Title of Study
An investigation into the knowledge, attitude and perception of my community members on the
use of contraception.
Background
Contraception is the deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent
pregnancy as a consequence of having sexual intercourse. Contraception includes different
types such as: implants, oral contraceptive pills, injectables, Intrauterine device,
contraceptive ring, and sterilization. This research will be based on Intrauterine device also
known as (IUD. This device is inserted into the uterus (womb) to prevent conception
(pregnancy). The IUD can be a coil, loop, triangle, or T in shape made of plastic or metal.
IUDs are VERY effective. IUDs give you great, long-term protection against pregnancy —
they’re more than 99% effective. They work as well as sterilization and the birth control
implant. IUDs are one of the most effective methods you can get because there’s almost no
way you can mess it up. There are a variety of benefits of an IUD. There are long lasting- A
copper device can last up to 12 years, while hormones devices remain effective from three to
six years depending on the brand used. It also benefits as a multi-purpose IUD does not only
work to prevent pregnancy but also to help reduce the blood flow for women or girls that
have a heavy, painful period. It’s also convenient, unlike other forms of birth control, you
rarely have to worry about an IUD once it’s in place. It works until it expires or you have it
taken out. No more running to the pharmacy to pick up your monthly prescription or
worrying about remembering to take a pill every day. But also with benefits come with risks
which includes: Insertion pain- People may experience pain when the healthcare professional
inserts the IUD. Some describe intense pain, while others report minimal pain or no pain at
all. A skilled doctor can often perform a less painful insertion. Also including Pelvic
inflammatory disease (PID): In a small number of people, an IUD can irritate the uterus and
cervix, causing a painful condition called PID. This risk is only present for the first
month after insertion. Lastly, Pregnancy complications: In the unlikely event that someone
gets pregnant while using an IUD, the rate of pregnancy complications is much higher. These
complications may include miscarriage, preterm labor, infection following a miscarriage, and
ectopic pregnancy.
Statement of Problem
In the researcher’s community many individuals have a number of children that they seemingly
cannot adequately take care of which suggests negative or inadequate KAP regarding
contraception.
Objectives
To investigate the community’s knowledge on contraception IUD’s.
To investigate the community’s attitude on contraception IUD’S.
To investigate the community’s perception on contraception IUD’s.
