the power factor was improved and approached unity, and harmonic distortion in both voltage and current was significantly reduced, solving the harmonic problems created by the solar rooftop system.

I. INTRODUCTION
Industrial power systems have harmonic currents,
which occur from non-linear loads such as AC drive
switching power mode supplies (SMPS). Nowadays,
alternative energy is used in current electricity generation
systems. It is applied to the original system as shown in Fig.
1. Solar energy is an alternating current that can generate all
harmonic currents. Additionally, the amount of electricity

V. CONCLUSION
The electrical system with solar rooftop and the
harmonic result of solar rooftop can be solved the harmonic
problems by using a PPF methods. The level of harmonic
distortion is limited in accordance with IEEE 519-1992
standard. The %THD of voltage and current are reduced to
2.4% and 9.7%, respectively. The power factor improved
close to unity. The power factor measurement represents the
ability to supply power to loads and it is a significant factor
indicates system losses. All three parameters are indicator of
the good quality of the electrical system and the confidence
of the system. Therefore, we are confident that this system
can operate with the highest efficiency. Moreover, the
extraordinary qualifications of PPFs are low cost, low
maintenance, high reliability and the PPFs installation can be
combined easily with the existing system without problems.
