3. Computer Based Interlocking (CBI)

3.1 General
CBI receives route setting information and track switch control from ATS or Local Control Panel
to control the aspect of ATP, shunting signal and track switch. Interlocking is performed by the
micro-processor to realise the safety functions. CBI also has such functions as self-checking,
monitoring, and storing the fault information. The CBI is an Entry-Exit system

3.2 Configuration
The CBI system proposed in this project consists of electronic interlocking rack, electronic
terminal rack, I/O rack, OT/FT rack, interlocking control panel, and interlocking monitor. This
system is installed at interlocking stations and Depot.
The main functions of the CBI system are:
1) Route control: switch control, ground signal control, interlocking, control command input
and state display output
2) Lock: detector lock, route lock, approach lock
CBI basic configuration for one station is as below.

Revision: A Title: Sub-System Overview (CBI)

Figure 3-1: Configuration of CBI

The CBI system consists of OC, CB, PB, and VDU.

For large stations, like Depot and stabling area, each OC consists of Master and Slave
configuration. Only one Master OC is installed at one Interlocking station.
Details of network is shown in “System Configuration Drawing Overview”.

3.3 Function

3.3.1 General Function

OC has the following functions. These functions are required in SEM.
Functions of OC are shown as below.
OC responds to ATS/VDU in other SER or OCC, when OC receives command from VDU or
ATS.
OC receiving command from ATS or VDU controls route with following procedure.
1) As other Route Control, Route Locking, Approach Locking and Blocking do not have conflict,
Route Control is set.
2) OC controls the point in the direction of Route by setting Route Control.
3) OC locks Route’s Approach Locking and Route Locking /point on Route, after changing
Point direction.
4) OC changes Single Aspect to R, V or G, after locking Approach Locking and Route Locking.

3.4 Equipment

3.4.1 OC
OC is a central equipment of CBI. It is set in the SER of interlocking stations. It connects to CB
to interface other equipment. OC doesn’t need relay for logic operation. OC controls SPARCS,
signal, point, PSD in a fail-safe manner as per the selection table and generate required output.
OC collects information about state of other equipment as follows to interlock each other.
(1) SPARCS Train existing
(2) Axle Counter Train existing
(3) Signal state of light
(4) Point machine state of position
(5) ESP state of button
(6) PSD state of Door
(7) EKT and SPK state of button

2) Ground signal control: Controls the aspect of the ground signal according to the route.
3) Interlocking: Provides interlocking between ground signal and switch and between ground
signals.
4) Control command input: Inputs and processes control commands from the interlocking control
panel and ATS.
5) State display output: Outputs track clear/occupied status, switch state, and signal aspect to
the interlocking control panel and monitor.
3.4.1.1.2 Lock
1) Detector lock: Disables the switch to be thrown over when a train occupies a track in the
detector section.
2) Route lock: Disables the switch to be thrown over within a section until a train has passed the
section completely after the route is clear.
3) Approach lock: Ensures the route for a given period when the signal aspect is changed to stop
aspect.
3.4.1.1.3 VEDIO DISPLAY UNIT (VDU)
VDU comprises of a personal computer and an operation panel. Normally, route setting and
track switching are performed by ATS. However, in case of ATS fault for example, VDU is used
to set routes and turn track switch etc. in manual mode.
The personal computer output such information as route setting and track switch to field
equipment. It input such information as track occupation information, signal aspect information
and fault information. These data are transmitted via LAN.
The operation panel output control information to the field equipment and input indication
information from the field equipment via I/O rack. Relay contact interface is utilised between the
operation panel and field equipment.

3.4.2 Realization of Fail-safe
The CBI equipment realises fail-safe function adopting the bus synchronous duplicated system
which is the technology widely used in Japanese railways.
Conceptual composition of the bus synchronous duplicated system is shown below.
1) CPU-A and CPU-B are running on identical software.
2) The normal relay functions when operation of CPU-A matches that of CPU-B.
3) The power for the output section is supplied at contact point of the normal relay.

Above two CPUs are composed of duplex system to maintaining safety. This system is allocated
to a single logic unit and two logic units are composed of logic portion of the electronic
interlocking equipment in redundant composition.

3.5 LAN interface function

Each portion composing this equipment relates to a kind of LAN line to work during exchanging
various information. The outline of LAN line is shown as follows.
1) The connection of LAN is shown in the following drawing.

Doc No: AMDPJ-MEGA-SYS-2103 Project: Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase - 1 Page 16 of 20

Revision: A Title: Sub-System Overview (CBI)

Figure 3-3:Connection method of LAN

a) There are two kinds of nodes.

・ Boundary node: This is only one node existing on the LAN line to generate the
transmission frame at every transmission period.
・ General node: They indicate all nodes except boundary node to relay the received
transmission frame.
b) Whether the operation as boundary node or general node is designated by DIP SW on LAN
unit of each node.
c) The LAN line is composed of duplex lines called L-line and R-line. Each line flows the data
in reverse to each other.
d) Each node connects to each portion called HOST to process its own task and to exchange
the information from LAN line.
e) The HOST does not recognise whether own node is boundary node or general node.

2) Composition of node
Each node has the CPU for transmission circuit and the CPU for control. The composition block
of node is shown in the following drawing.

3) Composition of node
Each node has the CPU for transmission circuit and the CPU for control. The composition block
of node is shown in the following drawing.

Revision: A Title: Sub-System Overview (CBI)

4) Transmission frame
The composition of transmission frame is shown in the following drawing.

Figure 3-5:Transmission frame

a) Each HOST (Logic block) is a Seat Reservation System which has the fixed area (called
unit data).
b) The unit data length is determined at the time of system construction to have the constant
in ROM of node side.
c) The HOST makes the unit data allocated to its own system. When it requests the answer
from the node, the node stores the received frame of each line in the storing position in
accordance with the unit data number to relay-transmit to the related lower line.
d) The unit data to each HOST is allocated by the arrangement among the HOSTs.
e) The HOST CRCC is a check code for each HOST and the Hardware CRCC is a check
code between nodes.
f) The node checks the hardware CRCC to notify the HOST of only correct data.
g) The HOST adds the HOST CRCC to check, and repeal the related data if abnormal.
h) The sequence number is added to confirm the refreshment of related information. The node
judges the reception of additional information by updating the sequence number to notify
the HOST.
The HOST judges by having updated the sequence number of related unit data that the
counterpart device is normally operating.
