Problem #1
A square plate (50 cm  50 cm) has a mass of 0.5 kg slides down a smooth vertical plane
surface with a uniform velocity of 0.4 m/s, as shown in the Figure. If a thin layer of oil of
thickness 5 mm fills the space between the plate and the surface, determine the dynamic
viscosity of oil, . Assume the velocity distribution in the oil gap is linear.

= 0.2452kg/m.s

Problem # 2
Curved surface gate AB (R = 1 m) with a depth of 2 m normal to the page in a two layered
oil/water tank as show in the Figure. The oil layer (SG = 0.8) is 1.5 m above the water layer.
The gate is hinged at point B. Determine the force F acting at point A to keep the gate to be
closed.

F=38943.6N

Problem # 3
A horizontal water jet ( = 103 kg/m3) of rectangular cross section strikes a wedge as shown in
the Figure. Part of the flow turns down 30 o and the remaining part continues horizontally.
Neglect the gravitational effects and determine the ratio of the horizontal to the vertical
components of force, FH/FV, needed to hold the wedge stationary if the fluid speed remains
constant, V = 2 m/s.

FH/FV=0.26795

Problem # 4
The height d, of the boundary layer above a flat plate is a function of the downstream distance
x, free-stream velocity Vꝏ, and fluid density , and viscosity m.
δ =( x , V ∞ , ρ, μ )
Use the method of repeating variables to generate a dimensionless relationship for d as a
function of the other variables. Show all your work.

The shown V-Notch is used to measure the volumetric flow rate Q in a channel flow. An
engineer uses a 10 cm height model Notch in the lab to estimate the flow through a 40 cm
height prototype Notch. What is the ratio of the flow model rate Q m to the prototype flow rate
Qp if both model and prototype use water and have the same angle q.

Problem # 6
Water (ρ = 103 kg/m3 and μ = 0.001 kg/m. s) circulates through 25 mm diameter copper pipe
at a rate of 0.75 L/s from an open tank using a 75% efficient pump. The total length of the
copper pipe is 25 m and the surface roughness is 0.61 mm. A sharp inlet, fully opened globe
valve, four 90° elbows, and a sharp exit are all screwed fittings in the system. The layout of
the whole system is shown in the Figure. Determine the power required to drive the pump.

Oil (SG = 0.85) flows downward through a vertical pipe contraction containing a screen with
a loss coefficient (K =1.5) and a fully opened globe valve (screwed), as shown in Figure. If
the mercury (SG = 13.6) manometer reading (h) is 40 cm, determine the volume flow rate in
the pipe. Neglecting the major (friction) losses in the system.

A logging boat is towing a wood log that is 2 m in diameter and 8 m long at 4 m/s through
water. Estimate the power required if the axis of the log is parallel to the tow direction.

P = 87462 Watt
