The environmental impact of digital transformation

The amount of data created and stored globally is expected to reach 175 Zettabytes by 2025,
a six-fold increase from 2018. This will demand additional hardware and power
consumption, which; in turn, will increase the environmental impact of the digital sector and
there is already increasing attention on the environmental footprint of ICT equipment and
services as they become more widespread in all aspects of human life. It is the responsibility
of everyone to take action in addressing the challenges of climate change, as professionals
we must also seek ways that the digital sector can play its part. While digital technologies
are one of the sectors that has achieved greater efficiency; achieving about 100 times more
computation power from the same amount of energy per decade, it remains unsustainable.
The sector must continue to seek ways in which it can continue to support and drive
innovation, while addressing the global climate emergency for a greener and fairer future.

Choosing a research objective/question

Students are to choose their own research topic for this unit. Strong research projects are
those with clear, well focused and defined objectives. A central skill in selecting a research
objective is the ability to select a suitable and focused research objective. One of the best
ways to do this is to put it in the form of a question. Students should be encouraged by tutors
to discuss a variety of topics related to the theme to generate ideas for a good research
objective. The range of topics discussed could cover the following:
• The use of modern methods to reduce carbon emissions in IT network
systems.
• The impact of cloud data centres on the environment.
• The environmental implications of e-waste and ways to reduce it.

The Learner requires to produce a research proposal that clearly defines a research question
or hypothesis, supported by a literature review (Use the project proposal and ethical
consideration form template formats)

Project Proposal should cover following areas.

1. Definition of research problem or question. (This can be stated as a research question,
objectives or hypothesis)

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

11

2. Provide a literature review giving the background and conceptualisation of the proposed
area of study. (This would provide existing knowledge and benchmarks by which the
data can be judged)
3. Critically evaluate research process /different research methodologies that can be
applied to computing research project by demonstrating an understanding of the pitfalls,
ethical issues, and limitations. choose a suitable research methodology and justify the
selection based on theoretical/philosophical frameworks.
Draw points (1–3, above) together into a research proposal by getting agreement with your
tutor.

Title: Exploring Design for Environment (DfE) Principles in Electronic Product

Development: Enhancing Sustainability and End-of-Life Management

Introduction:
Design for Environment (DfE) principles encompass a holistic approach to product
development, focusing on optimizing sustainability, improving recyclability, and
minimizing environmental impacts throughout the entire lifecycle of electronic products.
This research proposal aims to explore the integration of DfE principles in electronic
product development processes and its implications for enhancing sustainability and end-of-
life management. The proposal begins with a comprehensive literature review to establish
the current state of knowledge in this field and subsequently formulates a research question
to guide the study.

Research Question:
How can Design for Environment (DfE) principles be integrated into electronic product
development processes to optimize sustainability, improve recyclability, and minimize
environmental impacts during the end-of-life stage?

Literature Review:
The literature review will examine existing theories, frameworks, and best practices related
to DfE principles in electronic product development. Key areas to be explored include:

1. DfE Principles and Concepts: This section will provide an overview of DfE principles,
including eco-design, life cycle assessment, material selection, energy efficiency, and waste
management. It will explore the theoretical foundations and key concepts that underpin the
integration of DfE principles in product development.

2. Sustainable Design Strategies: This section will delve into various sustainable design
strategies employed in electronic product development, such as product modularization,
design for disassembly, remanufacturing, and closed-loop supply chains. It will examine
case studies and examples of successful implementation of these strategies to enhance
sustainability and recyclability.

3. Environmental Impact Assessment: This section will focus on the assessment

methodologies used to evaluate the environmental impacts of electronic products. It will
review life cycle assessment (LCA) studies that quantify the environmental footprint of
products, including energy consumption, resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and
waste generation.

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

23

4. Regulatory Frameworks and Standards: This section will explore the role of regulations,
standards, and certifications in promoting the adoption of DfE principles in electronic
product development. It will examine international and regional regulations, such as the
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive and the Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, as well as voluntary certifications like EPEAT
(Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool).

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

24

P2 Examine appropriate research methods and approaches to primary and secondary

research.

Research Methodology:

The research methodology section will critically evaluate different research methodologies
applicable to this study. Various approaches, such as case studies, surveys, interviews, or a
combination of these, will be considered. The selection of a suitable research methodology
will be
justified based on theoretical and philosophical frameworks, taking into account the specific
objectives of the study and the availability of data. Ethical considerations, such as data
privacy and
responsible waste management practices, will also be addressed.

Research Methods and Approaches to Primary and Secondary Research:

Research methods play a crucial role in gathering data and generating insights to address
research questions or hypotheses. The choice of research methods depends on the nature of
the research, the type of data needed, and the resources available. Both primary and
secondary research methods are commonly used in academic, scientific, and business
research. Let's examine the appropriate research methods and approaches for primary and
secondary research:

Primary Research Methods:

Primary research involves collecting new data directly from participants or sources. It
provides firsthand information that is specific to the research objectives. Here are some
common primary research methods:

1. Surveys: Surveys involve administering questionnaires or structured interviews to collect

data from a sample of participants. Surveys can be conducted online, via telephone, or in-
person. They are effective for gathering quantitative data, measuring attitudes, opinions,
behaviors, and demographics.

2. Interviews: Interviews involve conducting one-on-one or group conversations with

participants. They can be structured (following a predetermined set of questions) or
unstructured (allowing for open-ended discussions). Interviews are valuable for collecting
qualitative data, exploring complex issues, and understanding participants' perspectives and
experiences.

3. Observations: Observational research involves systematically watching and recording

behavior in real-world settings. Researchers may adopt a participant observation approach,
where they immerse themselves in the research context, or a non-participant observation
approach, where they observe without direct involvement. Observations are useful for
capturing natural behavior, interactions, and contextual details.

4. Experiments: Experiments involve manipulating variables and assessing their impact on a

dependent variable while controlling for other factors. They are effective in establishing

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

25

cause-and-effect relationships. Experiments can be conducted in controlled laboratory

settings or naturalistic environments.

Secondary Research Methods:

Secondary research involves utilizing existing data and information collected by others. It
involves analyzing and synthesizing data from various sources to generate insights. Here are
some common secondary research methods:

1. Literature Reviews: Literature reviews involve systematically reviewing and synthesizing

existing scholarly articles, books, reports, and other relevant publications. They provide a
comprehensive overview of existing knowledge, identify research gaps, and inform the
research design.

2. Document Analysis: Document analysis involves examining and extracting data from
various types of documents, such as reports, policies, archival records, and websites. It
helps researchers gain insights into historical trends, policy implications, or organizational
practices.

3. Data Mining: Data mining involves using computational techniques to explore large
datasets and identify patterns, relationships, or trends. It is commonly used in quantitative
research to extract valuable information from databases, surveys, social media, or other
digital sources.

4. Meta-analysis: Meta-analysis involves statistically combining the results of multiple

studies to generate more robust and generalizable conclusions. It is particularly useful when
individual studies have varying sample sizes or produce conflicting findings.

5. Case Studies: Case studies involve in-depth analysis of a specific individual, group,
organization, or event. They rely on multiple sources of data, including interviews,
documents, and observations, to provide rich and contextualized insights.

6. Systematic Reviews: Systematic reviews follow a rigorous and structured approach to

identify, assess, and synthesize the findings of multiple studies on a specific research
question or topic. They aim to provide an unbiased and comprehensive summary of the
available evidence.

It is important to note that primary and secondary research methods are not mutually
exclusive and can be combined in a research study. For example, a researcher may conduct
surveys (primary research) to gather data directly from participants and then complement
the findings with a literature review (secondary research) to contextualize the results within
existing knowledge.

In conclusion, selecting appropriate research methods and approaches depends on the

research objectives, the type of data needed, and the available resources. Primary research
methods allow for the collection of firsthand data,

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

26

while secondary research methods leverage existing data sources to gain insights. By
carefully selecting and implementing the appropriate research methods, researchers can
generate robust findings and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their respective
fields.

M1 Evaluate different research approaches and methodology and make justifications

for the choice of methods selected based on philosophical/ theoretical frameworks.

When selecting research approaches and methodologies, it is crucial to consider the

philosophical and theoretical frameworks that underpin the research. Different research
paradigms and theoretical perspectives guide researchers in understanding the nature of
reality, the relationship between the researcher and participants, and the ways in which
knowledge is constructed. Let's evaluate different research approaches and methodologies
and provide justifications for the choice of methods based on philosophical/theoretical
frameworks:

1. Positivist Approach:
The positivist approach is rooted in the belief that knowledge can be objectively observed
and measured. It emphasizes empirical evidence, quantification, and the verification of
hypotheses. Quantitative research methods such as surveys, experiments, and statistical
analysis align well with the positivist approach. These methods allow for the collection of
numerical data that can be analyzed using statistical techniques to test hypotheses and
establish causal relationships.

Justification: If the research aims to explore causal relationships between variables, test
hypotheses, or quantify phenomena, a positivist approach with quantitative methods would
be appropriate. This approach provides objective and generalizable findings that contribute
to theory development and empirical knowledge.

2. Interpretivist Approach:
The interpretivist approach emphasizes understanding and interpreting social phenomena
through subjective experiences, meanings, and context. It recognizes the influence of social
and cultural factors on human behavior. Qualitative research methods such as interviews,
observations, and case studies are often employed in interpretivist research. These methods
allow for in-depth exploration of individual perspectives, social interactions, and cultural
contexts.

Justification: When the research goal is to gain a deep understanding of complex social
phenomena, explore subjective experiences, or investigate social processes within specific
contexts, an interpretivist approach with qualitative methods is appropriate. This approach
provides rich and nuanced insights that capture the complexity and diversity of human
experiences.

3. Critical Theory Approach:

The critical theory approach focuses on uncovering power dynamics, social inequalities, and
the underlying structures that perpetuate them. It aims to challenge dominant ideologies and
promote social justice. Research methods associated with critical theory include critical
discourse analysis, participatory action research, and ethnography. These methods involve
engaging with marginalized voices, empowering participants, and deconstructing power
relationships.

M.M.M Rishad COL00087877 CRP Proposal

28

Justification: If the research aims to examine power structures, social inequalities, or

promote social change, a critical theory approach with methods that involve collaboration,
engagement, and empowerment of participants is appropriate. This approach provides
insights into the lived experiences of marginalized groups and supports efforts toward social
transformation.

4. Pragmatic Approach:
The pragmatic approach seeks practical solutions to real-world problems by drawing on
multiple research methods and perspectives. It acknowledges the importance of both
qualitative and quantitative data, as well as the context in which the research is conducted.
Mixed-methods research, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, is often
employed in a pragmatic approach.

Justification: When the research goal is to address real-world issues, understand complex
phenomena from multiple angles, and provide practical recommendations, a pragmatic
approach with mixed-methods research is suitable. This approach allows for a
comprehensive understanding of the research topic by integrating different types of data and
perspectives.

In selecting the appropriate research approaches and methodologies, researchers should

carefully consider the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of their study. The choice
should align with the research objectives, the nature of the research question, and the
desired depth of understanding. By selecting methods that are consistent with the
philosophical/theoretical frameworks, researchers can ensure that their research is
conceptually grounded and contributes to the relevant body of knowledge.

D1 Critically evaluate research methodologies and processes in application to a

computing research project to justify chosen research methods and analysis.

When conducting a computing research project, it is important to carefully evaluate and

select appropriate research methodologies and processes. The chosen research methods
should align with the objectives of the study, the type of data needed, and the theoretical
frameworks relevant to the computing field. Let's examine how different research
methodologies can be applied to a computing research project and justify the selection of
research methods based on the provided information.

1. Surveys:
Surveys can be an effective primary research method in a computing research project. They
allow researchers to collect quantitative data on participants' opinions, behaviors, and
demographics. In the context of computing, surveys can be used to gather information about
user preferences, satisfaction with software systems, or the adoption of new technologies.
By administering surveys, researchers can obtain a large amount of data from a diverse
sample of participants, enabling statistical analysis and generalizability of findings.

Justification: If the research objective is to understand users' attitudes, preferences, or

adoption patterns in computing, a survey methodology aligns well with the positivist
approach and provides quantitative data for analysis.

2. Interviews:
Interviews can provide valuable qualitative insights in a computing research project. They
allow researchers to engage with participants and gain a deeper understanding of their
experiences, perceptions, and challenges related to computing. Interviews can be
particularly useful when investigating user interactions with technology, exploring usability
issues, or studying the impact of computing on individuals' lives. Depending on the research
objectives, structured or unstructured interviews can be conducted.

Justification: When the research goal is to explore subjective experiences, contextual

factors, or human-computer interactions, an interpretivist approach with qualitative
interviews is suitable. This approach aligns with the interpretivist framework and provides
in-depth insights into participants' perspectives and experiences.

3. Observations:
Observational research can be applied in a computing research project to study user
behavior, system usage patterns, or human-computer interactions. Researchers can observe
users' actions, decision-making processes, or interactions with software or hardware
systems. Observations can be conducted in real-world settings or controlled environments,
depending on the research context.

Justification: If the research objective is to examine user behavior, understand usage

patterns, or evaluate system performance in real-world settings, an observational research
methodology aligns well with the positivist approach. This approach provides objective and
contextualized data on users' actions and interactions.

4. Experiments:
Experimental research methods can be employed in computing research to assess the impact
of interventions, new technologies, or system designs. By manipulating variables and
controlling for confounding factors, researchers can establish causal relationships and draw
conclusions about the effects of specific computing interventions or innovations.

Justification: When the research goal is to investigate cause-and-effect relationships, test

hypotheses, or evaluate the effectiveness of computing interventions, an experimental
research methodology aligns with the positivist approach. This approach allows for rigorous
control and systematic examination of variables.

5. Literature Reviews:
Secondary research methods, such as literature reviews, are vital in computing research
projects. They involve analyzing existing scholarly articles, conference papers, and other
relevant publications to provide a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge and
identify research gaps. Literature reviews help researchers contextualize their work within
the broader computing domain, understand theoretical frameworks, and identify potential
research directions.

Justification: Literature reviews are important in all research paradigms and approaches.
They allow researchers to critically evaluate existing theories, concepts, and methodologies
in the computing field. Literature reviews align with the pragmatic approach, as they
provide a comprehensive understanding of the research topic by integrating existing
knowledge from diverse sources.

In a computing research project, the chosen research methods and analysis techniques
should be justified based on the philosophical and theoretical frameworks mentioned earlier.
For example, if the research aims to explore users' perspectives on a novel human-computer
interface, a combination of qualitative interviews (interpretivist approach) and

quantitative surveys (positivist approach) could be employed. This mixed-methods

approach would provide a comprehensive understanding of users' experiences while also
quantitatively measuring their preferences and satisfaction.

It is essential to consider ethical considerations in computing research, such as data privacy

and responsible waste management practices. Researchers should ensure that data collection
processes comply with ethical guidelines, obtain informed consent from participants, protect
their privacy, and appropriately manage and dispose of any data collected.

In conclusion, when conducting a computing research project, it is crucial to critically

evaluate and select appropriate research methodologies and processes. The choice of
research methods should align with the research objectives, the type of data needed, and the
theoretical frameworks relevant to the computing field. By justifying the selection of
research methods based on the provided information and considering ethical considerations,
researchers can conduct robust and impactful computing research.
