Introduction

Professor Carlyle Alan Thayer is perhaps the best-known foreign scholar of

international relations in Vietnam. I've known him for more than 20 years, but only
now have I met him in his hometown, where he works. His assessments of the region
are still very sharp and subtle, and he also helped train many PhDs for Vietnam.

Nguyen Hung Son, Vice President, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (May 25, 2023)

On May 10, 2023, I was invited by Australia’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Andrew

Goledzinowski, to join the 50 Stories Project to mark the 50th Anniversary of Australia-
Vietnam Relations. The 50 Stories Project will “highlight the significant and long-
standing contribution of… Australian expats in Vietnam to the Australia-Vietnam
bilateral relationship… As one of the most recognized and valued contributors to the
bilateral relationship over many years, your participation in this project would be
significant and highly appreciated. I hope you will agree to your story being published
as a short media profile.”

I agreed. By way of preparation, I reviewed my Curriculum Vitae for all relevant

information covering the years from 1973 to 2023. I was interviewed on 9 June for
ninety minutes. The interview will form the basis for a 500-word profile to be
published on the home page of the Australian Embassy in Hanoi.

During the interview I made two points about my contribution to Australia-Vietnam

relations. First, I was there at the beginning. And second, my role as an academic was
to inform Australians – government officials, Australian Defence Force personnel,
academics, think tanks, special interest groups and the media – about Vietnam. At the
same time, my role included informing Vietnamese – government officials, members
of the Vietnam People’s Army, academics, researchers and the media – about
Australia.

At the beginning. I was a PhD Research Scholar in the Department of International

Relations, Research School of Pacific Studies at The Australian National University in
Canberra from November 1971 until December 1974. I wrote my PhD thesis on
decision-making in the Vietnam Workers’ Party, later renamed the Vietnam
Communist Party.

In December 1972, the Whitlam Labor Government was elected to office. A month
later the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring the Peace in Vietnam was
signed in Paris. In February 1973, the Australian Government recognized the
Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV, North Vietnam).

At that time, I was a member of the Australia-Vietnam Society (AVS). In that capacity
I joined other members at the Canberra Airport in 1973 to welcome Nguyen Dy Nien,
the DRV’s first diplomatic representative to Australia. Subsequently, the AVS met with
visiting delegations from the DRV and hosted social activities for Vietnamese students.
I first visited reunified Vietnam in August 1981 as a member of a four-person
Australian academic delegation.

Academic role. This Bibliography brings together for the first time a comprehensive
detailed inventory of 394 academic papers and presentations on Australia-Vietnam
relations sub-divided into six categories:

1. Thirty-one academic papers and presentations focused on bilateral Australia-

Vietnam relations since 1980 (not including academic publications such as
monographs, journal articles and book chapters);

2. Forty-four major academic conference papers delivered in Vietnam on all matter

of subjects of interest to my hosts since 2004;

3. Forty-six major academic papers on Vietnam delivered in Australia since 1974;

4. Twenty-nine lectures and presentations given to workshops, seminars and other

venues in Vietnam since 1981;

5. Two hundred and thirteen lectures and presentations on Vietnam delivered to a

wide audience in Australia since 1973; and

6. Thirty-one Vietnam-related academic activities (chair, commentator, convenor,

discussant, moderator, rapporteur etc.)

Next, the Bibliography includes a tailored Curriculum Vitae to illustrate my academic

career, teaching responsibilities, honours, research grants and consultancies,
scholarships, and professional activities as a Southeast Asia regional specialist with
special expertise on Vietnam.
