Preface
We are what we eat. Our body requires essential nutrients for
its well- being and these nutrients come from the food that we eat
every day. Aside from this, our practices as well, affect our body
functioning.

This module presents the practices that affect the digestive

system. It contains interesting activities that lead to the discovery of
specific science concepts with the hope that students will enjoy as
they learn.

This material is accompanied by a Session Guide that will

guide the teachers in the delivery of the module. Moreover, this can
be utilized by the teachers in a remedial instruction for the students
who experienced difficulties in learning this particular topic. This can
also be used as learning resource for students who are at risk of
dropping by giving them the chance to comply with the requirements
of the subject.

It is important to note however, that if the whole module will be

utilized by the students, the accompanying Session Guide will not be
given to them for it contain the key answers in the different activities
and assessments.

o Identify practices that affect the digestive system.

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

o assess your own eating habits;

o identify the foods that should be eaten often, and which should be eaten less;
o suggest helpful practices that affect the digestive system; and

As a kid, there are times that you would be unaware of what you are eating,
the amount or how often you have eaten.

What was the last meal that you have eaten? What did you eat? Have you
ever experienced skipping a meal? How did it feel? How about eating too much?

Eating too small, too much or skipping meals has negative effects to your
body. You have learned from the previous lesson that the energy needed by the
body to do your daily activities/ task such as playing, studying or even simply
staying awake comes from the food you have eaten and digested into simpler or
smaller substances that our body can use.

A man having a healthy breakfast. A man having unhealthy breakfast.

Source: https://www.google.com.ph/search?tbm=isch&sa=1&q=negative+effects+of+skipping+breakfast

What do you think will happen if you skip breakfast?

You would feel dizzy, unfocused or worst is you will faint. Breakfast is an
essential part of the day just as other meals are, it provides you with the energy
needed for the day.

Do the following activity to identify practices that affect the digestive system.

4
Get to Know the Food Pyramid
 The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) has developed a
pyramid for Filipinos to show which food should be eaten less and more.
 Those that are in the bottom of the pyramid should be eaten more
because they are the Go foods, they provide energy.
 Those foods that can be found in the middle of the pyramid should be
eaten in moderation, they provide you with vitamins, minerals and
proteins.
 Those at the top of the pyramid like butter, fat and the others should be
eaten less.

5
Do this!

Activity 2
My Meal Plan
On the plate below, paste or draw pictures of food that you should be eating that
follows the balanced diet. Be sure to name each food.

6
Practices for a Healthier Digestive System
You have evaluated yourself of how well you do for your digestive system,
now here are some tips and recommended practices you can do and start with
to achieve a healthier body.
  
Eat a balanced diet

A balanced diet is a meal complete with carbohydrates, proteins,
vitamins and fats that are needed by the body in varying amounts. 

Eating too much of any of these can also be bad, too much
carbohydrates could result to high blood sugar level while eating too
 much fat can give too much cholesterol.
  
Eat your Fruits and Vegetables

These two groups of foods are rich in nutrients and vitamins.

These nutrients boost your immune system. 

They make our organs work better, make us glow, digest foods faster
and so much more.

 
Let’s exercise

Not moving enough can slow down your metabolism and can make
you gain weight.

Even dancing can be an exercise and the same time fun. 

Do some exercise or go out and play with your friends. So, move that
body!

  
Control those sweets

These foods can get in between the teeth and cause a tooth decay.

They can also make the blood sugar level too high which can lead to
diabetes.

But they can also be a quick source of energy when feeling weak,
better keep one at reach when needed.

7
 
 Too much oil can be bad.

They can be a great source of cholesterol which can pile up in
thelining of the blood vessel that can lead to atherosclerosis and
hypertension and worst is heart attack (myocardial infarct).

Don’t skip meals.

The stomach is naturally acidic, when you haven’t eaten a meal, the
acid can rise to the esophagus causing a heartburn.

The acid in your stomach will wear away its lining until an ulcer is
formed.

Drink plenty of water

Your body is made up of 55-60% water.

It is used by the body to regulate body temperature, to eliminate waste
product and to help in the digestion of food.

The recommended water intake is between 6-8 glasses a day.

It is far better liquid than your soft drink and powdered juice because it
has 0 calorie and fat.

Activity 2
Four Pics, One Word
Direction: All four pictures in each given set serve as clues to identify some foods
and practices that affect the digestive system. Identify the word through the given
pictures.

Question 1. Which of the following pictures suggest healthy practices?

Question 2. Instead of eating junk foods during recess, what foods do you suggest to
beeaten by students like you?

Question 3. What practices can you suggest tominimize obesity?

9
Activity 4
A Pledge to a Healthier Me

Complete the pledge below with your own words and promise, be sure that you
would be able to follow your own pledge. Don’t promise something you can’t do.
