COURSE SYLLABUS IN THE LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL

First Semester, 2020-2021

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a study of the life and writings of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and other heroes and heroines and their crucial role
behind the making of the Filipino nation. The study of Rizal’s novels and other writings would allow the students a view
into the historical realities of the Philippines and the world in the 19th century and relate them to the contemporary social
and global situations.
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:
 Fundamental Knowledge in Philippine History
 Basic Skills in Research: Synthesis, Ethical Measures, and Information Management
 Intermediate Skills in Oral and Written Communication
COURSE OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, the student are expected to:
1. Apply the ideologies and principles of Rizal and other heroes and heroines to promote patriotism and nationalism
in 21st century condition.
2. Exhibit mastery in Philippine history especially values from Filipino cultural and colonial experience.
3. Employ previous knowledge in Philippine History, Sociology and Anthropology, and other courses related to the
Social Sciences to fully understand the context of Rizal’s Life and Works.

TEACHING AND ONLINE CLASSROOM PARAMETERS:


 For the sake of convenience, students are encouraged to have an Online approach for this semester.
 The class shall treat the course as a living body of knowledge, such that, it is open for questions and criticism.
 Consistent with our advocacy of democracy, the class shall use small group and plenary discussions.
 The class shall utilize Google for Education / GSuite; online streaming app, YOUTUBE; and the popular social
media site, FACEBOOK, for virtual content sharing, where participation is compulsory for those who have
selected an OBL approach and will remain optional for those who are in a Purely Modular approach.
 There shall only be three topics every term which will be discussed briefly during synchronous online classes
(once-a-week) and comprehensively discussed in the asynchronous video lectures.
 Oral and written, individual and group exercises shall be employed as tools of assessment. There will be a weekly
assessment task and a monthly performance task which will measure both of the student’s cognitive and
psychomotor domains.
 The class shall promote problem-posing and problem-solving approaches to learning.
 Independent research/study for groups and individuals is highly encouraged.
