INTRODUCTION
Condition assessment and trend analysis forms a prerequisite of the
Condition based monitoring of Power Equipment in power stations and
process industries. Periodic diagnostic tests on critical electrical power
equipment are necessary not only for the condition assessment of the
equipment but also for trend analysis from periodic Condition Monitoring.
A well-organized diagnostic testing program increases the reliability,
minimizes the accidents, reduces unplanned shutdowns and lengthens
the mean time between failures of electrical power equipment.
The deterioration of electrical equipment is normal, and this process
begins as soon as the equipment is installed. If deterioration is not
checked, it can cause electrical failures and malfunctions. With an
electrical preventive maintenance and testing program, potential hazards
QCTD-M / QHVPS-12 User manual
that can cause failure of equipment or interruption of electrical service can
be discovered and corrected. Properly maintained equipment reduces
downtime by minimizing catastrophic failures. To carry out the successful
operation of electrical equipment and apparatus, it is essential to set up
effective condition monitoring and testing program.
In the present power scenario, the optimal use of assets of utilities is the
prime need of the day. To manage the assets, the proper inputs, regarding
the health of high voltage equipments, are essential to take timely action
on scheduled maintenance and/or phasing out of asset. For timely inputs,
the diagnostic testing of assets in the field is essential.

PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENT OF CAPACITANCE AND Tan
DELTA BRIDGE.
The Bridge is based on transformer arm ratio principle. The heart of
bridge is a differential toroidal transformer which is made of very high
Permeability Mu Metal.
The current I1& I2 through Cx and Cs flow in W1 and W2 respectively If
W1 .I1 & W2.I2 are not equal then a voltage will be induced in W3.
The bridge balance is achieved by changing W1, W2 turns for C value
and R’, C’ for Tan δ.
At balance W1.I1 = W2.I2 and there is no voltage induced in W3.
W1.I1 = W.2.I2
Solving this for Cx we get
& Tan δ is given by
Cx = CsW2
W1
Tan δ = CRW
The above gives the series capacitance and series Tan δ values.

OPERATING PROCEDURE OF Power Supply QHVPS-12
Important Points
Connect Proper ground at External Ground and provide supply to the
instrument with three pin main cord with proper sequence of phase,
neutral and ground.
Connect Bridge connections with Power Supply.
Do not bypass any safety feature by making any external arrangements.
Do not apply HV without Bridge connected to Power Supply.
Do not change mode selection position while high voltage is applied.
Do not use two wire extension box for the mains.
De-energized the object before connection with the system. Use earth
rods or discharge rod wherever required.
- Connect the instrument to 230 V AC Mains.
- Connect Earth externally to Earth terminal provided at the side
of the equipment.
- Interconnect the Capacitance and Tan Delta Bridge QCTD-M as
shown in fig.
- Connect HV cable to HV terminal of object under test
- Connect LV to the LV terminal or test point of object under test.
- At Switch ON the instrument. Status of Indication Lamps is as
under
LAPMS / INDICATIONS STATUS
Mains ON
Open Ground OFF
Interlock OFF
HT ON OFF
HT OFF ON
QCTD-M / QHVPS-12 User manual
Incase open ground lamp is ON means that either the ground in 3
pin Mains socket is not provided or proper external ground is not
connected to instrument.
Interlock lamp ON means that the external interlock is open. Pl.
ensures all interlock provided with instrument are closed.
The variac control marked SET volts is turned full anti-clockwise.
Select the desired test mode with the help of selector switch.
Press the HT ON switch on front panel. The HT ON indication
Will turn ON and HT OFF indication will be OFF.
Now gradually raise the voltage to desired level.
Balance the Bridge as explained in OPERATING AND BALANCING
THE BRIDGE section.
After the test, reduce the test voltage to zero and Press the HT
OFF switch. The set will be de-energized.
Ground the Cx under test.
If the object under test is situated in the yard with very heavy
Interference, then switch phase reversal toggle switch. Take one
more measurement of capacitance & tan delta as per above,
reduce the voltage to zero, switch the phase reversal switch to the
other position and again apply the voltage. Again note down the
capacitance & tan delta values. The average these two values
should be taken as true value.
QCTD-M / QHVPS-12 User manual
OPERATING AND BALANCING THE BRIDGE.
Set the Bridge for operation as desired. Confirm that the connections are
proper and proper earth is provided.
Keep the Cx factor switch on the desired range if the approximate value
of Cx is known, otherwise keep it on position 1
Switch ON the sensitivity cum ON-OFF switch and keep the sensitivity at
low position i.e. the NULL indicator should be somewhere in the middle.
The LED showing Battery condition should glow indicating that Battery is
ok. If this LED is not glowing then replace the battery. Battery
compartment is at the back panel of the Bridge.
NOW start balancing the bridge.
- First increase the ‘C’ balances dials marked x 100, the NULL
indicator should decrease. If decreasing then, further increase this
step till you have an increasing NULL indication.
- Depending of the position of X 100 rotary switch now operator can
decide proper Cx Factor. Again by after selecting proper Cx factor
increase X 100 switch.
- Now use x 10 Dial to further balance the bridge. Increase the
sensitivity if required.
- It may be possible that the balancing with some position will Null
indicator will go away from Null point. Then reduced that position
and increase the next rotary switch to get proper balancing.
- Now use Tan delta dials 10 -1 and 10 -4 (either 0.1, 1 or 10 tan delta
factor) and balance the bridge.
QCTD-M / QHVPS-12 User manual
- Now alternatively use the Capacitance and Tan delta dials to get
balance the Bridge.
- Now alternatively use the Capacitance and Tan delta dials to
balance the bridge. Increase the sensitivity as the balance
progresses.
- Thus by alternatively using Capacitance & Tan delta dial the fine
balance is achieved.
- Ideally the Null meter will be zero and sensitivity at maximum at full
balance.
- But in practice the best possible higher sensitivity without
disturbance and minimum possible Null will give accurate values. It
is necessary to always go for full sensitivity.
- Full sensitivity meaning after balance if the least count of balancing
of capacitance and tan delta is moved visible indication should be
on Null indicator. This may be achieved even though sensitivity is
not at 100%
