Section One: Introduction

1. What is the definition of Nahw?

Literal: Path
Technical: Combining the 3 parts of speech to form a correct sentence and knowing
the I’raab of the final letter in each word

2. What is the purpose of studying Nahw?

To avoid making mistakes in the Arabic language whilst speaking and writing and
combining the 3 parts of speech to form a correct sentence. The subject matter is
words and sentences.

Section Two: The Word

1. Utterance in Arabic divides into two categories. What are they? Define
each one of them.

Meaningful - It makes sense ‫َم ْوض ُْوع‬

Meaningless - It does not make sense ‫ل‬

2. A meaningful word in Arabic divides into two. What are they?

5. What is a complete compound?

Complete - A sentence which tells the listener some story, or information or indicates
to him that someone wants them to do something. Eg. The shop is on Upton Lane

6. What is an incomplete compound?

Incomplete - A statement made up of two or more words which do not give a


specified message. Eg. Small boy

7. What is the definition of a noun? Give an example

A word that conveys meaning on its own without a tense. Eg. ٌ‫ َف َرس‬A horse

8. What is the definition of a verb? Give an example

A word that conveys a meaning (action) on its own and includes a tense (past,
ْ ‫ دَ َر َس‬She studied
present or future). Eg. ‫ت‬

9. What is the definition of a particle? Give an example

A word that has no tense and cannot be understood without a noun or verb.
Eg. ‫ َع َل ْي ُك ْم‬Upon you

10. What are the categorisations of a noun?

1. ‫ َجا ِم ٌد‬A noun which is not derived and nothing is anything derived from it eg
‫ ِح َما ٌر‬A donkey

2. ‫صدَ ْر‬
ْ ‫ َم‬Many words are derived from it. It can be known as a verbal
ُ To Oppress
noun/infinitive (-ing or To… words). eg ‫ظ ْل ٌم‬

3. ْ ‫ ُم‬A noun derived from Masdar eg ‫ َظالِ ٌم‬An Oppressor

It can be used as a sign of a noun because a verb and particle will not have a
َ ‫َفاطِ َم ُة = اسم‬
feminine round taa but a noun will. Eg. ‫الع َلم‬

11. What is the adjective? Give examples of how it can be used as a sign of a
noun.
