BUTTERFLY CHECK VALVE

1. Safety
TIS valves are designed and manufactured to the highest standards and their safety of operation is generally ensured.
However, valves may be potentially dangerous if they are operated improperly or are not installed for their intended use;
unauthorized, unintentional and unexpected actuation as well as any hazardous movements caused by stored energy
(pressurized air, water under pressure) must be prevented.

Arbitrary alterations of this product and the parts supplied with it are not allowed.

La TIS Service S.p.A. will not assume any liability for consequential damage due to non-compliance with these instruc-
tions. When using this valve, the generally acknowledged rules of technology have to be observed. However, these
valves can be a danger when handled by untrained staff, so:
installation, servicing, maintenance and inspection work (as well as the replacement of spare parts of the valve)
is forbidden for not qualified staff.

The plant operator is responsible for determining the suitability of the staff or for ensuring the relevant qualifications.
In addition to this, the plant operator needs to ensure that all employees have understood these operation and mainte-
nance instruction.

Before performing any operation on the pipe or on the valve, make sure that the pipeline section be free of hydraulic
loads; couplings and connections must never be disassembled when they are under pressure.
Before dismantling the valve, the pipeline must be completely emptied; carry out the complete emptying of all the duct
concerned, special care needs to be taken in case of residue which may continue flowing.
After completing the maintenance works and before resuming operation, check all connections for tightness.
If work is carried out in the vicinity of the valve, which leads to soiling (concrete work, masonry, painting, sandblasting),
the valve must be covered effectively.
If the valve is installed as an end-line valve, it must be ensured that the free outlet side will not accessible to interference
from any source.

2. Transport and storage

2.1. Transport
Transport has to be carried out carefully; inexpert handling may cause damages to the valve.
For transportation to its installation site, the valve must be packed in stable packaging material suitable for the size of
the valve. It must be ensured that the valve is protected against atmospheric influences and external damage.

44 IOM150563-ED05/2015
IOM130486 - ED05/2015
BUTTERFLY CHECK VALVE

When the valve is shipped under specific climatic conditions (e.g. overseas transport), it must be specially protected and
wrapped in plastic film and a desiccant must be added. The factory-applied corrosion protection and any assemblies
must be protected against damage by external influences during transport and storage.
For transport purposes and also to support assembly, eye bolts can be used for lifting if present. If not, for manipulation
should be used transport belts. The disc, the lever and the counterweight are unsuitable for this purpose. The length and
positioning of the cables/belts must ensure that the valve is in a horizontal position during the entire lifting procedure.
A valve without visible transport damages should be left in the factory packaging during storage and transport, and only
unpacked immediately before installation in the pipe section.
Prior to mounting, such damages are to be repaired in an appropriate manner.

2.2. Storage
During storage, the valve should be protected against sand, dust and any other impurities, and therefore the valve
should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid long-term storage of the valve outdoors exposed to the effects of
rain, sunlight or frost. The direct exposure of the valves to radiation heat emitted by radiators should be avoided. It is
also recommended to utilize the original shipping container and packing materials to properly store the valve.

When hoisting the valve, always use lifting straps threaded through the lifting lugs and around the valve’s upper neck
(FIG.A). Hoisting the valve with the lifting straps threaded around the lever and weight or the hydraulic damper unit is
forbidden (FIG.B). Use special caution when hoisting, transporting and installing the valve. The hydraulic damper unit
center of gravity may deviate from the valve center line. This may tilt the valve and damper during lifting. Even minor
impacts may damage the hydraulic damper unit or change the damper’s or valve’s adjustments.

3. Identification
According to EN 19, on all the valves is casted the nominal diameter (DN), the nominal pressure (PN), the body material
and the manufacturer's logo.
A rating plate attached or casted to the body, contains at least the following indication:
1. MANUFACTURER’S LOGO;
2. NOMINAL DIAMETER;
3. NOMINAL PRESSURE;
4. SERIAL NUMBER;
5. YEAR OF PRODUCTION.

4. Proper use and function description

Butterfly check valve is a shut-off device allowing media to flow in one direction only. It operates to the principle of a free
-swinging check valve. The disc is double offset to a very high degree and is opened by the upstream flow. The closing
moment resulting from the weight of the disc and weight loaded lever acts against this opening moment. This closing
moment initiates closing when the flow ceases. It can be reduced within certain limits by moving the counterweight on
the level towards the shaft. In any case, it must be ensured that the valve disc closes even without counter pressure. It is
used for liquid media up to +70°C. Break off the flow is achieved by turning the disk tightly fastened on the stem. Relia-
ble sealing is secured by soft leaning of the disc on the body sealing surface. Sealing ring is on the valve disc. Sealing
ring is supported by disc ring. In closed position, the elastic profile sealing ring is pressed to the conical seat surface in-
side the body providing safe sealing in both flow directions. Profile seal ring is completely unstressed when the valve is
in open position and can be disassembled without having to disassemble the valve.

4.1 Operating condition

It is not permissible to use the valve with media containing gas or oil. It may result the destruction of the EPDM seals
and O-rings. NBR seals should be used instead of EPDM. Butterfly check valve should be used in media in which there
is no risk of clogging. It can be used for the following media: water, raw and cooling water (with appropriate corrosion
protection). La TIS Service S.p.A Standard butterfly check valves are equipped with EPDM seals, in case of differing
operating condition, please consult the manufacturer.
Using the valve above temperature and pressure limits can damage the valve.
Ultimate responsibility for material selection rest with the customer, as only the customer knows the particular use of the
valve and the exact operating parameters to which it will be subjected.
In case of any uncertainty referred to the valve design specifications, please contact the manufacturer.

4.2 Maximum permissible flow velocity

According to EN 593, butterfly valves are designed for the specific velocities in liquid media as shown in the following
table.

PN 10 16 25-40
Recommended flow velocity [m/s] 3 4 5

4.3 Hydraulic damper unit

The hydraulic damper unit (Art.D160-161-162-163) is installed on the valve to stabilize disc movement and to close the
disc properly. The adjustments and factory settings should not be changed without manufacturers approval.
In case different adjustment must be done on site, please refer to separate technical info referred to hydraulic shock ab-
sorber.

5. Installation
The installation of the valves in the system may only be carried out by expert personnel.
Check the valves and the actuators after transport for damages.
Damaged butterfly check valves must not be installed. Before the installation, check validity of the valve by opening and
closing it several times. Sealing surfaces must be properly and thoroughly cleaned.
The valve could be installed indoor or outdoor places.
The preferred installation position for the valve is with the butterfly check valve stem horizontal. Prior to installation,
check the accuracy of opening and closing the valve by opening and closing it several times. Before the installation of
the valve, the ends of the pipeline must be aligned and have plane parallel connection faces. Otherwise, impermissibly
high loads during operation can occur. It can lead even to fractures.
For installation between flanges, butterfly check valve must be carefully centered with the flange screws during installa-
tion. Follow the arrow on the body for mounting direction.
For large diameters (DN ≥ 400) the check valve should be built in with a compensator for installation purposes to enable
easy mounting and dismantling.
Before the valve is put into operation the position of the lever and weight should be adjusted to avoid hydraulic shock. If
however there is a hydraulic shock, then a damping device must be installed to regulate shut off times. In new pipe-
lines, the butterfly check valve must not be put into operation before removal of all dirt and mud from pipeline.
Butterfly check valve is a very robust and simple shut off device, and its maintenance is very easy.
It is recommended to check its good functioning monthly and, if necessary, replace worn out parts.
Spare parts can be obtained from La TIS Service S.p.A sales department.
For bigger profiles (>DN400) it is recommended to install on solid ground with additional frame support (groundwork).

IOM130486 - ED05/2015
BUTTERFLY CHECK VALVE

When installing the valve into the pipeline, make sure it is tension-free if possible. The pipeline forces transmitted to the valve must
not exceed the values specified in EN 1074-2. The space between the flanges must be large enough so that the coating of the raised
face of the flange during installation is not damaged. The flanges of the pipeline must not be pulled towards the valve during installa-
tion. Before putting the valve into operation, clean and purge the corresponding pipeline sections.
If the temperature of the fluid it’s higher then the maximum working temperature, the valve and its joints have to be protected by cus-
tomer.
In case of works around the valve causing dirt (e.g. painting, masonry or working with concrete), the valve must be protected by ade-
quate covering.
For assembly in drinking water pipelines, suitable sealing materials, lubricants and process materials must be used which are ap-
proved for use in drinking water pipelines.
Before first closing, hard/abrasive impurities (welding beads, rust particles etc.) must be removed from the pipe section.

5.1 Assembly instructions and fittings

Prior to installation, all components essential for proper function (seat ring, sealing ring) must be thoroughly cleaned; the valve must
be checked for possible damages and protected against the dirt during installation on the site.
Proper loads suspension devices, means of transportation and means of lifting devices must be ensured for the assembling.
Since the disk of the butterfly check valve protrudes beyond the overall length in open position, it must be ensured that there is suffi-
cient space between the disk and other installations in the pipeline (e.g. devices, valves,…). Suspending the valve by its disk may
lead to damage or destruction of the disk or valve.

5.2 Installation location

The pressure on the closed valve must not exceed its nominal pressure.

During installation, sufficient space for function checks and maintenance work has to be provided.
For protection of outdoor installation valves, it is necessary to provide adequate covers against extreme atmospheric influences.

5.3 Installation position in the pipeline

If the valve is used in contaminated media, a filter with suitable mesh size must be provided upstream of the valve in order to prevent
malfunction.
Between butterfly check valve and an inspection valve, an elbow, T-pieces and Y-filters should be provided minimal distance of (3-
5xDN) as otherwise irregular flow may disturb the proper function of the valve.
A damping zone between the branch/elbow and the valve is ideal.
When the pump is shut off the operation with slightly rotating weight, a sudden back flow and accelerated closing appears. That leads
to back slam if the procedure is done without dashpot actuator. Back pressure on open disc is thereby pressure of pumps.

6. Proper use
Do not exceed the maximum admissible temperature of the equipment.
Do not exceed the maximum admissible operating overpressure.
Do not load a close valve beyond the maximum admissible nominal pressure.
Do not extend the control elements (e.g. with a lever).
Do not use aggressive medium because of surface protection damages and corroding of vital parts of the valve.
In phase of maintenance/repair the valve, use only La T.i.S Service S.p.A approved spare parts; any other not original parts would
void the manufacturer's warranty.
User is responsible for ensuring with appropriate safety devices to not exceed the maximum working pressure of the valve.

7. Maintenance
The valve should be checked for tightness, proper operation and corrosion protection "at least once per year"
In case of extreme operating conditions inspection should be performed more frequently.

7.1 Recommendations for the replacement of parts

Profile seals and O-rings must be replaced whenever necessary.

The replacement intervals depend on the operating conditions.
When being replaced, the profile seal and the O-rings should always be lightly greased. Use lubricants with approval for application
with foodstuffs or drinking water.

Seal replacement
The profile seal can be replaced without disassembly of
the disc and all safety precautions need to be taken.
Replacement of the sealing ring:
Open the disc (2) until the profile seal emerges from
the body (1). Unfasten the retaining ring screws (5).
Remove retaining ring (4) and sealing ring (3).
Clean the disc (2) in the sealing zone.
Check the seat ring in the body for damage or deposits.
Insert the new sealing ring (3) into the seat of the disc
and slightly grease it.
Insert the screws (5) and fasten them little by little.

The valves should not be used at higher temperature than declared because of protection against corrosion and material hardness.
The valve for higher pressure than declared cannot be used because of material hardness and functional positions. The valve also
cannot be used for aggressive medium because of surface protection damages and corroding of vital parts of the valve. For chang-
ing of the medium, contact La TIS Service technical department. DO NOT REPLACE SEALING PARTS OF THE BODY AND
SHAFT with inappropriate rubber due to possible leakage of fluids from valve.

9. Disposal and recycling

TIS valves are designed and constructed to ensure extremely long lifetime.
At the end of their life, they have to be removed/replaced so the valve must be disassembled and each component
separated and sorted according to materials, i.e.:

 various metals;
 plastics components;
 greases and oils;
 electronic components.
Generally applies the following:

 During disassembly phase, carefully collect greases and oils; these substances are hazardous to water and must
not be released into the environment;
 Arrange for controlled waste disposal or for separate recycling according to materials;
! Observe the regional regulations for waste disposal/recycling.
