Time Management: Predicament of Senior High School Students Who Are Also Part-Time Students

The document discusses the predicament of senior high school part-time students in managing their time. It finds that part-time students work to meet financial needs as well as gain vocational experience and motivation. However, factors like poor time management, tardiness, lack of focus, sleep deprivation, and heavy workloads negatively impact students' academic performance. While time management can positively or negatively affect performance depending on the situation, there is a direct relationship between the two. Setting schedules, prioritizing tasks, and internal motivation are essential for combating poor time management. The study recommends being considerate of students' needs, providing time management education, and balancing work and rest to support part-time students.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

Part-time job refers to an occupation where an employed worker works

lesser than what is required in full time (ILO Part-Time Work Convention, 1994).

Furthermore, students are working part-time on behalf of their studies. Thus, part-

time job is a flexible work which is ideal for students who are both studying and

working.

Although part-time job is flexible, it can cause detrimental effects to

academic performances especially without proper time management. Time

management is an essential piece for part-time students. According to Claessens et.

al (2007), time managements refer to the attitude of an individual towards

managing time to achieve his/her goals. Therefore, part-time students are struggling

in achieving goal especially those with poor time management.

According to the study from Georgetown University Center in Washington

D.C and National Center on Education (2019), forty-five percent of college students

are part-time workers. Moreover, they work thirty hours a week after going to

school. Thus, most college students chose part-time work for flexibility to work and

study.
6
According to Statista (2018), a statistic showed that nine percent of surveyed

students in South Korea are part-time workers. However, a huge decline of part-

time workers was presented in a survey during 2020. The statistic showed that

there are 4.6 percent of surveyed students are part-time workers. Therefore, part-

time students in South Korea are decreasing for two years.

According to the data from Commission of Higher Education (2010) in the

Philippines, around 216,000 of students are recently struggling in work-life balance.

This is about eight percent of the overall higher education students in the country.

Hence, handling part-time job and doing academic studies at a limited span of time

is difficult.

When a student is motivated, they are committed to do better in managing

time. Additionally, supports from relatives and acquaintance also inspire the

student to work and study. Following theories could also provide students the

knowledge to further improve time management skills. In conclusion, motivation

can develop time management that can improve the academic performance of part-

time students.

The researchers wanted to determine the effects of proper time management

on the academic performance of a student. The researchers wanted to know the

students' coping mechanisms for managing their time between work and school.

7
Because of this, researchers sought to know the factors that can affect the time

management of part-time students.

Theoretical Background

Related Theories

Theory of Human Motivation

Theory of Human Motivation is a theory that classifies the motivation of a

human into five hierarchical classes: physiological needs, safety needs, social needs,

self-esteem and self-actualization. Furthermore, all humans should have motivation

and the ability to motivate someone (Maslow, 1987). According to Sarla (2020),

motivation is the process whereby goal‐directed activities are initiated, instigated

and sustained.

Pareto Principle

Pareto principle or also known as 80/20 principle was founded by Vilfredo

Pareto. According to Kirillov et. al (2015), eighty percent of the activities can be

solved by twenty percent of your time while the remaining activities can be solved

by eighty percent of your time. For this reason, this is based upon the circumstances

that all events in the world are affected by this rule. Furthermore, the time

management is not an exception of this rule.

8
The eighty percent of your activities comes from work. However, the work is

done by only twenty percent of your time (Dr. Satija,2019). Working part-time does

not exceed to eight hours a day or thirty-five hours a week. In contrast, there are

numerous activities when it comes to work that is only given at a short duration.

Jar Pickle Theory

Jar pickle theory is based on visual representation of a pickle jar or jar. The

jar full of water was slowly filled with rocks, pebbles and sands. According to Wright

(2002), this concept was based on his daily life schedule.

First, you should put rocks in the jar. Put as many rocks as you can until it’s

full. Then, put many pebbles as many as you can. Next, put sands on the jar until it’s

full. Lastly, add some water (Said,2014).

According to Jinalee and Singh (2018), the jar represents the time and the

things you put in it represents your activities. The things you put are based on

importance. The rocks are the most important things you do. The pebbles are your

everyday routines. For an instance, washing laundries, washing plates, cooking.

Then, the sands are the distractions in your life. Finally, the water are your personal

tasks or spending time on your family.

Driving Forces for Part-Time Work

There are various reasons why senior high school students work part-time.

Pregoner et al. (2020) stated that fiscal assistance, self-development, and self-

motivation are the students' incentives to work part-time. Altogether, the most

common reasons for senior high school students to work part-time are financial and

career reasons. Additionally, Yusanti (2021) concluded on their findings that part-

time students are motivated to work because of experiences or money. Hence, skills,

experience, and monetary funds are the factors that drive students to work part-

time.

Learning about career topics in school can be really helpful in reaching

career success. However, theories and hypotheses are not adequate to support your

profession. According to Ramli (2021), being flexible in studying also affects their

processes for educating themselves. For instance, learning theoretical discourse in

schools about cookery during the day while applying the discussions at work at

night Part-time jobs are important to students because of the necessary skills that

can support their desired job (Evans, 2021). Moreover, students can confirm the

proposed theories of facilitators relating to their field of study. Therefore, working

can support them in studying for their vocation.

11
Additionally, Do Min Hoang stated that students ought to work part-time to

proliferate vital skills and apply what have they learned in school. Furthermore, the

workplace is a decent alternative for learning and discovering a student’s suitable

career on one's own. Students are required to practice theoretical knowledge in

schools for their part-time job (Hoang Thi Nga,2020). With this in mind, theories,

discourse, and hypotheses are lengthy in nature. Thus, students are needed to turn

the learnings in schools into students’ own with the help of part-time jobs.

Students chose to work part-time to provide financial sustainability for

themselves and family (Ramli, 2021). In addition, their family cannot provide them

with financial aid on helping them to accomplish their desired careers. As a result,

students work hard to maintain or prepare their tuition in schools. Polinar revealed

in their study that students are having difficulties in getting a part-job to support

their finances. Additionally, students work to provide daily basic needs such as food,

transportation and energy expenditures (Arif,2022). Furthermore, having part-time

job can possibly maintain or possibly improved the student’s standard of living.

Financial factors and experience factors are the major reasons why students

work part time. Students are deprived of the financial support they need, thus

resorting to part-time jobs. The income from part-time jobs is spent on daily needs.

Furthermore, the experiences, skills, and knowledge they get from part-time jobs

improve them and prepare them for their desired careers.

12
Effects of Time Management on Academic Performances

Going to school and working part-time are two separate responsibilities that

must be completed at different times. Moreover, there is a relationship between

time management and academic performance. According to Mariano (2022), both

academic performance and time management revealed a very high and positive

relationship. Additionally, he suggested practicing better time management skills

among students which are also part-time job workers. Provided that obtaining time

management skills can possibly enhance their academic performance. Thus, it is

highly recommended to cultivate better time management that will lead to a better

academic performance.

Although time management and academic performance are correlatedly

positive, stress and workload are related in a negative manner (Salahuddin et. al,

2019). In comparison, stress and workload are both factors that can affect time

management and academic performance. Therefore, a time management can

hypothetically negatively affect the student’s academic performances.

Working part-time and going to school are both different tasks done at

different time. Rong (2022) stated that part-time students are having difficulties in

doing assessment and resorts to skipping classes. Balancing both activities can be

challenging for students. For this reason, students have no available time to allocate

for studying. If part-time students overwork then it is high likely that they will fail in

13
academic performances (Saddique,2023). Hence, a student should have a good

schedule plan to further manage time for studying.

Garado (2019) restated that part-time students find the written exams and

performance tasks challenging. Moreover, they even tend to skip some discussions.

Provided that are struggling on performing school activities. Additionally, tardiness

can be habitual due to tedious work. Hence, stress, workload and pressure affect the

student’s perspective towards time management and academic performance.

Managing your time can be a difficult task. However, students can further

improve their time management skills through part-time job (Peteros, 2021). Thus,

they are capable of getting better academic performances. According to Karsdorp

(2022), students only require less effort on studying if they had better time

management. Furthermore, students with better time management can allocate an

extra time for studying. Hence, time management has positive effects towards

student’s attitude in their academic performances.

Time management and academic performance show correlations from a

theoretical perspective. In addition, there is a direct relationship between these two

factors. To summarize, better time management leads to better academic

performances. In the contrary, poor time management leads to the worst academic

performance and tardiness in certain school activities.

14
Coping Mechanism for Time Management

A poor time management can lead to a dire consequence to the academic

performances of students. However, Rockman et. al (2022) concluded that an

effective time management is composed of strong motivation and setting organized

priorities. Hence, highly motivated students show better attitude towards time

management.

Motivation greatly affects the commitment of students to pursue education

while working. Moreover, self-disciplined, committed and motivated students can

withstand pressures on both work and school (Tumin et. al, 2020). Additionally,

they can adapt to certain changes on both work and school.

Motivated students show better time management that prevents negligence

on both work and study (Hidayatin,2023). Students are capable to remind

themselves despite of the pressure and workloads from their part-time job and

academic performances. Therefore, working and studying does not hinder the

student’s motivation to pursue their education.

Teacher’s and facilitator’s support towards part-time job students can affect

the student’s perception of time management. Nacario et. al (2020) recommended

that teachers who handles working students should be considerate to them by

15
providing them special requirements in school. Thus, students are able to manage

both part-time jobs and school activities free from negative factors.

Students, teachers, employers are important factors in supporting part-time

job (Vetka and Kuusk,2019). Provided that students are more motivated to learn in

a supportive atmosphere. Workplaces and schools are both learning environments

for part-time job students. Hence, teachers, students and employers can

hypothetically cope the part-time student’s struggles in occupation and education.

Related Studies

According to a study conducted by Fitriana et. al (2021), there is a good

relation between time management and academic performance. Furthermore,

additional workload from part-time does not hinder their academic performance.

Ahmad, Batol & Hussain (2020) concluded in their study that there is a

significant relation between time management. Moreover, it has direct relationship

between them. In conclusion, time management can affect the student’s academic

performance positive or negatively.

According to a study conducted by Amida, Algarni & Stupnisky (2021),

internal motivation was the strongest factor that could improve the student’s

academic performance.
