Water Tank Design and Construction Guide

Water tanks come in three varieties: elevated, ground-level, and underground tanks. Proper geotechnical investigation and consideration of soil properties, groundwater levels, and chemical compositions are required for designing tank foundations. Construction joints also require careful detailing to accommodate movement, especially for structures in waterlogged areas.

We shall follow working stress method in chapters t o follow.
Geotechnicl investigation of the site is sincerely required since the type of the
soil at foundation level not only affect the design of foundation but also affect the
forces on various elements of the tank du e to ear thquake loads. Effects of diffe rential
settement should be properly taken into account. The subsuil water if exists, may
affect the allowable bearing pressure and m ay als o induce forces in the elements of
underground structures. Minimum 10 m deep bore ho les of 150 mm diam e ter sh all

(ii) Cracks due to applied loads. These cacks are wider a surface and can
permit water which may corrode the re1nforceme t nd finally may lead.to
disintegration of concrete. Surface cracks shall be hmted to a predetermined
values as suggested by respective codes of practice . As per IS:456, a
surface crack width of 0.3 mm is p ermitted for normal structures, upto
0.2 mm for elements exposed to moisture or in contact with soil or ground
· water and up to 0.1 mm for aggressive environment such as 'severe' cate gory.
On the other hand IS:3370-2009 stipulates for liquid retaining struct ures
the exposure as 'severe' and permits crack width up to 0.2 mm. This
requirement necessiates limiting tensile stresses in concre te to permissible
value. The_ design method developed considering limiting crack width is _
known as no-crack design or uncrack theory.
17-3. Special requirements: The above special considerations for liquid
reaining structures lead to some special requirements for makin g RCC water tanks as
laid by JS:3370-2009 and are described below:
(1) Min i"':um grade of concrete: Considering the

(7) Where reservoirs are prov_ided with an internal impermeable lining, inview of
the concrete eventually drymg out, allowance for a drying shrinkage of 300 x 10-6
should be made.
(8) Watertightness of the tanks shall be checked in accordance with IS:3370 (part I)
(9) Liquid retaining structures shall be protected from lightening by providing
suitable lightening conductor. Also minimum required ven tilation (usually 0.04%
of surface area) shall be ensured by providing actual ventilation or by fixing
cowl ventilators 100 mm to 150 mm diameters on cover slab. The number of
such cowls shall be based on 0.04% of the surface area of water and shall b e
uniformly distributed on cover slab or cover dome.
17-4. Control joints: Proper control joints like contraction joint, expansion
joint, sliding joint, construction joint, etc. should be provided to reduce the cracking
of the concrete. These are briefly described below.

Temperature strains are m uch smaller at the centre of depth. Therefore for depth more

than any other shape . This makes it economical than any oth er shapes. However, for
tanks of small capac ity, formwork for circular tanks is costly and rec tn gular tanks are
used. Two types of construct i ons are adopted for circular tan ks :is g i r en b .1°w:
(1) The side wall is free to expand or contract as the joint between floor an d side
wa ll is flexible .
(2) The movement of side wal l is restricted by providing fixity or con tinuity with
the ba se.
These are dis cussed in the follow ing articles:

This causes hoop tension per meter -
2
The sec tion of wall should be designed for the hoop tension as explained in
art. 17-7. As the hoop tension decreases from base to top, the reinforcem ent may be
reduced accordingly. Thickness of wall also can be reduced, however, this will be done
for large capacity ta nks (refer to example 17-2).
Hoop steel is main steel (hor izontal) and is circular in shape . Vertical steel is a
distribution steel. To reduce the labour of fixing the reinforcement, horizontal steel
will be placed on outer layers . Horizontal steel should be f)roperly curved in a
hooping machine, and not bent in a series of kinks. It will not be possible to use one_
bar for a complete perimeter of the wall. Ther efore, lapping of bars is necessary.
For an ordinary slab or beam, we lap the bars at the region where stresses are
reduced to 50 per cent. In circular tank walls, however, at all sections of the horizontal
bar, the stress is the same. Therefore, it is preferable to carefully plan
the splicing of

18-3. Analysis of circular tanks: If the wall of circular tank is fixed or
hinged with base, the walls are subjected to horizontal shear in addition to hoop
tension. If a tank is· tall with a small diameter, it will resist the liquid pressure
primarily ·by ring (hoop) tension and to a lesser degree by horizontal shear at base.
If a tank is shallow and the diameter is large, it will resist liquid pressure primarily
by cantilever action from base and to a lesser degree by hoop tension. If the tank is -
medium, it will resist the loads by both hoop tension and by cantilever action.
A circular tank fixed with base (or may be continuous with base) is shown in fig. 18-3.

16.0 + 0.127 + 0.137 + 0.068 = 7.36

Note 1: y = Unit weight of the liquid.

Note 2: Positive sign indicates shear acting inward.

Case 2: Circular tank with hinged base and free top: At the top shear force and
bending moment are zero while at the bottom, deflection and bending moment are
zero. These conditions give the following equations: •.
d3y
at x = H, shear force is zero i.e. EI
dx3
=O
d2 y
at x = H, bending moment is zero 1.e. EI
dx2 =O
2
at x = 0, bending moment is zero i.e. EI d y2 = 0
dx
at x = 0, deflection is 'zero 1.e. Ely = O.
Knowing the four conditions, Pc and Pr can be solved. IS:3370 (part IV) gives the ·
hoop tension and bending moment at different heights and shear ,
at the base in taJ:e_
12, 13 and 11, and hoop tension, moment and shear forces
at various locations r.e. ·
determined similar to equations (18-2). They are partly
given in tables 18-4, 18-5 ad
18-3. For full details, the code shall be referred.

Joint concreting
At" the joint of base slab and side walls, there is a jumble of steel and careful
concreting is required. It is not practicable to cast the base and side walls at a time.
First, the base slab is cast with 50 mm starter for side walls. Next day, the form of.
starter is removed and reinforcements of side walls are fixed. Formwork of the first
lift (max. 1200 mm) is erected and concreting is done. These operations may require
two or three or more days. Every time, before concreting, the joint is cleaned thoroughly
and extra cement is used for the initial concreting.
• Example, 19-2.
Design a rectangular water tank open at top (may be a raw water smp) resting.
on ground having a size of 3. 6 m x 8.0 m x 3.0 m high. The materials are M30 grade
