Zoo Inspection Report

The inspection report from Blank Park Zoo notes that on August 30, 2022, an 8-year-old Japanese snow monkey was euthanized due to complications from a large gangrenous wound on its back. The wound resulted from a procedure on August 17 where the monkey was under anesthesia on its back for about 3 hours with an electric heating pad under it. Proper monitoring of the heating pad was not done, resulting in a severe burn. The zoo's attending veterinarian and staff concluded monitoring procedures for patients under anesthesia need to be followed. All veterinary staff were retrained on use and monitoring of heating pads.

2.40(b)(2) Critical
Attending veterinarian and adequate veterinary care (dealers and exhibitors).
On August 30, 2022 an 8 year old Japanese snow monkey was euthanized due to a poor prognosis from a large

gangrenous wound on it’s back. The wound resulted from an extended procedure it had undergone on August 17. During

this procedure, the monkey was under anesthesia on its back for approximately 3 hours. It had an electric heating pad

under it’s back during that procedure. The amount of heat is usually monitored by veterinary staff during a procedure, but

in the investigation into this case, the zoo attending veterinarian and leadership staff concluded that proper monitoring

was not done, resulting in the severe burn to the monkey’s back.

Each exhibitor shall establish and maintain programs of adequate veterinary care that include appropriate methods to

prevent and treat diseases. Established procedures for monitoring patients under anesthesia need to be followed at all

times. All veterinary staff were retrained on use and monitoring of the heating pad.

This inspection and exit interview were conducted with a facility representative.
