3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:
3.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration Process.
WARNING
Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,
ensure that all test equipment voltage and/or current outputs are set to zero (0) or
turned off, where applicable. Ensure that all equipment switches are set to the
proper position before making connections or applying power. If not strictly
observed, could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health
hazards.
WARNING
Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,
ensure that Temperature Bath is adjusted for ambient temperature, where
applicable. Use care when installing, or removing instruments from
Temperature Bath when higher temperatures exist. If not strictly observed,
could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

3.2 The Minimum Use Specifications for the test equipment listed in the Equipment Requirements, are broad in
order to cover the requirements for any item listed in this calibration procedure. Select substitute equipment based
on the item being calibrated, not the Minimum Use Specifications listed in the Equipment Requirements. Refer to
T.O. 00-20-14 for guidance concerning substitution of test equipment.
3.3 Perform only those portions of the Calibration Process, which pertain to the TI being calibrated.
3.4 If required, connect Temperature Indicator to the Platinum Resistance Thermometer as shown in Figure 1.
NOTE
If substituting the Platinum Resistance Thermometer, refer to the com data for
the correct wiring connections.

3.5 Prepare and maintain an Ice Bath IAW T.O. 33K-1-104. Verify T.O. 33K-1-104 still meets the requirement.
3.6 If necessary for step 3.7, prepare and maintain the Triple Point of Water cell IAW T.O. 33C3-3-1. Verify
T.O. 33C3-3-1 still meets the requirement.
3.7 Place the Platinum Resistance Thermometer in an Ice Bath or Triple Point of Water Maintenance System before
and after each TI calibration. The resistance at 0 C (0.01 C TPW) should be measured and recorded. If using an
Ice Bath, divide this value by 0.99996012 to obtain the Triple Point of Water resistance. If this is the first use of the
SPRT or PRT since its most recent calibration, compare to the charted value on Report of Measurement. If it differs
>0.003 for 25 probe or >0.012 for 100 probe from the charted value on Report of Measurement, contact
AFPSL. If it differs <0.003 for 25 probe or <0.012 for 100 probe, record the measured value and the date
it was measured on the Report of Measurement. If a value is already recorded on the Report of Measurement,
compare the current value to that value. If it differs >0.003 for 25 probe or >0.012 for 100 probe, contact
AFPSL. Use the latest R0.01 measurement to calculate resistance ratios. The difference between the before and
after measured resistance at 0.01C must be within 0.001 for 25 probe, 0.004 for 100 probe or the
resolution of the indication device, whichever is greater. If not, repeat the PRT Drift Check and calibration until this
condition is met. If several TIs are to be calibrated at one time, it is permissible to take one set of reference
measurements (before and after).
3.8 Connect test equipment to an appropriate power source. Set all POWER switches to ON and allow warm-up as
required by manufacturer.

4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:
NOTE
Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.
4.1 TEMPERATURE CALIBRATION:
4.1.1 Assemble the ring stand apparatus on top of the appropriate Temperature Bath as shown in Figure 2.

NOTE
As applicable, sheath the TI probe in a waterproof casing such as a snug tube,
balloon or rubber/latex glove sealed with rubber bands.
4.1.2 Insert TI and Platinum Resistance Thermometer (appropriate range for temperature being calibrated) into the
Temperature Bath or Dry Well Calibrator test well, using extreme caution with the Platinum Resistance
Thermometer. Ensure the Platinum Resistance Thermometer is submersed as deeply as possible into the
Temperature Bath. Submerse the TI to a depth as close as possible to the depth at which it will be used.
4.1.3 Connect TI to Digital Multimeter set up to measure resistance, refer to manufactures data as required.
4.1.4 Select TI test points as per Table 1 directive or if the TI test points are not listed, use 3 to 5 test points that
cover the range of the TI.
4.1.5 Adjust the Temperature Bath control to obtain the first temperature value selected in step 4.1.4.
4.1.6 Using the FINE control on the Temperature Bath, make adjustment until the Temperature Indicator indicates
the temperature selected in step 4.1.4.
5
T.O. 33K5-4-592-1
4.1.7 Measure and record TI resistance value. The TI resistance value will be charted at the selected temperatures.
4.1.8 Repeat steps 4.1.5 through 4.1.7 using each temperature value selected in step 4.1.4.
4.1.9 Return completed chart with certified TI to customer if this is the first TI calibration or if previous chart is
unavailable for comparison.
4.1.10 Calculate the corresponding limits by multiplying the resistance of TI PRT at the TPW value times the Alpha
curve value times the PRT accuracy as listed per Table 1 directive in C. Compare the TI chart from the previous
calibration with the current charted values. The values must be within the accuracies listed per Table 1 directive.
NOTE
Limits in units of Ohms are calculated by multiplying the resistance of TI probe
at TPW times Alpha curve value times the probe accuracy in C.
Example:
TI probe resistance at TPW = 100 Ω
TI Alpha curve value = 0.00392 Ω
TI Accuracy = 0.1 °C @ 0 C
0.3 °C @ -40 and 100 C
0.5 °C @ 200 C
0.7 °C @ 300 C
0.9 °C @ 400 C
TI accuracy at 300 C = (100 Ω * 0.00392 Ω * 0.7 C)
TI accuracy at 300 C = 2744 Ω
NOTE
Failure to repeat last calibration is not necessarily reason for rejection. Last
calibration may have been in error. Rerun again. Check for obvious physical
defects. These PRTs have not been artificially aged or burnt in and may be
unstable. If second set of results matches first set within the tolerances provided
in step 4.1.10, TI should be certified and returned to customer with new chart.
4.1.11 Adjust the Temperature Bath for ambient temperature, set all POWER switches to STBY/OFF, disconnect and
secure all equipment.
