Background To The Enthronement Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus

The Origins Of The Sacred Heart Devotion Can Be Traced Back To
The Sacred Scriptures. The Devotion To The Sacred Heart Started In
The Quiet Stillness Of Mary’s Womb When His Little Heart First
Began To Beat. The First Written Account Of This Devotion To The
Sacred Heart Can Be Found In The Gospels When John The Beloved
Disciple John Leaned On Jesus.
This Devotion Has Been Cherished By Saints Throughout History.
As A Result, Prayers To The Sacred Heart And The Shoulder Wound
Of Christ Emerged Among The Faithful As Personal Devotions.
These Private Acts Of Worship Aided Christians In Directing Their
Attention Towards The Suffering And Death Of Christ, Allowing
Them To Deepen Their Love For The Saviour Who Endured
Immense Pain And Sacrifice On Behalf Of Humanity.
In 1670, Fr. Jean Eudes Celebrated The First Feast Of The Sacred
Heart. Around That Time, Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque Began
Experiencing Frequent Visions Of Jesus. On 27 December 1673, On
The Feast Of St. John, Jesus Allowed Margaret Mary, Like St.
Gertrude Before Her, To Rest Her Head Upon His Heart. He
Expressed His Immense Love And Selected Her To Share His Love
And Goodness With All.
Out Of The Numerous Visions Experienced By Sister Margaret Mary,
Three Of Them, Known As The Three Great Apparitions, Were
Particularly Significant For Shaping And Practicing The Devotion.
These Revelations , Known As The Three Great Apparitions,
Occurred In The Chapel Of The Visitation Convent In Paray-Le-
Monial, France, In 1675 During The Octave Of Corpus Christi. Jesus
Asked That The Feast Of The Sacred Heart Be Celebrated Each Year
On The Friday Following Corpus Christi, In Reparation For The
Ingratitude Of Men For The Sacrifice Which Christ Had Made For
Them.
Nearly 200 Years Later, Father Mateo Crawley Boevey Found
Himself Cured Of Illness While On A Pilgrimage To The Chapel Of
The Visitation, The Same Place Where St. Margaret Mary Had
Encountered The Sacred Heart. This Profound Experience Led Father
Mateo To Make A Heartfelt Commitment To Fulfill Jesus' Requests
And Eventually Received Papal Approval To Establish The
Enthronement Of The Sacred Heart In Families On August 24, 1907.

The Devotion To The Sacred Heart Finds Its Origins In The

Scriptures, Starting With The Moment When Jesus' Little Heart
Began To Beat In The Quiet Stillness Of Mary's Womb. The Gospels
Provide The First Written Account Of This Devotion, Specifically
When The Beloved Disciple John Leaned On Jesus. Throughout
History, Saints Have Cherished This Devotion, Leading To The
Emergence Of Personal Devotions Such As Prayers To The Sacred
Heart And The Shoulder Wound Of Christ Among The Faithful.
These Private Acts Of Worship Aided Christians To Focus On Christ's
Suffering And Death, Deepening Their Love For The Saviour Who
Endured Immense Pain And Sacrifice For Humanity.
In 1670, Fr. Jean Eudes Celebrated The First Feast Of The Sacred
Heart. Around That Time, Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque Began
Experiencing Frequent Visions Of Jesus.

On December 27, 1673, During The Feast Of St. John, Jesus Granted
Margaret Mary The Privilege, Like St. Gertrude Before Her, Of
Resting Her Head Upon His Heart. He Expressed His Immense Love
And Selected Her To Share His Love And Goodness With All.
Among The Visions Experienced By Sister Margaret Mary, Three
Significant Ones, Known As The Three Great Apparitions, Took
Place In The Chapel Of The Visitation Convent In Paray-Le-Monial,
France, During The Octave Of Corpus Christi In 1675. Jesus Asked
That The Feast Of The Sacred Heart Be Celebrated Each Year On The
Friday Following Corpus Christi, In Reparation For Humanity's
Ingratitude Towards His Sacrificial Love.
Nearly 200 Years Later, Father Mateo Crawley Boevey Was
Miraculously Cured During A Pilgrimage To The Chapel Of The
Visitation, The Same Place Where St. Margaret Mary Encountered
The Sacred Heart. This Profound Experience Inspired Father Mateo
To Dedicate Himself To Fulfilling Jesus' Requests And Ultimately
Gain Papal Approval To Establish The Enthronement Of The Sacred
Heart In Families On August 24, 1907.

What Is An Enthronement?
Enthronement Of The Sacred Heart Is A Ceremony In Which The
Family Solemnly And Publicly Acknowledges The Sacred Heart As
King Of The Home. This Is Done By Formally Enthroning An Image
Or Statue Of The Sacred Heart In A Place Of Honour In The Home.
This Act Of Enthronement Also Serves As A Reparative Gesture,
Seeking To Compensate For Those Who Have Dethroned Jesus In
Our Secular World.

Simply Put, It Is A Ritual Of Prayers And Blessings, To Establish The

Social Reign Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus In The Home. Inspired
By The Words Of Our Lord To St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, "I Will
Reign Through My Heart," Its Objective Is To Preserve And Fortify
The Family.
There Is A Prayer For The Renewal Of This Consecration, To Be Said
Each Night With The Family Prayers.

What Is The Enthronement Of The Two Hearts?

Two Of The More Well-Known Symbols Of Christ's Love – And That
Of The Everlasting Love Of His Mother Mary – Are Images Of Their
Sacred Hearts, Pictured Separately Or Together. Placed On A
Prominent Wall Or Mantel, Such Displays Are Called Enthronements,
And Have A Long History Throughout Our Church's Existence.

Is It Acceptable To Have Images Of Jesus And Mary Placed

Together During A Family's Celebration Of The Enthronement
Of The Sacred Heart?
Yes. The Combined Image Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus And The
Immaculate Heart Of Mary Represents Their Boundless Love For
People, Families, And Individuals, With Mary Being The First To
Adore And Comprehend Jesus' Love. Their Presence In The Home
Brings About Transformation In The Hearts Of Family Members.
Key Aspects Of A Transformed Life Through The Enthronement
The Enthronement Ceremony Signifies The Start Of A Renewed Life
Characterized By Love And Wholehearted Obedience To The
Commandments Of Christ And The Church. This Transformed Life
Emphasizes:
 Obedience To Christ And Church Commandments
 The Power Of Family Prayers Particularly In The Presence Of
The Enthroned King.
 Daily Recitation Of The Holy Rosary
 Regular Participation In Holy Mass And Worthy Reception Of
Communion
 Regular And Contrite Confession
 Rejecting Pagan Customs And Ideas That Harm Christian Homes
 Making Reparation For Offenses Like Abortion, Divorce, Birth
Control, And Sensuality

Purpose
By Placing Our Lord And His Interests As The Foremost Priority, The
Sacred Heart Assumes Authority Over The Family's Concerns. As
Promised To St. Margaret Mary, Those Families Who Enthrone Him
As King And Allow Him To Reign In Their Homes Are Blessed And
Sanctified. The Enthronement Of The Sacred Heart Has Resulted In
Countless Conversions Of Individuals And Families, Earning Praise
And Blessings From Four Popes Of The Twentieth Century For Its
Founder, Father Mateo.

Promises To Those Who Devote Themselves To The Sacred Heart

Of Jesus
Our Lord Jesus Christ Made The Following Promises Through St
Margaret Mary In The Late 1600s To Those Who Devote Themselves
To The Sacred Heart Of Jesus:

Renewal
The Enthronement Can Occur On Any Date And Ought To Be
Renewed Annually. Here Are Some Suggested Times:
 Feast Of Sacred Heart Feast Of Christ The King. Month Of June
(Month Of The Sacred Heart)
 Anniversary Of Parent’s Marriage
 Any Day Of Special Significance To Your Family

Basic Principles Of The Enthronement

Jesus Christ Is The King Of Individuals, Families, And Nations: The
Sovereignty Of Jesus Christ. - Jesus Christ Rules As King Through
Love: The Sovereignty Of The Sacred Heart.
This Sovereignty Today Is Almost Universally Scorned And
Despised: His Sovereignty Rejected. - The Enthronement Is An
Excellent Means To Make Reparation For These Insults And To
Restore The Sovereign Rights Of The Sacred Heart: His
Acknowledged And Re-Established Sovereignty. - The Enthronement
Is The Complete Realization Of All The Requests Made By The
Sacred Heart To St. Margaret Mary: His Sovereignty Willed And
Demanded By His Sacred Heart.

Preparation
Before The Ceremony:

1. Understand The Importance Of The Enthronement: Take The

Time To Understand The Significance And Importance Of The
Enthronement Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus Ceremony.

2. Set A Date For The Enthronement: Set A Date For The

Enthronement In Agreement With The Pastor.

3. Preparation Prayers And Scripture Readings For

Enthronement: Recite The Prayers In The Booklet. Three Days
Of Prayer And Scripture Reading Prior To The Enthronement Day
Is Encouraged. Many Options Are Suitable. One Suggestion
Would Be A Decade Of The Rosary Each Day With
Accompanying Scripture For These Mysteries: Birth Of Jesus
(Heart Of Our King), The Finding Of The Boy Jesus In The
Temple (Heart Of Our Brother), And The Resurrection (Heart Of
Our Saviour).

4. Invite A Priest. It Is Desirable To Have A Priest Preside At The

Ceremony, But It Is Not Essential To Gain The Indulgences. For
Serious Reasons, The Father, Or Someone Else May Preside And
Lead The Prayers. In Any Case, Please Consult Your Parish
Priest. The Presence Of A Cleric Will Make This Consecration A
More Solemn Occasion, And The Ceremony Involves Prayers
And A Blessing To Be Said By Him.

The Blessing Of The Image Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus. It Is

Important To Have A Priest Preside At The Ceremony, But When It Is
Impossible To Have Him Present, The Image Can Be Blessed
Beforehand.

Go For Confession

Go To Mass: If Possible Have The Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass

Offered That Morning For The Reign Of The Sacred Heart In Your
Home, And As An Act Of Love And Reparation To The Sacred Heart.
The Entire Family Should Try To Receive Communion At This Mass,
Or At Another Mass.
Prepare The Altar: Prepare The Home For The Enthronement By
Arranging The Holy Water, Preparing A Decorated White Cloth With
Flowers And Candles And Placing The Picture Or Statue On A Small
Table Near The "Throne" Before The Ceremony.
Invite Your Relatives And Friends: Consider Inviting Your Relatives
And Friends To Make It A Special Occasion, As This Can Inspire
Others To Adopt The Same Practice In Their Own Homes And
Contribute To Spreading The Devotion To The Sacred Heart.
Additionally, Organize A Family Party Following The Ceremony.
Print Up The Prayers For The Participants To Follow
Make This Day One Of The Outstanding Events Of The Family Life
---- One Long To Be Remembered. The Greater The Solemnity, The
Better.
Note: Even Though Your Home Has Been Consecrated To The
Sacred Heart, You May Still Have The Enthronement, As The Two
Are Not The Same.

4. Blessing Of The Home. Parents And Children Come Together In

The Main Room At The Specified Time For The Ceremony, And
They Can Invite Relatives And Friends.
5. The Blessing Of The Image Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus. It Is
Important To Have A Priest Preside At The Ceremony, But When It Is
Impossible To Have Him Present, The Image Can Be Blessed
Beforehand.
6. The Enthronement Of The Image. The Head Of The Family Sets
Up The Images Of The Sacred Heart Of Jesus In A Place Of Honor,
In Order To Render Homage To The Reign Of The Love Of Jesus
Christ Always.
7. Prayer Of The Creed. After The Blessing, In Order To Give
Explicit Expression To The Faith Of The Family, All Recite The
Apostles’ Creed Out Loud And Standing.
8. Words Or Message Of Who Presides Over The Enthronement.
Everyone Is Seated While The Priest Addresses A Few Words To
Those Present.
9. The Formula Of Consecration. This Is A Form Approved By St.
Pius X On May 19, 1908 And Is Required As Such To Gain The
Indulgences.
O Sacred Heart Of Jesus, Who Didst Make Known To St. Margaret
Mary Thine Ardent Desire To Reign Over Christian Families, Behold
Us Assembled Here Today To Proclaim Thine Absolute Dominion
Over Our Home.
Henceforth We Purpose To Lead A Life Like Unto Thine So That
Amongst Us May Flourish The Virtues For Which Thou Didst
Promise Peace On Earth, And For This End We Will Banish From
Our Midst The Spirit Of The World Which Thou Dost Abhor So
Much.
Thou Wilt Reign Over Our Understanding By The Simplicity Of Our
Faith. Thou Wilt Reign Over Our Hearts By An Ardent Love For
Thee; And May The Flame Of This Love Be Ever Kept Burning In
Our Hearts By The Frequent Reception Of The Holy Eucharist.
Deign, O Divine Heart, To Preside Over Our Meetings, To Bless Our
Undertakings Both Spiritual And Temporal, To Banish All Worry And
Care, To Sanctify Our Joys And Soothe Our Sorrows. If Any Of Us
Should Ever Have The Misfortune To Grieve Thy Sacred Heart,
Remind Him Of Thy Goodness And Mercy Towards The Repentant
Sinner.
Lastly When The Hour Of Separation Will Sound And Death Will
Plunge Our Home Into Mourning, Then Shall We All And Every One
Of Us Be Resigned To Thy Eternal De¬Crees, And Seek Consolation
In The Thought That We Shall One Day Be Reunited In Heaven,
Where We Shall Sing The Praises And Blessings Of Thy Sacred
Heart For All Eternity.
May The Immaculate Heart Of Mary And The Glorious Patriarch St.
Joseph Offer Thee This Our Consecration And Remind Us Of The
Same All The Days Of Our Life. Glory To The Divine Heart Of
Jesus, Our King And Our Father!
10. Prayer For The Missing And Deceased. Passed Away Family
Members Should Be Called To Mind. Thus Say One Our Father And
One Hail Mary For These, And For Those Who Are Absent And
Missing.
11. Consecration Of Children. While Not An Official Part Of The
Enthronement, The Children May Recite A Poem Or Sing A Hymn In
Honor Of The Sacred Heart. This Is A Short One:
Most Sweet Jesus, Divine Friend Of Children, Receive Our Hearts,
Make Them Pure, Holy And Happy; Receive Also Our Bodies, Our
Souls, And All Our Strength. We Consecrate Ourselves To Thee Now
And Forever. Be Thou Alone Our King. All Our Thoughts, And Our
Words, Our Actions, And Our Prayers, We Consecrate To Thee, Our
Friend And Our King.
12. Final Benediction. The Priest Blesses Those Present And A
Certificate Of Enthronement Can Be Signed By The Priest And The
Family.
