RADius 700 Transponder

System description
RADius is developed for applications in need of a robust and reliable relative positioning
system. RADius consists of one or several interrogators typically located on a moving
vessel and one or several transponders typically located on a stationary vessel/rig.
The RADius system measures the distance and bearing between the interrogators on the
moving vessel and the transponders. All transponders deployed on the target have unique
identities, thus multiple transponders can be tracked simultaneously. This improves the
integrity and availability of the system.

Transponder unit description

The transponder is a radar reflector used in a
RADius system. Each transponder returns a
unique ID code to the RADius Interrogator Unit
(transmitter/receiver). This allows for radar
based measurements of the distance and bearing
between the transponder and an Interrogator,
which is typically located on a vessel. The
transponder is powered by a lithium battery.

Equipment labelling
The transponder has this main label.

Product restrictions

Kongsberg RADius 700 Transponder

Installation

Installation summary
The installation of a transponder consists of
• Finding a suitable location for the transponder unit
• Setting the transponder identification (TID) code
• Mounting the transponder on a rail or mast
• Connecting the activator plug and thus applying power to the transponder unit
• Operational verification

Preparations
Necessary tools and equipment
We assume that you are equipped with a standard set of tools. This tool set must
comprise spanners suitable for the bolts supplied in the mounting kit.
Unless stated otherwise, all mounting equipment (such as bolts, nuts, washers, screws
etc.) referred to within this document is to be supplied by the customer or the shipyard.

Safety
General safety guidelines should be followed when working in mast and on deck.

Determining the best location for the transponder(s)

For location of the transponder(s), consider the following:
• The transponder is placed on a reference location, for example a rig or platform.
• The transponder should be mounted to a rigid mast, rail or wall to limit the risk of
mechanical resonances caused by vibration.
• The transponder requires free line of sight to Interrogator Unit(s) in its intended
operational sector.

10 RAD-D-INST700_00/1.0
Installation

• Avoiding obstructions and parallel metal surfaces in the signal path will facilitate
optimal range and accuracy for any Interrogator Unit tracking the transponder signal.
• The orientation of the transponder is optimised according to its 90-degree operating
sector (both vertical and horizontal) and to the operational location for the vessel(s)
containing the Interrogator Unit(s).
• The longest transponder axis must be horizontally oriented.

A This axis must be horizontal

Important
Transponders located on the same side of the vessel/rig must have different transponder
identification codes (TID). Minimum TID interval is 10.

Caution

The longest transponder axis must be horizontally oriented otherwise the

RADius system will not be able to track the transponders.

Setting the transponder unit ID (TID)

Before the transponder unit is taken to the final installation site and mounted to a mast or
railing, you must set the transponder identification code (TID).

Prerequisite
Make sure that you have the 9–pin activation plug ready before you start.

RAD-D-INST700_00/1.0 11
Kongsberg RADius 700 Transponder

Context
Each transponder working against one Interrogator Unit must have a unique transponder
identification code (TID). The factory setting is default 150 but can be changed as
required. Each transponder unit should be labelled with its transponder ID (TID).
Important
Since the TID code is intended to be changed by the installers, the default code is not
written on the equipment label. Therefore you must write the actual code which you
set with a waterproof marker on the main label before the transponder unit is put into
operation.

WARNING
Do not use the same TID code for two transponders on the same side
of the vessel as this will invalidate angle and distance measurements.

Procedure
1 Unscrew and remove the sealing cap at the rear of the transponder unit.

4 Set the preferred TID code by use of a screwdriver or similar.

5 Put the TID setting switch back into the activation plug, replace the screw locking
ring and tighten by using the sealing cap.
Use the flat end of the TID setting switch as a guide to insert the switch correctly.
6 Place the activation plug on top of the socket, twist and tighten.
Important
Make sure that the activation plug is properly tightened to prevent water penetration.
When screwing the activation plug to the socket you have also activated the battery
and applied power to the transponder unit.

Result
You have now applied power to the transponder unit, set the transponder identification
code for this particular transponder and made it available for communication with an
Interrogator Unit.

Verifying transponder operation

After the system has been installed and powered up, the proper operation of the
transponder must be verified by making it visible to the Interrogator of a RADius system
(which is located in a safe area – usually on an approaching vessel). The Interrogator
should be within tracking range and have a known distance and known relative angle
(bearing) from the RADius transponder.
For the low power transponder we recommend less than 500 m from the Interrogator
Unit.
