1. The document is an exam for a Real Analysis course assessing students' knowledge of series of functions and calculus of several variables. It contains 12 true/false questions covering topics like continuity, differentiability, and uniform convergence. 2. One question asks to find the equation of the tangent plane to a surface z=f(x,y) given the directional derivatives at a point. 3. Another asks to find the derivative of the composition of two functions f,g at a point, if it exists. 4. Another asks to use Lagrange multipliers to find the maximum value of a function subject to a constraint. 5. The final

Course Code: MA4101 Real Analysis: Series of Functions and Calculus of Several Variables
Maximum Marks: 50 Time Limit: 2 Hours

Instructions: Answer all questions with proper justifications. All part of a question should be
answered in one place. Separate page(s) should be used for rough works if required.

1. State TRUE or FALSE for each of the following questions and justify your answer.
(a) (3 points) The following function is continuous at (0, 0).
( 3
x y
(x 2 +y 2 )2 , if (x, y) 6= (0, 0)
f (x, y) =
0, otherwise.

(b) (3 points) Let f : R2 → R be a function such that the directional derivative Du f (0, 0)
exists along every direction u. Then f is differentiable at (0, 0).
(c) (3 points) Let F : R2 → R2 be defined by

F (x, y) = (yex , xey ) .

Then DF (0, 0) is not invertible.

(d) (3 points) Let f : R3 → R2 be such that f (0, 0, 0) = (1, 2) and

1 2 3
Df (0, 0, 0) = .
0 0 1

If g : R2 → R2 is defined by g(x, y) = (x + 2y + 1, 3xy), then

1 2 5
D(g ◦ f )(0, 0, 0) = .
6 12 21

(e) (3 points) Let F : R2 → R2 be defined by

F (x, y) = x2 − y 2 , 2xy .

Then F is one-one on {(x, y) ∈ R2 | x > 0}.

(f) (3 points) Let f : R2 → R be defined by f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 − 5. There is a neighborhood
B ⊂ R of x = 1 and a unique function g : B → R so that

g(1) = 2 and f (x, g(x)) = 0 for all x ∈ B.

(g) (3 points) The function f : R2 → R defined by f (x, y) = x2 − y 2 has a saddle at the

point (0, 0).
(h) (3 points) Let D = [0, 1] × [0, 1] and f, g : D → R be two functions. If f + g is Riemann
integrable on D, then both f and g are also Riemann integrable on D.
(i) (3 points) The sequence of functions fn = xn is uniformly convergent on [0, 1].
(j) (3 points) Any finite collection of continuous functions defined on a compact set K is
equicontinuous on K.

2. (5 points) Let f : R2 → R be differentiable on (x, y) ∈ R2 x2 + y 2 ≤ 1 and f (0, 0) = 10.
If the directional derivatives at (0, 0) along u = (3/5, 4/5) and v = √1 , √1 are
2 2

Du f (0, 0) = 12 and Dv f (0, 0) = −4 2,

then find the equation of the tangent plane at (0, 0) to the surface z = f (x, y).

3. (5 points) Let f : R2 → R3 and g : R2 → R2 be defined by

f (x, y) = 3x − y 2 , 2x + y, xy + y 3 , g(u, v) = 2ve2u , uev .

Find D (f ◦ g −1 ) (2, 0), if exists.

4. (5 points) Use Lagrange multiplier method to determine the maximum value of the function
f : R2 → R defined by
f (x, y) = 4xy
subject to the constraint x2 + y 2 = 1.

5. (5 points) Let fn : [a, b] → R, n ∈ N be a sequence of continuous functions. If fn converges

uniformly to a function f : [a, b] → R, then prove that f is also continuous on [a, b].
