LIVING AND WORKING IN SPACE

In December 2017, Nanoracks, along with partners at Space Systems

Loral/Maxar, MDA US Systems, and ULA successfully completed a 5 -
month concept study, funded by NASA’s NextSTEP program, proving that
it is technically feasible to re-purpose the spent upper stages of launch
vehicles, in-space.

Since the second stages are already scheduled to fly, we keep costs low,
operate multiple platforms throughout the solar system, and customize
a unique platform specific to scientific research needs to best cultivate
a consumer science-based product.

This is the pathway to realizing our vision of using the best technology
to make space the enabler of better life on Earth.

Nanoracks will be building a self-contained hosted payload platform that will

demonstrate the robotic cutting of second stage tank material on orbit. Never has
structural metal cutting been done in-space.

We are working with Maxar, who will develop a new articulating robotic arm with a
friction milling end-effector for this mission. This friction milling will use such high
rotations per minute that it will melt our metal material that we achieve a cut without
generating a single piece of orbital debris.

Our mission will be on a Q4 2021 SpaceX dedicated rideshare mission.

We will have 30 minutes to one hour to complete the cutting of three metal pieces that
are representative of various vehicle upper stages, including the Centaur 3. Nanoracks
plans to downlink photos and videos of the friction milling and cutting.

Additional studies and tests to be added, focused on biology and artificial gravity.

“Structural metal cutting has never been done in space, and SpaceX is honored to help deliver a
demonstration of this capability to orbit. It’s promising to see more companies like Nanoracks
investing in new technologies to advance the exploration of the Moon and, ultimately, Mars.”

Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX

Tech Hardware in Space
In addition to research platforms we have in-space today, Nanoracks
seeks to take market leadership by having multiple in-space platforms
and satellites that house at least:

• Plant growth and incubation chambers

• Specialized cell preparation hardware (i.e. a leaf/seed grinder)
• Automated robotic technologies
• Automated fluid handling devices for prep work basic assays (ELISA,
real-time-quantitate PCR, DAPI/cell staining) and protein
crystallization equipment
• Incubation/refrigeration capabilities that include standardized
transfer to/from experiment hardware and analytical equipment

In addition to a specialized greenhouse on the ground…..

And one day, perhaps on one Mars as well!

“Space is the best lab, with weak gravity, low temperature and extraordinarily high radiation. It
takes great efforts to create that kind of extreme environment on Earth”

--Guo Rui, director of Yangling Seeds Corporation, China
