Frank miller is an American comic book writer penciller and inker, novelist,

screenwriter, film director, and producer best known for his comic book stories
and graphic novels such as Daredevil: Born Again, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin
City, and 300. (wiki)

In 2015, Miller was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. I realized
when I started Sin City that I found American and English comics be too wordy,
too constipated, and Japanese comics to be too empty.

So, I was attempting to do a hybrid"-Frank

so, let’s get deep inside (that’s what she said) the mind of frank miller and
analyse his work.

The most notable works of his are The Dark Knight, Sin City ,300 and daredevil
That cannot be redone again by any other future artist or writer. This is
because of all the balance he maintained in the comic while writing and as well as
pencilling it. There is certain sense of character as well as the world that feel
so real and immersive that after reading all this comic, we are there in that
zone and world only. And the one to known as for breaking the rule and
questioning things why the character has always to be like this every time,
within time the character can also change like real world, but moreover in his
comics he pushes the limits to its extents and sometimes even more than
needed.

Signs’ that YOU ARE frank miller-

A noir style narrative- Daredevil and the early 1980’s was his debut and became
one of the marvel’s rising star at the age of 21, and the ideation to introduce
the crime concept in this title was because at that time no one was thinking
about it, then batman at the age of 29, sin city and more titles that follow this
genre.
Layout style - one of the biggest weapons that Miller has besides his
storytelling ability, it’s his Sequential art and his way to shine out of all the
artist that has been doing the same layout and same style for years. And even
breaking up from the normal vertical style comic and published 300 in
rectangular square form format that supports the style and narration.

Prostitutes -OHk, why not! he is all creative and talented artist but he has a got
a thing for hookers with a gun. His run-on Daredevil turned milquetoast-bland
love interest Karen Page into a porn actress willing to sell herself (and her
former super-boyfriend) for a hit of heroin. Batman: Year One turned a proto-
Cat woman Selina Kyle into a prostitute from the bad side of town. And Sin City
is positively overflowing with women engaged in the world's oldest profession.
Gail and the Girls of Old Town are their own bosses, which—in Miller's work—
counts as ''liberation.' And love for swords indicating his influence from old
ninja movies and anime.

Beaten up heroes and violence - That’s the culture in Hollywood or old comic
book series where the main character is always beating up the people or
whenever he is in the fight, he has barely any wounds on him. Here miller again
broke the trend and exaggerated it in even more where merciless things has
happened to the main protagonist and he is on the edge of his death and even
sometimes they die. And all these led to more bloodshed violence.
Visuals and colour- in terms of visual I think he has evolved with the journey
where the taste of writing remains the same, if we compare to daredevil, dark
knight to 300 and sin city it’s all different though the blood, big splash pages
and dynamic of the frames remain common and quite unique to him. It’s how he
handled each story with a unique approach like sin city the whole comic is in
monochrome tone but the work in silhouettes is mind-blowing, in Dark knight
how he portrayed Batman in his old age and big blood shed splash pages,
whereas in 300 the vertical style of layout and quit matt paining style of it suits
the world,

The one thing also that is common in all of that is use of cinematographic style
of frame where each frame is so dramatic and well passed that it feels like
reading a movie. This can also be reason why all of his comics are adopted to big
screen and his comics serve as a cut to scene copy or a blueprint of the whole
movie.

How he changed comic industry through his comics-

It can be discussed through analysing each work but one thing was certain why
he shines out the most from the other comic artist because he knows all the
character and world so well and starts questioning about everything in it and
later compare to real life scenarios and last adding his own soul into the comic
like what he would have done or wanted to see.

Daredevil 1980s- It was his big title debut and changes the whole tone of the
series where he introduces the most popular character from the daredevil
series i.e-Elektra. He took over the writing duties for Daredevil, he gave the
comic the tone of a film noir. His art made more stylistic use of shadows than
previous issues had, while writing-wise, the comics' narration went from typical
exposition/recap to a hard-edged internal monologue right out of a Dashiell
Hammett novel. Before that he had a central superhero tone of superhero story
and fighting C grade villains, but when he took over, he reinvented the
character where the Man Without Fear, Daredevil stopped facing down
supervillains and instead fought mostly ordinary criminals and gangsters, often
pumping the patrons of Josie's bar for info. This made Daredevil stand out all
the more next to his peers in the Marvel superhero series.
BATMAN: The dark Knight returns-A book can be written on this comic that
how it changed the comic industry. Whoever is a comic fan and knows comic
knows that this is the best batman series ever written. Prior to this book, the
public perception of Batman was that of a clown. A charming joke that provided
light relief on a Saturday morning. It was a far cry from the character's
previous dark take on crime, and The Dark Knight Returns restored the
character to the status while deconstructing comics in the process. Before this
no one has ever seen an old superhero, it was always assumable that they are
supposed to be young, charming and does not fear anything, but batman was
opposite of all that in this series, ideation behind this concept was that because
frank miller himself felt the fear of getting old as he was going to enter in his
30 and this fear, he infused into the character making it more realistic and
unique. t's a true deconstruction of the genre that I believe has went on to
influence things like Metal Gear Solid 4, Rambo, Unforgiven, the list goes on.
Batman has never been grittier, grumpier, wiser, or more dangerous. He's a
beast of a man, and this interpretation of the character is one of the film's
strongest selling points. And the comic is so dramatic that many of the frames
inspired the Synder’s as well as Nolan’s batman movies. There is more to it the
splash pages, violence, pacing of the story, his costume and the colour tone that
suits the tone of the comic, the perfect way to show the antagonist and the
main character fight his own fear.

Sin city- its one of the most unique a comic I have ever scene because of its’
unique narration and monochrome style of comic. It’s a hardcore film noir genre
everything seems kind of dark and itchy with a pinch of humour here and there
but it’s a very dark comic. Though use of colour is such that it does it is work
and very symbolic like use of red for blood and to gain attention as well as use
of yellow.
As mention above the miller is a fantastic sequential artist here we can see his
example where he has shown a scene in a most dramatic and cinematic way that
he does not fear wasting a whole page with only one dialogue, and that also
supports the flow of the story and gives the sense of time and tone. One of the
biggest elements of the art style Miller applied in the series is the use of
negative space. Within the panels, figures and objects become indistinguishable
in some ways from the predominantly black and white palette. Between the lines,
things get more confusing.
Typically, sound effects show up inside panels, but in Sin City, the classic comic
exclamations of "BLAM!" or "KA-POW!" are conjured out of lighting effects
(like through slatted windows) or through the outlines of the actual comic
panels.

300 comic vs movie - movies are made for people who read the comics and
wanted the movie to be as it is, in this case it can be said that the comic was
served as a storyboard for the whole movie even the dialogues, were some
things were tweaks, like scenes were deleted or extended to make it more
cinematic or dramatic. However, the feel of art style of the comic is impossible
to show in the screens, the dramatic effect all the panels have is mind blowing
and another experience. And even the director Zack Snyder is known as person
who stays true to its source, not changing the plot adapted from a comic book
generally. In the comic Miller makes stunning visuals and emotional scenes that
conveys rage, fear, strength and honour and loaded with action and chaos that
truly serves the purpose of a war comic.

One of the true success of a wonderful adaptation is basically the casting, the
casting team has done a great job packing it with breath-taking cinematography,
dialogues and fight sequences that makes it cinema worthy. The colours used in
the book and in the movie are way too similar, the lighting and shades in the
movie, the used of red hues, is exactly what is there in the book. As I said in
the beginning review that there are two types of people, but sometimes the
story is so near too perfect that by just changing it would destroy the essence
of it, and the main thing about adaptation is to capture the essence or feel of
the story weather in Avengers most of the things were different but the
essence was there because all the built up as well as in the 300 movie some
scenes were added to reach out to more audience which made the story more
understandable and real. Tone of the story is same, dark, violent, dramatic and
lots of nudes and also, frank miller’s style where the main character is beaten
up to hell with lots of gore and racist scenes, still making it read worthy/watch.

It also can be the reason why all the directors want to have a comic adaption of
his comic, cause its serves as a readymade blueprint to movie. Though he
himself prefer comic more but moreover its another adventure to his story and
mind on big screen.

I think he is one of the greatest writers that always thinks out the box in the
genre of superhero and makes the more real to us, he has created a unique style
of representing the characters and making them suffer along with the art style
that is sometimes more of a painting. He has redefined some of the most classic
characters such as Batman, Daredevil and created a new universe through dark
horse publishers, The comics written by him are often considered as furious
acid-pulp masterpieces.
Common style is Miller’s authorial voice, which often mixes together with first-
person narration and an omniscient (knowing everything) second- or third-person
perspective, creating a dreamlike closeness to the story's characters.

His art style I generally inspired by classical style of sequential art, with some
modern pop art style and also influenced from Manga’s. and in a more cinematic
way, that is why his works become more feasible for adaptions, noir narration,
grit, violence is always present in his stories. His drawing style features a lot of
contrast and deep shadows, which creates dramatic looking sceneries. To
summarize he is a complicated writer with lots of weird stuff going around his
head and always up for to beat the shit out of the character.
