Shell Structure - Case Analysis

The Bosjes Chapel by Steyn Studio is an example of a shell structure case study. It has a thin, self-supporting concrete shell roof that touches the ground in undulations and was constructed using 3D modeling to map the complex geometry. Reinforced with rebar and poured using shotcrete, the undulating white shell structure pays homage to local landscape forms while providing a pure structural form for the assembly space within.

SHELL STRUCTURE CASE ANALYSIS

WHAT IS A SHELL STRUCTURE

● A shell structure is a thin curved membrane or a

slab that is usually made from the reinforced
cement concrete.
● Reinforced cement concrete is used in the
construction of shell structures because it is a
highly plastic material.
● A shell Structure can be used as both structure
and covering membrane.
● They are structures that are capable of
maintaining their shape and the support loads
without any help of the frame or the solid mass
materials.
● One of the best feature of the shell structures is
their continuity and curvature. Due to its
structural continuity, the shells can transmit the
loads in a number of different directions.
● The main purpose of constructing the shell
structure is to reduce the self-weight of the
structure by making the structure as thin as
possible.

SELECTED CASE : Bosjes Chapel / Steyn Studio

Architects: Steyn Studio

Area : 430 m²

Structural Engineer : Henry

Fagan & Partners
CONSTRUCTION APPROACHES

● The roof is made of a thin concrete cast shell

and is self supporting touching the ground at
each undulation.
● 3D CAD models were used to calculate the
volume of material required for the structure as
it was a complex form
● The shell comprises 74 cubic metres of concrete
and 8175 kg of high tensile steel reinforcement.
● It is supported by four hidden reinforced
concrete buttresses, each with a vertical load of
close to 50 tonnes
● each reinforcing bar (top and bottom) had to be
individually cut and hand-bent to fit.
● The concrete was poured in the form of shotcrete –
pneumatically projected at high velocity through a
hose..

FORM AND ADAPTABILITY

● Its structural form pays homage to the
traditional Cape Dutch gables that dot the
Western Cape's rural landscapes by
imitating the profile of nearby mountain
ranges.
● each wave of the roof structure rises to a
peak and expanses of glazing adjoined
centrally by a crucifix is seen on the facade
● the crisp white form is conceived as a
lightweight, and dynamic structure which
appears to float within the valley
● In order to keep the structural form of the
roof and assembly space pure, other
elements of the buildings functional
programme are either hidden within the
plinth, or discretely within the outer corners
of the surrounding garden.
MATERIAL AND GEOMETRY

● The main material used is concrete with steel

bars used as reinforcement.
● All formwork was was designed as a system
of prefabricated trusses with a bent plywood
skin.
● Highly polished Terazzo is used for interior
flooring
● The undulating whitewashed ceiling casts an
array of shadows which dance within the
volume as light levels change throughout the
day.
● This modest panel of materials creates a
neutral background
● The form is made up of a mix of arch and
inverted arch geometry
● The structure is six metre high
