Church Planting Essentials

The document provides an overview of a church planting seminar led by Tim Carte. It discusses that church planting involves starting with God as the mission belongs to Him, not churches or individuals. New Testament church planting results in new disciples who voluntarily join together as a baptized community to fulfill the Great Commission. The essentials for successful church planting are a team, proclaiming the gospel, the Holy Spirit, and receptive people. The seminar includes testimony from Danny Griffin about the importance of prayer, understanding local culture, and caring for people to effectively start new churches.

Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

Introduction to Course
 Matthew 28:18-20
 There is not one single verse in the Bible that commands us to plant churches.

What is Church Planting?

 Often when we come to God’s Word we are tempted to read into it. We always come to
the Bible with presuppositions.
 New Testament church planting is…
o God on a mission through His churches.
 When starting a church we begin with God.
 The clearer our vision of God, the clearer everything else becomes. –
Isaiah 6:1-9.
 The greater the revelation of God we receive, the greater faith we will
exercise in Him.
 When we begin with God we have great vision and we have great faith.
 John 8:58-59 – God is always previous.
 When we start a church, God is already there.
 Ephesians 3:10-11 – God is on a mission.
 We do not work on the basis of a relevant church planting program. We
work on the basis of a relationship to a person; and that person is God. –
Romans 8:28
 When we begin to deal with starting churches, we first begin with God and
do not begin with churches.
 If you begin with churches…
 You exclude God.
 The by-product(s) become the goal.
 Christian’s lose motivation.
o In church planting, you will get discouraged.
 Seeking to fulfill the success of a program.
 You will be tempted to use what works.
 What is the mission?
o Mission is not what the church is doing. Mission is what God is doing.
 God uses means (the church) but it is ultimately God’s mission. Not the
churches.
 I Corinthians 3:6-9
 God gives the increase.
 This means that church planting is not originated from an
individual, an organization, or anything else other than God.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 God is already on a mission, we just come along side of Him as a

means to carry out His mission.
 Nowhere is scripture are we commanded to initiate projects on behalf of
God.
o Our doing of mission does not come out of our planning or strategy, but out of our
being with Christ.
 Acts 1:8 because we ARE witnesses, we CAN witness.
o God has already created the concept of the body. We are not trying to reinvent it.
Church planting is not reinventing anything but being in the reality of what God
has already began.
o Does God expect all of His people to have His mission as a priority? YES. He is
Lord whether we realize it or not.
o People will not have God’s mission at heart unless they worship Him.
 No one goes on mission. People are sent on mission.
o Because of man’s traditions, we disregard the New Testament.
o God’s mission is only through his church. Not parachurch organizations.
o We must do God’s mission. Not just our own ideas.
 What is New Testament Church Planting?
o N.T. Church Planting is evangelism that results in new disciples that self-identify
as a group of baptized believers that have voluntarily joined themselves together
to carry out the great commission.
 What is needed?
o We will find out from Scripture!
 The first thing you must decide is if God has called you to pastor or to be a N.T. Church
Planter.
o One starts a church and stays there to pastor while the other starts churches in
succession.
 New Testament Church Planting is simple but difficult.
 We have a point of reference (the Bible). If we want to move away from that point of
reference then we have no reason to expect God’s blessing.
 The most effective way of evangelism is to plant churches.
 What are the four most essentials needed to plant a church? - I Thessalonians 1:6; 2:1-8,
Acts 16:17
o There was a team – Sowers (Vs. 1)
o The Gospel - Seed (Vs. 2-4)
o The Holy Spirit – Spirit (Ch. 1:6)
o The People – Soil
 If you’re not making disciples, you are not a part of church planting.
 Transplanting is not church planting.
 The example that the apostle Paul was. – I Thess. 2:8
 It’s not your efforts. It’s all about what God is doing.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Hi today is a good day.

Danny Griffin – Testimony

January 23rd, 2017
 “The first thing you look for when you get to a new place is a man of peace. A man of
peace is not a believer but he is a sympathetic to the gospel.”
 Work with who you got even if they don’t line up completely with what you believe.
 Don’t try to straighten everybody out immediately.
 Be a man. Stand up for what you believe (told a story about his dad knocking a guy out
because they were going to run him out of town. “Knocked him out colder than a polar
bear’s kiss.”)
 Use who God gives you to work with.
 How can we start churches?
o Boldness - Courage
o Discernment – Knowing who to witness to and knowing when to witness
o You need both. You need to pray for both.
 A strategic way to start churches
o The first thing you do is pray.
 Much people need to pray.
o You need to survey the area to familiarize yourself with the area.
 Observe the town.
 Observe the culture.
 Observe the religious state of the place.
 Observe the people.
 Believers that are already there are a big help.
 You cannot go somewhere expecting the locals to have the same background and
understanding as you.
 Take people where they are at and not where we want them to be.
 Use the culture as a means to present the gospel. Don’t allow it to become a wall that
blocks the gospel.
 If you are a church planter and not a pastor than you are a contractor, not a maintenance
man. If you are called to plant and then pastor a church then you are both the contractor
and the maintenance man.
 Use the culture to benefit your efforts.
 You have to see where God is working and jump in on it.
 Observe what is close to the heart for the group of people you are reaching. I.E. If it is
music, present the gospel through music and etc. But never neglect the preaching of the
Word.
 A good thing is to knock on doors and just tell people that you are praying for them and
ask them how you can pray for them. This shows the people that you care for them and
will open doors of possibility.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 You got to pray the Devil out of the area.

 Most people will not receive anything until they know that you care about them.
 When you plant something, the natural thing for it to do is grow.

Why is Ecclesiology Important When Planting a Church?

January 25th, 2017

1 Our doctrine of the church affects everything we do within the church.

 Who are members, who are pastors.
 A church is a group of baptized believers who have voluntarily joined themselves together to
carry out the great commision.
 A church comes into existence when people repent of their sin, place their faith in Jesus, are
baptized, and agree to join theirselves together in the church.
 We know this is a church because they self-identify themselves as a church.
 This is very simplistic. A group of people is not always large.
 All other elements of a church are essential but these are the things that a new church grows
toward as soon as possible.
 A church is saved, baptized, and they self-identify as a church. (ecclesia)

2 A BIblical understanding of the family of God and the local church is necessary.
 There is no such thing as "The Universal Church".
 It is imporatant for church planters to know that there is no universal church because...
 It is impossible to carry out total obedience to Jesus Christ without a commitment to a
local body of Christ.
 It is vital that the church planting team commit to local churches.
 We have to know that the N.T. does NOT teach that there is a universal church.
3 Commitment to Jesus, baptism, and self-identification as Christians, are essential for a local
church to be birthed.
 The church is not a continuation of Israel.
 The church is not synonymous with Israel.
 REFER to document - "Ecclesiology For Church Planters"

Kendal Wadley - Conference Call

February 6th, 2017
Isaiah 6:1-8 - You need a clear vision of the Saviour
1 The first principle of church planting is a vision of God.
 You need to see the Lord high and lifted up. You will not be able to see the details but
you can see the Lord high and lifted up.
 No man can decide for you. YOu ust first see the LOrd high and lifted up.
2 Then you have to see yourself.
 YOu cannot think that you have arrived. YOu have to submit to the Lord. WIthout
God, you can do nothing.
 Learn to see yourself - "woe i me!" YOu will never say "woe is me" until you say
"HOly is He!"
3 Then you see the world.

Revelation 3:1-2 - We need a vision of strengthening

 Acts 16:9 -
 Some church planting is simply just strengthening churches.
 Churches need strengthened before they can plant other churches.

Romans 15:20 - Vision of starting

 Paul's desire was to start new churches.
 Pioneering work
o I Samuel 17
o Jonah
o Acts 16
 Persistent work
o Acts 20:26
 Perilous work
o Acts 15:26
 Producing work
o I Corinthians 7:15

QUESTIONS:
 What are the pros and cons of planting churches rather than having a team?
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o If you have a team, than it would be better. THere will never be a point where you have too
many helpers.
o Use what God gives you.
 Be patient. The church will take time to grow normally.
 It's not about location, it's about following the Lord.
 If you do not feel led in any specific area, start praying and searching for places that have never
been evangelized.

The Lostness of North America (Video)

February 8th, 2017
 9 of the 10 least reached states are in the Northeast, The least reached state is Utah.
 The U.S. is in the top three unevangelized countries in the world.
 There are pockets of lost people groups, even in the "Bible Belt".
 There is a need here.
 One of the most vital things in church planting is a TEAM.
 Why plant churches in teams?
1 It is the only New Testament model you find.
 There was never a lone ranger.
 There were connections and partners.
2 One person can not do it.
 Acts 13:1-2 - The Spirit called BOTH Paul and Barnabas.
 Mark 10:1
 You never find Jesus or the Spirit sending out individuals.
3 You must stay vibrant in body life relationships yourself.
 I Corinthians
 A team can model BIblical relationships to others.
4 You need to stay on task and thriving.
 II Corinthians 4:8, 9
 It is not the easiest thing in the world to plant a church.
 A team helps with encouragement among eachother and accountability.

HOW TO FORM A TEAM

1 Allow God to grow you personally.
 It starts with you.
 You must determine that you are going to grow.
 You will not attract those higher than you.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 The more mature you are, then you will not attract or influence people higher than
you. You will only attract those under you.
2 You must maintain a devotion with God - Luke 5:16; 2:52
 Jesus was always looking to God the Father.
 Personal time alone with God is difficult to fake.
 The private life of a leader will influence the public life in front of others.
 Sooner or later, what you really are will come out.
 It's hard to be a spiritual leader when you are not spending tme with God.
3 You have to be disciplined to spend time along with God. - Luke 6:12, 13
 Before Jesus ever began to form a team, He spent time alone with God.
 Christian leadership is not like the world's leadership. Pastors must be leaders but not
all leaders are pastors.
 Leadership and management are two of the biggest words to know.
 The practical things of learning to manage.

February 15th, 2017

4 Work to put a team together
 Jeus enlisted people
 Jesus called a small group out of a larger group - Luke 6:12-16
 Jesus intentionally directed them to be a part of a group.
 You must pray and then personally get to know people.
 Make a list of possible team members and begin to approach them prayerfully.
 When speaking to them, plan what are going to say.
 Don't have a second choice. (backup plan)
 Be up front about everything. Give as much detail as possible.
 Jesus formed a team. Paul worked with a team. Forming a team is biblical.

 Eight Characteristics of a church planting team member from the life of

Barnabas:
 Get to know their parent's spiritual life. God will help you to choose because children
reflecct their parents.
 Churches relfect leadership.
1 He walks with God
 A true work for God comes from a heart that worships God.
 Acts 15:25; 11:23, 30
 Here is a person who walked with GOd
 YOu will never know this until you spend time with people.
2 Maintains an outstanding character
 Acts 11:24
 Leadership is built on confidence and your ability.
 IN the first year of tarting a church, you need to lay a good foundation.
 If you aren't a person of integrity, your ministry will implode.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

3 Serves the local church

 Acts 4; 11:22
 Teams will produce what they know and experience.
 If the team longs to see new believers become fruit bearing disciples in a local
chruch, then the team members must be committed themselves.
 You will reproduce what you are and not what you want.
 Pastors reproduce what they are and not what they want.
4 Remains faithful to the call.
 You aren't going to have a lot of ordinary people on your team. Weird people
get things done.
 This is a spiritual thing and not a physical.
 Acts 2;4;13
 This isnt a job for a novice.
5 Shares the gospel regularly
 I Corinthians 9:2
 Barnabas' evangelism is characterized by...
 Acts 13 - Intentional evangelism
 Acts 14:36 - Bold
 Acts 14:6-7 - continued in the face of persecution
 Intentional, regular evangelism is one non-negotionable practice of church planting
teams.
 You do not want someone in authority who is not out trying to share the gospel.
 The first question on your mind at all times with all people is, "is this person saved?"
 Raises up leaders
 You want a leader of leaders.
 Took a chance with Paul - Acts 9
 Took a chance with John-Mark - Acts 13:13
 Encourages with speech and aciton
 Acts 4:36 - CAlled the son of encouragement
 Acts 9:27 - COnvinced the church that Paul was a believer.
 Encouragement is key in church planting teams.
 Look for things to encourage eachother about.
 Attitude is so important.
 Responds appropriately to conflict
 Acts 15:36-41
 Galatians 2:13
 These conflicts did not severe friendships and relationships
 II Timothy 4:11
 Work and grow personally then you work and grow a team.
 Work on your leadership and work on your management.

5 Equip your team
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Enlist, equip, train, and continue.

6 Extend your ministry by letting your influence spread.
 Four Stages of Team Development:
1 Forming
 Beginning a team life
 Expectations are unclear
 Members test the water
 Interactions are superficial
2 Storming
 Conflict and resistance.
 The team is struggling through it's differences.
i When praying initially about forming your team
 Five major areas of conflict:
i Character problems
ii Chronic lateness
iii Gifting fit/Special talents they have from God
iv Authority Issues
 Mutual faith, mutual love, mutual respect, mutual submission.

Pastor Timothy Knipp - Video Call

February 13th, 2017

 There is a difference between a burden and a call to a place.
o God can use the feeling of "I don't want to leave"
o The difference between a burden and a call is that when you realize that there is
gospel work going on in that area, the burden will ease but the call will never change.
 Ethics
o Be ethically right with other pastors in the area.
o Become familiar with other churches in the area.
o Call the churches before you ever go to that area.
o The goal is not to steal people from other churches. The goal is to reach the lost.
o You MUST be the ethical example to others.
o Often in church planting, the only friends in the world that new converts will have is
you and your wife.
 You have to be willing to talk about standards.
 Service
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o We have to learn to be the leaders, but you are also the janitor.
o If something needs done in the church, then you need to do it.
o When starting a church, if you want to start a ministry, then you run it.
o You have to understand that every ministry you start that you help start it.
o Your ministry is not just in the pulpit. You have to be a servant as well.
o Be willing to serve and do everything neccessary to do the work.
 Knowing your area
o Learn the language of the local and how they say things. (i.e. "Lang-caster" vs
"Langcaster"
o We live in a culturally diverse country.
o When you know that God is calling you somewhere, learn the area. By learning the
area, you are learning the people.
 Be willing to have a pioneering spirit.
o Be willing to just work at it despite what people say.
o You do not have to go through a church planting organization to start a church. You
do not even need a church to start another church.
o When you go to start a church you will often be asked, "how's it going?"
o When everyone else says "no" and God says "yes. go." you have to stay with God.
o You will opposition from other churches and preachers about not running enough
members.
o Numbers are NEVER the goal.
 When you know God's calling on your life, there is no other options.
 When you plant a church in the area, buy a home and get settled
o People in the area will be happy to speak with youu when you can tell them you live
near them and your family is plugged into the area.
 It will often be harderr for your wife than it is for you.
 Every meeting within a 2 hour radius of churches, you need to go to. This is for your
wife. Not for you.
o Every time you go to another meeting like that, your wife will leave encouraged.
 If you lose your family, then you have lost your whole ministry.
 When you go to an area to start a church, remember that your family is with you and that
they are more important than knocking doors.
o Do not negglect your family for the sake of ministry.
 Finances
o FInances are difficult to deal with when starting a church.
o WHen you start a church, you have to count the offering.
o GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to make sure there is accountability.
o When you start a church, open a bank account in the area.
o Begin tithing and giving to the church you are starting.
o Think ahead.
o When starting a church, YOU may have to take care of the initial bills.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o After a year or two that a member has been in the church, allow them to help out with
finances so you can slowly transition them into the finance department.
o YOur church needs to be invested in worldwide missions as soon as possible.
 Saturation church planting is the most effective church planting.
 Paul said he went to where the gospel isnt named.
 Contact details: Email - Cell Number - 7409744033

 We must show and present things that are easily reproducible. If it is not reroducible, then it is
not New Testament.

The Pathway to Church Planting

February 20th, 2017
Acts 13:1-2 - Sent to do a work
Acts 14:26 - WOrk is fulfilled
Acts 14:21-23 - God wnats the reproduction and multiplication of His church to be done in a
certain way.
1 Preached the gospel to that city
2 Taught many
3 COnfirming the souls of the disciples
4 Exhorting them to continue in the faith
5 Ordained them elders in every church
6 Commended them to the Lord.

ACts 13
1 Christ and Holy SPirit
2 Paul and Barnabas
a WHere did these church planters come from? The HOly SPirit sent them.
3 Evangelism
a WHere did evangelism come from? Paul and Barnabas (church planters)
4 DIsciples
a WHere did the disciples come from? From evangelism.
5 Church
a WHere did the church come from?
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

b They came from the disciples.

6 Pastor
a Where did these pastors come from?
i They came from within that church.
ii There was never an emphasis on a pastor in the Bible until there was a church.
iii I Timothy 3:6 - Not a novice
b Paul did not stay in a place for very long but they pulled pastors out of these
churches.

 Do not allow culture to "taint" the Word of God.

o We have to be careful about allowing our culture and our cultural expectations to get
in the way.
 The pastor came AFTER the church was planted and came from within that church.
 "Novice" in I Tim. 3 means "newly planted". A pastor must not be a babe in Christ.
 You cannot put a timetable on when to have a pastor come out. But you can make it
happen faster than you may expect. It can happen quickly.

The actual work in church planting:

1 Gospel shared
2 Disciples are made
3 Small groups are start
a Acts 14
b THere has to be this training time
4 The church is planted
5 Elders are appointed

 Where does all this come from? It all comes from the harvest.
o The church, the pastor, the deacons, the funds, helpers, etc, all comes from the
harvest.

The lists above gives us the stages of planting.

 We are taking the pathway of N.T. church planting and developing stages so we can
effectively plant churches.
 We lay out these stages so that everyone on the team and be on the same page.
 The team isn't planting to stay in the same stage forever.
o You should move from stage to stage
o You do not start with strategy. You start with God.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

The stages of church planting:

1 The pre-entry stage
 Involves everything the team does before arriving on the field.
 The question: "WHat do we need to take care of before we arrive on the field and
how do we need to do it?"
i Before you arrive, you know that God has given a pathway.
ii Write down everything a team has to do before arriving on the field.
 The keys:
i Develop as a team
ii Study the culture and context of where you are going.
iii Have conversations with others.
iv Learn the language and terms
v Make "vision" trips to the field.
vi FInd a place to live
vii May want to secure a place of employment.
viii WHat are some specific needs you see in that ccity?
 N.T. church planter has a team and goes on and goes on. DOes not stay to pastor.
2 The Entry Stage
 Involves everything that the team does when they arrive orinitiate when they arrive
on the field.
 The quesition: "How do we enter this field as outsiders?"
i Sometimes the way you dress will be a hinderance.
ii You may have to change some personal preferences in order to reach the people.
iii JUst don't budge on biblical standards but be felxible on personal opinion and
preference.
iv REmove the fence
 The keys:
i Connect with neighbours
 You should be able to find favour with the lost so they trust you.
 They should know that you have a concern and care for them and not a hatred
for them.
ii Learning where they shop
iii Knowing the local hangouts.
iv Gaining more understanding about the cultural context.
v We should be sharing the gospel and developing an intentional evangelistic
lifestyle as best we can.
vi Consider what passions, talents, skills, and interest that you have in common with
people in the community so that you can engage them.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

SPorts
Outdoor activities
3 The Gospel Stage
 The gospel stage involves everything the team does related to sharing the gospel.
 The question: "How do you connect with people and call them to repentance and faith
in Jesus alone?"
i Don't close the door with people. ALways find a way to keep a door open with
people.
ii It may require some patience.
iii It may require more work on your end.
 Keys:
i Be quick to share the gospel with others
 Everyone should know that you are a Christian and why you are there as quick
as you can
ii Know that the Holy Spirit is working and He will use writen material, technology,
etc.
iii Be intentional about praying for the work of the Spirit as you go.
 Go out and pray with the Holy Spirit guiding you - "prayer walks"
iv The gospel should be widely dissimulated among the community
 Mass evangelism
v Learn the Spirit-led aproach to people with gospel intent.
 If you are doing something dumb, you will lose respect in the city and lose
doors to present the gospel.
vi GIving the gospel
 Let people know as quick as possible that you are a Christian and what you
are doing there
 Ask if there is anything you can pray with something about
 Ask if they would be interested in studying the Bible in their home
 You do not have enough time to reach and teach everybody. Try to bring people into
groups so you can save time.
 Leadership development begins
i Some of your first converts will eventually become the church leaders.
ii You should begin developing leaders as soon as possible.

March 1st, 2017

4 The Discipleship Stage

 Church planting is all about working yourself out of a job for someone to take your place.
 Enlist people, train them, equip them, and then they can continue.
 What is discipleship?
i A disciple is a believer who identifies with Christ. One command in the Great
Commission is to make disciples.
ii Discipleship involves teaching them to “observe all things” whatsoever Christ has
commanded.
 The question: What do the people need?
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Bring people to Jesus and let Him guide them.

 Teach a disciple how to read his Bible, explain to him everything about the Bible. Teach him
to pray after the pattern found in the Bible. Teach him to witness.
 Keys:
i Short term – encouragement, inspiration
ii Long term – Sunday school class, etc.
 Leadership development continues
5 The Church Stage
 This involves new believers to self-identify and covenant together as a local church.
 The question: Who is ready to start the church?
 Believers must know who the church is.
i You must explain to them who the church is.
 Believers must know when do we meet.
 Believers must know why do we meet.
 Believers must know what do we do.
 Theology – Missiology – Ecclesiology
i God has a mission and His mission is through His church.
 Leadership development continues
6 Leadership Development
 It must begin in the gospel stage.
 The question: Who is God leading to be a leader?
 Keys:
o Is there evidence there?
 Do they take initiative?
 Are they faithful men?
 They may have a leadership role in the secular world?
 Availability
 Are they teachable?
 Look for F.A.T. people – Faithful people, Available people, and Teachable
people.
o Do they have a level of spiritual maturity?
 How to test someone’s spiritual maturity – When you are corrected.
 If he does not accept correction then he has no spiritual maturity.
o Have they led a soul to Christ and help them be baptized and helped them grow
spiritually?

Phase-Out Strategy
o It must be implemented at the first. The team must begin with this end in mind.
 Keys for understanding the stages of New Testament Church Planting
o Knowing the big picture is helpful for developing the strategy
 Three different kinds of men: “Laying block”, “building a wall”, or “building a
temple”.
 Keep the BIG PICTURE in mind.
o The stages overlap at time-they are not mutually exclusive.
o The leadership stage runs parallel to the gospel, discipleship and church stages.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o The stages emphasize both reaching and teaching new believers.

o Phase-out forces the team to begin with its end in mind.
o The team should think of themselves as a scaffold – a temporary, supportive structure.
o

Planned Role Changes During the Church Planting Process

Learner – Explorer - Evangelist – Teacher - Developer - Mentor/Partner

 Key Ideas
o As the team moves from stage to stage, their responsibilities and activities change.
o Team role changes are necessary as the new disciples move through the
sanctification process.
o The team should only progress to the next role as the Holy Spirit allows.

I. Learner
A. Learning all about themselves as a team and about the people they wills erve.
1. Before the team arrives and after they arrive.
2. Team formation and development
3. Understanding the context
4. Understanding language and culture
5. Strategy development
6. Vision trips to the field
B. Primary role for team is to learn as much as they can as the Lord prepares them
for the field.
II. Explorer
A. The team enters into the community where they will be working and living
1. Observe the people
2. Observe the market place
3. Observe public transportation
4. Observe the way of life
a. They are not learning via book or computer but from firsthand
information about how to live and minister among the people.
B. Keys
1. Discard your normal routine
a. Treat yourself as an explorer
2. Surveying the community for needs that can be met by the team.
3. Exploring has to be purposeful.
III. Evangelist
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

A. The team does the work of evangelism

1. One of the common characteristics among church-planting
movements is that their origins can be traced to a widespread
dissemination of the good news.
B. Spend a great deal of time in evangelism
1. Three keys to apostolic evangelism
a. Exposing of many to the gospel in order to find the few who are
spiritually responsive
1) The Lord is stirring hearts of some in the particular city
where I am labouring.
2) Over sowing is both a natural and spiritual principle.
i. Although an oak tree drops many acorns, only a few
saplings grow up.
3) Provides effective ministry for those who may not be
“gifted” personal evangelist.
IV. Teacher
A. The team is involved in teaching new converts what to believer (doctrine) and
how to follow (obedience) – get people to Jesus and let Jesus teach them where to
go.
B. Keys (what they need to understand)
1. The gospel the new believers have received
2. Their new nature and what it means to be a disciple
3. The power of the Spirit in them
4. Assurance of salvation
5. God’s Word and how to study it
6. Prayer and fasting
7. The hope of heaven and abundant life
8. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
9. The nature and function of the church
10. Kingdom stewardship related to everything in our possession
11. Disciple making and ministry (local and global)
March 8th, 2017

C. DIstinguish between long term and short temr discipleship.

1. Short term discipleship is what is needed of the first three months.
a. REpentance and faith
b. Baptism
c. Love (service, fellowship and worship)
d. The Lord's Supper
e. Giving
f. Prayer
g. The Great Commission
h. You cannot teach them what you are not doing it
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

i. As a child grows, he stops desiring the happy meeal and starts

desiring the meat - The same is in discipleship, as they grow, they
desire more meat and less milk.
2. Long term discipleship (Go through books of the Bible)
a. Small groups
b. They need to start digging deeper into the whole counsel of God.
c. HOw to study the BIble
1) Teach a man how to fish, and he can eat for the rest of his
life. Give a man a fish, he will only eat for one day.
d. How to rest in the Spirit.
e. HOw to hold one another accountable and live in community.

1) None of the biblical teachings and practices are meant to be lived out in
isolation. A person cannot be a faithful follower of Jesus apart from the
local body of Christ.
a. New Testament evangelism is local church evangelism.
2) Strategy always includes a designated date when the new believers are
challenged to self-identify as a local church.
a. Christianity today has turned ourselves into the object of devotional
life, discipleship, ministry, etc. We (people) have become the object of
Christianity when Christ is to be the object of Christianity.
b. We need GOd's power to carry out HIs plan. ANd in order to have
GOd's power, you have to get rid of yourself.
c. YOu have to have a plan.
d. BOOK: "Transformational discipleship"

V. Developer
A. Works with the new church to appoint leadership and pastor.
B. Keys:
1. Biblical qualifications (I Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 5:1-9; I Peter 5:1-4)
2. The Holy Spirit will show everyone
3. You must look for and receive counsel from others
a. This is a group thing now.
VI. Mentor/Partner
A. The team transitions from being engaged in the pastoral aspects of the ministry to
mentoring and equiping the new pastor that came from the church.
B. Keys:
1. SPend less time with the church and more time with the leader.
2. Eventually the team will be physically bsent from the church, but
they will remaian in partnership with the church and its leaders.
3.

Pastor Steve Kilpatrick - Video Call

February 22nd, 2017
 Churches start churches
o Churches help churches.
 "Missionary church planter" - Perpetual church planting. Not starting a church to pastor it.

Some qualifications of a church planter:

1 He must meet the biblical standards
2 He must know that it is God's will
3 He and his family must have a walk with God.
 Raise support. You will be 5 years ahead if you raise support.
 THis will free time for the pastor to knock doors.
4 He must be willing to be a leader
 ANd have courage.
 Leadership influences everything.
 If you are leading, people will follow you.
 Don't be afraid of what needs to be said on the pulpit.
 Don't be afraid to lead in the area of doctrine (church doctrine as well)
5 He must understand and be prepared to sacrifice financially.
 If you are dilligent in raising support, then there will not be much financial sacrifice.
 "It is your fault if you have to live on beans and weanies because you did not raise support"
 In the beginning, everything is paid out of your pocket.
 If you do not raise support, you will have to sacrifice financially.
6 He must be willing to never give up.
 YOu do not go somewhere to fail.
 You must have the attitude that you did not come to fail.
 50% of church plants "fail" in the first two years.
 God does not call you to a place to fail.
7 He must know how to organize a local church properly and put men to work.
 You have to view yourself sort of like a coach
 II TIm. 2:2
 You are ALWAYS training people. The training never ends.
 You plant the seeds of success or failure in the beginning of planting a church
 You reproduce what you are, not necessarily what you want it to be.
 Inspiration without education leads to frustration.
8 He must be a soulwinner
 You are a soulwinner all the time. Not just on designated, organized invitation.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 You are the leader and it will be hard to get people to do what you are not doing.
9 He must spend time in followup discipleship
 You have to do follow-up and discipleship. Everyone you lead to the LOrd will not know
what to do after they get saved.
10 He must be a preacher and a teacher of the Word of God
 There is a difference between teaching and preaching
 Preaching calls for a response and teaching does not.
 Never stop teaching and preaching
11 He must have skills to develop a pastor's heart
 A pastor's heart may already be in you but it needs to be developed.
12 He must know how to communicate with people
 Not just from the pulpit.
 Everything you do as a pastor communicates something.
 Learn how to keep your emotions from getting in the way of talking to people.
13 He must have administrative skills and be willing to learn and listen to godly instruction.
 Bible college did not teach you everything.
 You are always in the learning stage

 Advice from Aaron Pack

o Persistence. Never give up, press on through discouragements and struggles.

March 6th, 2017
Acts 13
 God has a no-fail plan in church planting.
o Matthew 28
o There is an individual call. There is a geographical call.

o YOu ought to be at the place where you say, "GOd, i will go anywhere and do
anything"
o Be involved in everything you can. Get what you can and can what you get.
 Get engaged in the ministry.
o GOd is a God of order and church planting should be done without confusion.

o Pray, "LOrd, show me how" and He will tell you to obey HIs plan.
 YOu should study God's plan - take no word for granted.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o Don't ever get tired of His plan.

o TIme management is lacking in today's ministry.

o Be a man of the book

 STudy, give it to others.

o The first part of this no-fail plan of GOd's is "GO"
o As you are going, teach all nations.

o Become very familiar with the great comission. Study it and study it more.
o YOu cannot go everywhere.

o Twice the word "teach" or "teaching" occurs in this plan.

o It is not good enough just to teach them. YOu must teach them to observe ALL things
that the Lord commanded.
o GOd plan is no-fail - the problem is that we are not obeying His plan.

o God's plan is to witness as you go. It is not to be limimted by organized soul-winning.

o ALways have tracts on you and engage people.

o ENgage people like CHrist did, with questions.

 The JW'S are good at drawing people in with "positive" errors. We should be able
to draw people with the truth.
o Verse 20 must be followed as well. WE must not stop at salvation and baptism, we
must teach them to observe ALL things that CHrist has commanded.
 Because of this, we must know everything that He commanded.
 Perhaps the reason we do not teach people to observe all things that the Lord
commanded is because we do not know everything that the Lord commanded.
o The thousands of things that we do daily that are sin, we fail to call sin.

 II TImothy 2:2
o ASk someone if they are going to be faithful, if they are not going to be faithful tben
don't meet with them.
 THe Bible interprets itself.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

Jeff Jones - Church Planting Project Management

March 13th, 2017
Luke 14:28-33
 The purpose of project mannagement is so that you can finish what you started
o AVerage pastor pastor lasts 6 months.

o Average missionary is on the field for three years

 Many ministers fail because of a lack of planning.

 If you have not planned to finish then you will not finish.
 Project phases for CHurch Planting
 A project has life-cycle stages. (Project Process Groups)
 Every principle can be applied to every project phase.
 The most important thing you can do in the initiation phase is to identify what that project
is.
o It is very important to be specific.

 Planning is taking what you ahve defined and saying, "how am I going to accomplish
what I am executing."
o Do not confuse the planning stage with the initiation phase.

 Executing is getting the planned work accomplished on time and on budget.

 Montoring and COntrolling is knowing that the work is being done properly.
 CLosing is closing the project and documenting what youfailed at and that you are
closing the project.
 Transitioning phases need to be defined and determined on how they are going to
transition to the next phase.
 Ten Project Management Knowledge Areas
o Project INtegration - seeing the whole picture and putting it all together
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 It covers all five process groups.

 YOu come out with your project charter (mission statement) - the "why"
o Project Scope - is it the work required and only the work required to complete the
project
 Scope brings your target into view and blocks out everything else
 Work in scope is a noun and not a verb.
 When you come out of requirements you should always come out with
requirements that are in line with your mission statement.
o Project Time - how long will it take to complete the necessary work.

 You are looking of specific tasks.

 Begin thinking is verbs.
 LIst what needs to be done and put it on a timeline.
o Project Cost - how much does each tasks cost and how much the overall project costs
 You are a steward
 Plan for every expense
 FInd out how much money everything will costs.
o When you add scope, cost, and time together you get triple constraint.

o Project Quality - how do we know when the job is complete and has been done
properly
 QUality is not the same as grade. QUality is how do we know the finish product
has met the requirements?
o Project Communication - who what, when, where, why, and how is everything in
your project being communicated
 WHen you are promoting always answer those five questions.
 The most important part of communicating is communicating to the most
important people.
 The more important a communication is, put it in writing.
o Project Human Resources - Enlisting, training, equipping you team to get the job
done.
 Learn to delegate.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 It is a team in the church plant.

 WHen you don't show up, does the work still happen?
 If I am not here, what will happen?
o Project Risk - What are the things that could go wrong that we need to mitigate and
what could go right that we need to captialize on
 THink about how you are going to react and behave.
 If you go to a foreign country, learn the laws and the risks.
 DOn't just think of what could go wrong, think about the opportunities.
o Project Procurement - how are we going to get the the supplies we need to complete
the project?
 How are you going to get the resources you need to reach the people?
 Think, think, think about everything.
o Project Stakeholders - identify who is impacted by this prject, their level of
involvement/power over the project, and how to keep them informed and involved in
the project
 Think who is going to be impacted by your ministry.
 Think about who could shut down your ministry.
 Your biggest enemy could be another preacher or pastor.
 Communicate with your stakeholders.
 Don't be naive.
 Plan the work, then work the plan.
 Paralysis by analysis - Don't spend all your time planning and never doing. Put it into
action.
 Think through it and develop a plan and hold yourself accountable.
 Only plan as far as you know - Always come back and plan more for the future. "Rolling
Wave Planning" You can only get so far with your planning.
 Plan long enough until you are "comfortable" to accomplish the work.
 Ultimately, you have to step out by faith.
 When you are thinking about the overal process, plan, do, check, act.
o Plan it, do it, check it and if there is something not going right then act on it.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 The number one danger in project management is change. DOn't let change happen and
not account for it. It is okay to let change come in but you want to account for it.

Jeff Jones - Indiana Church Planter

March 15th, 2017

 Luke 4:43
 The people you expect to help you often don't and the people you don't expect to help you
actually do.
 The church does not belong to you, it belongs to God.
 Resources:
o Use experienced men and pick their brain but be careful about listening to every word
they say to do.

Pastor Gregg Boyle

The Church Planter's Family
March 22nd, 2017
 By yourself, you may second guess yourself. Ask God to give you as much peace about
leaving as He did for you to go to a place.
 Your wife should only be second to the Lord.
 Put the right effort into your family.
o You can get another church, you cannot just "get" another family.

 Ephesians 5:18-28
o Being filled with the Spirit affects your attitude.

 Some pastors do nothing but complain about the ministry.

o Being filled with the Spirit affects your gratitude
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

o Being filled with the Spirit affects your servitude.

 We should love our wives as Christ loved the church

 Christ gave up everything He had for the church - Philippians 2:1-9
 Think about how much patience and enduring He put up with with you, apply
that to your relationship as your wife.
 We should love our wives as our own bodies.
 Your wife needs time alone with God for soul nurishment.
 You may need to watch the kids, etc. to allow your wife to get alone with
God.
 Your wife married you, not the ministry.
 Give your wife the time/attention she needs.
 Your wife is not your assistant pastor - make that clear!
o Your wife will not and is not necessarily supposed to know everything that you as a
pastor knows.
 Be careful about what you wife is able and capable to do.
 Your wife is not a hired servant.
 You need to gaurd your words.
o Ephesians 4:29
o Corrupt communication is words that tear down, not necessarily swearing words.

o Be careful about emotional abbuse.

o Cherish and nourish your wife.

o Our words either edify (build up) or corrupt (tear down)

o You cannot eencourage and edify the church and neglect to edify your family.

 Your wife is your wife. Not your partner in the ministry.

 Keep dating your wife.
o It doesnt have to be fancy, just spend time with her.

 Do your best to involve your kids in the minstry and make it fun for them.
 YOur kids will think it is fun if you act like it is fun.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Do your best to be positive about whatever is going on. Have fun with your family.
 If your family sees that you are miserable, they will be miserable as well.
 Your children did not sign up for the ministry. Do your best to protect them from the
harshness of the ministry.
 Do the best you can not to bring the problems of the ministry home with you. Have a
dumpsite for your problems before you get home.
 We called GOd our "Heavenly Father". YOu are setting the example of what a father is in
their mind. If you are angry, they will see God the Father as angry and etc.
 KEEP YOUR WORD.
o Whether it is positive or negative, keep your word with your family.

 Give your family what they want most; time with you.
 God will speak to you through His Word about calling you to a place. God can talk to
you through His Word.
 WHen you begin seeking God's will, He will speak to you in His Word.
 Your first place to seek God's calling is in the Bible. Don't search for a verse, let God
speak to you.
 Find God's will in God's Word.
 EMail: [email protected]

Developing A Strategy
March 27th, 2017
 WHat is the difference between planning and strategy?
o Planning comes after strategy.

 Strategy is the most important aspect of church planting.

 Strategy asnwers the "why" of church planting and planning answers all other questions.
 Strategy is a lot more broad than planning.
 Startegy deals with stewardship.
o STewardship is your response to GOd.
1 The team must determine to be faithful - John 15:5
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 You do not begin with strategy, you begin with God. Then you go to strategy and
then you plan.
 Faithfulness must be part of your strategy.
 Sometimes we use spiritual excuses for not getting the job done.
 Strategy stops laziness and mediocreness.
 GOd expects us to use wisdom, discernment, and knowledge.
 If you do not have BIble verse for what you are doing, then you do not have a reason
for what you are doing.
 God always confirms His will with His Word.
2 To begin without a strategy is to plan for failure.
 If you do not know why you are there, then you are sure to fail.
 Expect opposition to come.
i The door of opportunity swings on the hinges of opposition.
 The strategy ("why") must come from God.
3 If there is no strategy than there is no accountability. If there is no plan, there is no
accountability.
 You must know why you are doing what you are doing.
 Your strategy must come from God.
 No strategy will contaminate the team with false ideas.
 Isaiah and Jeremiah were not N.T. church planters. You WILL see fruit if it is God's
will.
 See the big picture to see why you are doing what you are doing and how it affects
the whole.
 Increase is given by God. Without Him you can do nothing.
4 Straegy is a matter of stewardship.
 Stewardship of treasure, time, and talent.
 It will take money to get done what God wants to get done.
i You usually start and end with no money.
 Time - you will spend or invest your life into something. Church planting takes time
out of your life. So you better know for sure that it is God's will for your life.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Talent and ability is why it is so important to have a church planting team because
there is a diverse amount of talent and ability that GOd can use.
5 How do you develop this strategy (the "why")?
 Your "why" must come from God.
 Some of the greatest church planters have never started a church themselves.
 How is this strategy developed?
1 A strategy must be prayerfully discerned.
 Isaiah 55:8-9
 Proverbs 16:9
i Lean not unto thine own understanding - Let God direct your steps.
 Proverbs 26:12 - own "conceit" is your own opinion.
 A key: God's timing is more important than time. The key is patience.
PAtience is that pause between asking and receiving.
i If God has not spoken to you than stay where you are. Keep asking and be
patience for His leading.
 Every great movement of God can be traced to a kneeling figure - D.L.
Moody.
 You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you can never do more
than pray until you have prayed - A.J. Gordon.
2 A strategy must be formed by fasting
 As you fast, you really are just giving yourself wholly to Him.
 Be serious about it.
 This is your life, you need to be in tune with heaven.
3 A strategy must be guided by the Holy Spirit.
 This is a supernatural endeavor.
 We should have a burden for everyone and everywhere but a call is very
specific.
 God's timing is more important than time.
 I Corinthians 2:11
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 The Spirit is actively at work in the world and indwells ALL believers - I
Corinthians 6:19
i You don't show up to start a work of God, you show up to get in on what
God is already doing there.
 The Spirit led Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch - Acts 8:29
 You do not begin with a need. The need is everywhere.
 The Spirit led Paul and Silas to Philipi - Acts 16:6-12
 The Spirit must not be grieve (EPh. 4:30) or quenched (I Thess. 5:19)
4 A strategy must be seen as an ongoing process.
 Oftentimes, God will BRING your team to you.
 Be led by the Spirit.
 Think through the steps the team needs to take in order to move from phase to
phase. It is a process.
 Implementation must be in His power and strength.
 The strategy must not be limited to the "board room", it must go with you to
the field.
5 Key questions:
 Are we being wise stewards or the Lord's resources?
 Are we accomplishing what the Lord has given us to do?

Concerns
Rules of Behaviour Based On Bible Principles
March 29th, 2017
1 Poor church planting practices are not only bad methodology; they betray a lack of
integrity and a neglect of moral stewardship.
2 Fight the temptation to accomplish something good in God's work at the expense of
accomplishing something great for God's work
 Err on the side of mercy.
 Take the high road.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Sin is not the reason churches are not being planted, it is our mediocrity.
 In order to fight this temptation, you have to have Bible ethics.
3 Overcome the attitude of leaving Biblically based strategies because of (1) diminishing
resources, (2) people who are resistant toward the gospel and (3) pressures to start a
public worship service or to produce certain numbers.
 Church planting is evangelism that produces disciples.
 If you start a worship service before you are ready, then it is a harder climb.
 Do not rush into having your worship services. Be patient - it may take a couple of
years of work before you have your first service.

Guidelines
(Keep you moving forward)
1 Since the global need for the gospel is so great, your team should begin its ministry
among people with the greatest need and with a high level of receptivity to the gospel
unless God reveals otherwise. (Acts 17:26-27)
 Praying about where to start a church
i God has commanded His churches to make disciples of all peoples - Mark 16:15
ii Find the unengaged and unreached people - Matthew 28:18-20
iii Understand that God is working everywhere
1 Among the receptive people to make a mission field a mission force for His
glory - John 4
2 Among the unreceptive people to make a people for His glory - Acts 15:14
iv Remember that God is already working everywhere.
1 High receptivity and high need - Priority 1
2 Low receptivity and high need - Priority 2
3 High receptivity and low need - Priority 3
4 Low receptivity and low need - Priority 4
v We are to go to every one of these areas but this helps us to pray about where God
wants us.
vi The greatest way to evangelize an area is saturation church planting.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

2 Since there are four billion unbelievers in the world (more or less), of whom two billion
have never even heard the gospel, your strategy should involve the use of highly
reproducible church-planting methods (Acts 13:1-3)
3 Since Biblical church planting is evangelism that results in new churches, your team
should not prioritize transfer growth (moving members from one church to another) over
conversion growth by designing ministries that will primarily see new long-term
members. (Romans 15:20)
4 Since unity among churches in a geographical area is a powerful witness of the gospel,
your team should work to maintain open relationships with any other church planters and
pastors labouring among the same people group as your team. Your team should take the
initiative to meet with them and to share your own ethical guidelines and the definition of
biblical church planting. You should emphasize the fact that your team is not there to
compete with them (John 17:11, 23; 13:35)
5 Since your team's calling is to church planting, and people and location is from God and
is not based on money, your team should not end your ministry in this area just because
this financial support ends. Rather, make appropriate plans (during the pre-entry stage)
for the future of your personal finances when your financial support has an expiration
date.
 Ask these questions:
i What if our funding ends?
ii How will we provide for ourselves and our families in three years?
6 Since a team approach is the biblical model for church planting, and many liabilities
come when working as a solo church planter, it's best to develop your team before the
work begins.
 A solo church planter without a team faces:
i Burnout
ii Discouragement
iii Lack of accountability
iv Intense spiritual warfare
7 Since one of the most critical issues in church planting is the stress it can put on families,
your team should not neglect your families for the sake of church planting but should
begin with a strategy for nurturing family on the field.
 The church planting family sets and example of family life for new believers and
churches. If the family fails, the ministry will fail even harder.
 People look up to you and your family as examples.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Bring your family to preacher's meetings hours away from where you are.
8 The team should not neglect having a devotional life with the Lord or allow themselves
to be distracted by the numerous tasks of ministry.
 The Lord does not need us for His work; He can find someone else if we are
unfaithful to Him.
 Whenever the demands of church-planting tract from the church planters' devotional
life then ethical problems crop up.
 Don't be offended when another church planting comes in to the same area you are.
 These guidelines keep you moving forward.
9 Since church planting involves effective communication of the gospel your team should
work diligently toward "gospel ministry" and not a transfer of church traditions to the
people as norms.
 Do not practice paternalism but rather teach the Spirit led life.
 Do not practice pragmatism but rather teach Bible principles for life and ministry.
10 Your team should report only those numbers and descriptive details that are truly
reflective of what the Holy Spirit is doing in your context. Integrity and accuracy are
important when reporting statistics related to missionary labours. (Ephesians 4:25; I Tim.
1:10: 4:2; Titus 1:12)
April 5th, 2017

Establishing Church Leadership

 Paternalism is one of the biggest mistakes that have taken over in churches today.
 Don't allow tradition to hinder you.
 He commended them to GOd and His Word.
 Paul's confidence was not in the ephesian elders or in the ttraining he gave them, nor did
his faith. Rather, Paul kept his promise to Christ.
 Three things:
o GOd promised to preserve HIs church and keep it blameless

o Paul sent Timothy to spend time with churches - I Timothy 1:3

o Fear of what miht happen can consume you. The only possibility of escaping such
fear is to look to the one who loves the church more than your team does.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 85% of Americans say they like to be seen as Christians but do not love the church.
o 85% of Americans think that CHristianity is all about themselves.

 IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU!

 You have to learn to be a leader of leaders.
Some pratical things to keep in mind when establishing church leaders:
1 Failure to place responsibility on new believers chokes their initiative and stunts their
spiritual growth.
 Encourage them to establish relationships.
 You want people to return to your church, build relationships, and take responsibility.
2 The church planting team should not make all of the decisions when they begin to get a
group together.
 WHen you begin to get a group together, if you are making all the decisions then the
group of people will be used to your leadership and will be unable or unwilling to
take leadership responsibilities on themselves.
3 Instruct them
A. Make sure that you have taught the standard of doctrine to them
 Without the clear understanding of important spiritual things like the
importance of a church, BIble doctrine, growing in the Christian life, the
church will never grow and will decay eventually.
 I Peter 3:15 - they should be able to give an answer to everyone that ask the
reason of the hope that is in them.
B. Make sure you have taught them the right conduct of living.
4 Charter Members
 In the BIble, there was a church and then a pastor comes. It was not a pastor and then
a church.
 Three things to make clear about chaarter members:
A. Salvation
B. Christian testimony among family and believers
C. Christian service
 Get all the charter members together and give them an opportunity to ask questions
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

A. Answer every question with the Bible.

 The charter members should get baptized.
 Everyone that is baptized should be considered charter members.
 During the entire process, you and your team are assisting and guiding.

 Conclusion
o The church planter should go about his life be conscious that his words, attitudes, and
acitons, because they can be used by God to produce responsible leaders or be
counter-productive.
o The church planter should ask himself if what he is saying or doing producing
leaders?
 Be very careful with your words and actions.
 Teach and train your men to have a business meeting
o Teach them to discuss things point by point.
o Sometimes a vote is required and sometimes prayer and discussion is required.

o The key is that the church planter and the team teach andd show by example.

 Teach them discipline.

o If they do not come to church for two months then remove them from membership.
o Once you have the church established, put the responsibility on the entire church to

"Building Greatness In The Local Church"
April 19th, 2017
 "The local church is the complete resourcee of all things, in all of life."
 WHat makes the local church "great"?
1 Great Truth
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 It all begins with God!

 The local church is the source of all truth.
 I Timothy 3:15
 It is the pillar and ground of ALL truth.
 Christ gave His life for the church
 Ephesians 5:25
2 Great Stewardship
 God expects us to be good stewards of what He has given us.
 He has given us the truth of His Word.
 He has given us the Gospel.
 We must give it out if we are going to be good stewards.
 He has given us Financial Resources
 Render to Caesar what is Caesar's
o Matthew 22:21
o The local church should be compliant with regulatory laws.

o Accountability and structure should be integrated in the local church.

 51 Million dollars will be embezzled in churches this year.
 Credit Cards or Charge Cards is one of the most available areas for
embezzlement.
3 Great Reputation
 Your reputation speaks louder than words!
 Banks often don't like to lend money to churches because they have no structure
and often don't pay your bills.
 You have 7 seconds to make a first impression...
 How does your community view:
o Your love for the community...
o Your church facilities...

 People often will judge you by the parking lot of your church.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 Cleanliness does not cost a lot.

 Get somebody that is particular and give them a checklist.
o Your financial stability...

 You need to step out by faith but don't get ahead of God and be
financially unstable.
 You need to pay your debts and bills.
 God gives the increase to those who are good stewards in His work.

The Church Planter and His Family

April 26th, 2017
 The church planter and God
1 The relationship the church planter has with God will determine his relationship with
his family.
 Acts 20:28 - "Take heed unto yourselves"
 Leadership is to reflect God's glory
 The center of the local church is the Lord Jesus Christ, but the local church is the
center of leadership.
2 Find the right study place
 Most effective pastors will study at night and work in the morning.
 Either get up extremely early or stay up extremely late.
 If your family can see you and you are not paying attention to them they will get
upset and think you are ignoring them.
 Your wife will help you.
3 Your wife should help you gaurd your time.
4 Teach your church about what a pastor's family is to do.
 The pastor's one job is to equip.
 You must set the tone for the pasto'r family.
 Your wife is not an assistant pastor.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 The church planter and his wife

1 Be financially set.
 Watch and limit your debt.
2 Your wife needs to know that you love her.
 Church planting requires a lot of your time.
 God-given responsibilities do not conflict.
 Being a husband, father, and church planter, should never conflict.
3 Do not put expectations on her as a seasoned pastor's wife.
 There is a learning season.
 Your wife will be on the same learning curve.
 You have the freedom to try and freedom to fail.
4 Women measure success by relationships but men by achievements.
 You may be excited by the church being full but she is upset that you haven't
taken her out for dinner.
 Proverbs 19:14
5 She will cue you in on the home and children.
 SHe isn't complaining or aggrevated. SHe is letting you know of the issues in the
home. SHe has a different perspective than you do. YOu have to act.
6 Schedule your time for dates with your wife.
 Leave, cleave, and weave.
 God already has a Saviour for His church. You are to be the saviour of your
home. Don't let your family decay while your ministry flourishes.
 Gaurd your time and tongue.
7 Church time
 Most effective pastors are putting in 70-80 hours a week for the church.
 Let your wife know that you are aware of her presence in the church.
 Let her serve in the church.
 Remember that you are her husband. She doesn't really have a pastor.
 Be careful about your children being too involved as in giving out buletins or
singing in the adult choir.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

 When you allow children to do such things, you are telling people that you do
not care.
 If you're children are doing all the work, no one in the church will take the
responsibility for themselves because they think it is not important.
 Let oyur children help but don't let them be the key people running around doing
everything.
8 Put a weekly schedule together with your wife.
 Begin the week on the same page as your wife.
 Start your week with your wife. She needs to know.
 Don't only dream about the ministry, but the family.
 Relationships with your wife and children are much like an atm machine. You can
only withdraw so much if you don't deposit anything.
 The church planter and his children
1 III John 4
 We have a brief moment in life with our children.
 Win your children with your time.
 How do you spell "love"? T.I.M.E.
 Someone will win the hearts of your children. It better be you.
 If you stay busy, time goes by fast. Don't let your time slip away from you that
you rrealize you never spent time with your children.
 Don't miss activities your chidlren are involved in.
 Make your house a fun place.
 It may require you to buy a basketball hoop, trampoline, etc.
2 Prepare your chidlren for Sunday.
 Prepare them physically, mentally, and spiritually.
 Make going to church something special for them.
3 Make your children feel special.
 They do not need to compete for a special place in your heart.
 Get them inolved in ministry but not putting them in charrge of ministries.
4 Exercise flexibility and comunication.
Church Planting Seminar Tim Carte

5 Pray with you family.

 Pray for missionaries, pray for the church, praise God for blessings.
 If they see you pray in church and not at home they are learning hypocrisy.
 Take rebuke and corrrection from your children.
 If you succeed in every area and fail at home, then you have not succeeded.
 Take heed unto thyself.
