Section - 05 50 00 Metal Fabrications
DIVISION 5: METALS
PART 1: GENERAL
1.01: SCOPE
The work to be done shall provide miscellaneous metal and metal fabrications, complete, in place,
as specified or needed for a complete and proper installation and not specifically called for in other
Sections.

1.03: SUBMITTALS
a. Product Data: Submit as follows:
1. Complete materials list of items proposed to be provided.
2. Manufacturer's specifications and other data required to demonstrate compliance with
specified requirements
3. Templates for anchor and bolt installation by other trades
b. Shop Drawings:
1. Submit shop drawings and erection drawings of items proposed to be fabricated, furnished,
and installed. Include plans, sections, elevations, and details as needed for both fabrication
and installation.
2. Verify dimensions in field before starting fabrication.
1.04: DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
a. Protection: Protect materials before, during, and after installation and protect work and materials
of other trades.
b. Replacements: In event of damage, immediately make repairs and replacements necessary for
acceptance of Architect at no additional cost to the Owner.
PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.01: MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS
a. General: For fabrication of work which will be exposed to view, use only those materials which are
smooth and free from surface blemishes including pitting, seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade
name, and roughness.
b. Materials:
1. Steel Plates, Shapes, and Bars: ASTM A 36
2. Cold-Rolled Carbon Steel Sheets: ASTM A 366
3. Malleable Iron Castings: ASTM A 47, grade best suited for purpose.
4. Welded Wire Mesh: ASTM A 1064
c. Steel Pipe: ASTM A 120 or ASTM A 53, type best suited for purpose, Grade A, black finish unless
galvanizing is required, standard weight (Schedule 40) unless otherwise indicated. (Use A 53 for
structural purposes). Where design is to be provided by Contractor, e.g., curtain walls and window
walls, schedule shall be shown on accepted shop drawings.
d. Sleeves: ASTM A 120, Schedule 40 black steel pipe, sized with I.D. of sleeve 1" (25mm) larger than
O.D. of item being sleeved including any insulation, and except depth of wall construction, with
square-cut ends free of burrs or projections.
e. Concrete Inserts: Threaded or wedge type, galvanized ferrous castings, either malleable iron ASTM
A 47 or cast steel ASTM A 27. Provide bolts, washers, and shims as required, hot-dipped
galvanized, ASTM A 153.
4. Form exposed work true to line and level, with accurate angles and surfaces and with straight
sharp edges.
5. Ease exposed edges to radius of approximately 1/32" (0.80mm) unless otherwise shown.
6. Form bent-metal corners to smallest radius possible without causing grain separation or
otherwise impairing work.
7. Weld corners and seams continuously, complying with AWS recommendations. At exposed
connections, grind exposed welds smooth and flush; match and blend with adjoining
surfaces.
8. Form exposed connections with hairline joints, flush and smooth, using concealed fasteners
wherever possible. Use exposed fasteners of type shown, or if not shown, use Phillips flat-
head (countersunk) screws or bolts.
9. Show and provide type anchorage required. Coordinate with supporting structure. Fabricate
and space anchoring devices to provide adequate support for intended use.
10. Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap miscellaneous metal work as required to receive finish hardware
and similar items.
b. Railing Structural Load Capabilities: Railings shall be capable of withstanding load of at least 200 lb.
applied in any direction at any point on rail. In addition, they shall withstand the following loads:
1. Galvanizing: Provide zinc coating for those items required or specified to be galvanized, as
follows:
• ASTM A 153 for galvanizing iron and steel hardware.
• ASTM A 123 for galvanizing rolled, pressed, and forged steel shapes, plates, bars, and strip
1/8" (3mm) thick and heavier and assembled steel products.
2. Shop Painting:
• Shop paint miscellaneous steel work, except members or portions of members to be
embedded in concrete, surfaces to be coated with fireproofing, surfaces and edges to be
field-welded, and galvanized surfaces, unless otherwise specified or required for design.
• Remove scale, rust, and other deleterious materials before applying shop coat.
• Clean off heavy rust and loose mill scale in accordance with Structural Steel Painting Council
SSPC-SP-2 or SSPC-SP-3.
• Remove oil, grease, and similar contaminants in accordance with SSPC-SP-1.
• Immediately after surface preparation, brush or spray on primer in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendations, and at rate to provide recommended minimum dry film
thickness.
• Use painting methods which shall result in full coverage of joints, corners, edges, and
exposed surfaces.
• Apply one shop coat to fabricated metal items; except, apply two shop coats to surfaces
inaccessible after assembly or erection. Change tint of second coat to distinguish it from first
coat.
• Metal exposed on building facade shall be painted as specified in Section 09380,
POLYVINYLIDENE FLUORIDE.
c. Workmanship:
1. Work shall be performed by skilled workmen, especially trained and experienced in this type
of work.
2. Forming operations shall be done prior to finishing.
3. Metal work shall be true to detail with sharp, clean profiles, straight and free from defects
impairing strength or appearance, fitted with proper joints and intersections, and with
specified finishes.
5. Use metal bar grating as specified in NAAMM Metal Bar Grating Manual and in this Section.
6. Provide removable grating sections with end-banding bars for each panel. Provide not less than
four saddle clip anchors designed to fit over two bearing bars, and four stud bolts with washers
and nuts, unless otherwise required to prevent movement.
7. Notch or cut out gratings for penetrations as indicated, and lay out units to allow grating
removal without disturbing items penetrating the grating.
8. Provide banding for openings in grating separated by more than four bearing bars, of same
material and size as bearing bars, unless otherwise required.
9. Do not notch bearing bars at supports to maintain elevations.
10. Weld stud bolts which receive saddle clip anchors to supporting steel members.
11. Fabricate frames of steel shapes, welded construction, with welded-on anchors. Finish to
match gratings.
12. Hot dip galvanize after fabrication of grating and frames exposed to weather.
e. Steel Pipe Railings:
1. Fabricate pipe railings to dimensions and details required with smooth bends and welded
joints ground smooth and flush. Where details are not shown, use 1 1/2" (38mm) steel pipe.
2. Adjust railings prior to anchoring to ensure matching alignment at butting joints, and space
posts not more than 96 inches (2.40m) on centers, unless otherwise shown. Plumb posts in
each direction.
3. Railing bends shall be uniformly formed in jigs with cylindrical cross section of pipe maintained
throughout entire bend.
4. Secure posts and rail ends to building construction as follows:
• Anchor posts in concrete by means of pipe sleeves set and anchored into concrete.
• Provide sleeves of galvanized steel pipe, not less than 6" (150mm) long and having inside
diameter of not less than 1/2" (12mm) greater than outside diameter of inserted pipe.
• Weld connections. Grind smooth. Welding electrodes: AWS A5.1 or A5.5, E 70 Series,
manual, shielded metal-arc or submerged metal-arc.
• Provide anchors and brackets of types required. Provide anchors and brackets of standard
manufacture suitable for intended use.
• Provide steel plate closure secured to bottom of sleeve and of width and length not less
than 1 inch (25mm) greater than outside diameter of sleeve.
• After posts have been inserted into sleeves, fill annular space between post and sleeve solid
with non-shrink, nonferrous grout.
• Cover anchorage joint with round steel flange welded to post.
• Galvanize steel railings including pipe, fittings, brackets, fasteners, and other ferrous metal
components exterior to building and where exposed to weather.
f. Kick plates: Provide kick plates between railing posts where indicated. Fabricate of 1/8" (3mm) steel
flat bars not less than 6" (150mm) high and secured as indicated.
g. Miscellaneous Framing and Supports:
1. Provide miscellaneous steel framing and supports which are not part of structural steel
framework, as required to complete work.
2. Fabricate miscellaneous units to sizes, shapes, and profiles required; or, of required
dimensions to receive adjacent work to be retained by framing.
3. Fabricate miscellaneous units from structural steel shapes, plates, and steel bars welded
construction with mitered joints for field connections.
4. Cut, drill, and tap units to receive hardware.
5. Equip units with integrally welded anchors for casting into concrete, and furnish inserts if units
must be installed after concrete is placed.
6. Except as otherwise required, space anchors 24" (600mm) on centers, and provide minimum
anchor units of 1 1/4" x 1/4" x 8" (31mm x 6mm x 200mm) steel straps.
7. Galvanize miscellaneous frames and supports where exposed to weather or moist conditions
and elsewhere as required.
h. Loose Bearing and Leveling Plates and Concrete Embedment:
1. Provide loose bearing and leveling plates for steel items bearing on concrete construction,
made flat, free from warp or twists, and of required thickness and bearing area.
2. Drill templates to receive anchor bolts and for grouting as required.
3. Galvanize after fabrication.
4. After fabrication, touch up damaged surfaces, galvanizing with specified galvanizing repair
painting. Shop prime with material compatible with finish paint specified in Section 09900.
i. General Fabrication:
1. Finished members shall be free of twists, bends, or other distortion, and any visible defects of
surfaces.
2. Weld connections. Welding shall confirm to requirements of the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding
Code. Welds shall be made solid and homogeneous part of metals joined and shall be free
from pits or incorporated slag or scale, and shall be of full areas and length indicated or
required to develop required strength of connection. Welds shall be continuous, and where
on exposed surfaces, shall be ground flush and smooth.
3. Deliver sleeves for concrete floor and wall penetrations and railing posts to be set in concrete,
in ample time for building-in. Coordinate setting at proper location.
j. Miscellaneous Trim:
1. Provide shapes and sizes for profiles required.
2. Use concealed field splices wherever possible.
3. Provide cutouts, fittings, and anchorage as required for coordination of assembly and
installation with other work.
k. Steel: Galvanize miscellaneous frames and supports and other miscellaneous carbon steel where
exposed to weather or most conditions.
l. Corner Angle Guards: Fabricate to size(s) indicated complete with welded anchors for embedment
in concrete. Galvanize after fabrication.
2.06: PAINTING
a. Exterior Metalwork: Exposed metal on building facade shall be shop finish painted with same
paint as specified in Section 09830.
b. Interior Metalwork: Prime coat carbon steel and galvanize steel inside of building as specified in
Section 09900 except as follows:
1. Metal embedment in concrete.
2. Metal to be coated with fireproofing
3. Metal embedment in concrete.
4. Metal within 2" (50mm) of proposed job site weld.
2.07: MISCELLANEOUS FRAMING AND SUPPORTS
a. Provide miscellaneous steel framing and supports which are not part of structural steel
framework, as required to complete work.
b. Fabricate miscellaneous units to sizes, shapes, and profiles shown or, if not shown, of required
dimensions to receive adjacent work to be retained by framing.
c. Provide anchorage as detailed. Furnish inserts if assemblies must be installed after concrete is
placed.
PART 3: EXECUTION
3.01: INSPECTION
a. Examine areas and conditions under which miscellaneous metal items are to be installed, and
correct conditions detrimental to proper and timely completion of Work. Do not proceed until
unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.02: PREPARATION
Furnish setting drawings, diagrams, templates, instructions, and directions for installation of
anchorages, such as concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and miscellaneous items having integral
anchors which are to be embedded in concrete construction. Coordinate delivery of such items
to project site.
3.03: INSTALLATION
a. Fastening to In-Place Construction:
1. Provide anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing miscellaneous metal
fabrications to in-place construction including threaded fasteners for concrete inserts, toggle
bolts, machine bolts, through-bolts, lag bolts, wood bolts, wood screws, and other
connectors as required.
2. Slotted inserts shall be of types required to engage with anchors.
3. Securely fasten metal items plumb and true to lines and levels.
4. Anchorage Devices Embedded in Other Construction: Anchorage devices, such as concrete
inserts, anchor bolts, cast iron corner guards, bollards, trench and dock edge angles, and
other items having integral anchors which are to be embedded in cast-in-place concrete
construction shall be delivered to project site in time to be installed before start of cast-in-
place concrete operations. Provide setting drawings, templates, instructions, and directions
for installation of anchorage items.
b. Cutting, Fitting and Placement:
1. Carefully perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installation of miscellaneous metal
fabrications.
2. Set work accurately in location, alignment, and elevation, and make plumb, level, true, and
free of rack, measured from established lines and levels. Work shall be fitted in place before
securing.
3. Provide temporary bracing or anchors in formwork for items which are to be built into
concrete or similar construction.
4. Fit exposed connections accurately together to form tight hairline joints.
5. Weld connections which are to be left as exposed joints, but cannot be shop welded because
of shipping size limitations. Such field welds shall be ground smooth and flush and shop coat
shall be touched-up to cover welds and ground off areas, e.g., steel backup systems on
window walls and glass curtain walls.
6. Grind exposed joints smooth and touch up shop paint coat. Do not weld, cut, or abrade
surfaces of exterior units which have been hot dip galvanized after fabrication, and are
intended for bolted or screwed field connections.
c. Setting Anchorage Devices: Anchorage devices shall be set in concrete-in-place construction in
accordance to manufacturer's printed instructions. Holes shall be of recommended depth and
diameter and shall be drilled to size recommended by manufacturer of particular anchorage
device used. Drilled holes shall be left rough, not reamed, and free from drill dust.
d. Field Welding: Comply with AWS Code for procedures of manual shielded metal-arc welding,
appearance and quality of weld made, and methods used in correcting welding work.
e. Stair Railings and Handrails: Adjust railings prior to securing in place to ensure proper matching at
butting joints. Correct alignment throughout their length. Posts shall be spaced as shown but
not more than 8' (2.4m) on centers. Plumb posts in each direction. Secure posts and rail ends to
building construction as follows:
1. Anchor posts in concrete by means of pipe sleeves set and anchored into concrete. Provide
sleeves of galvanized, standard weight, steel pipe, not less than 6" (150mm) long, and having
inside diameter not less than 1/2" (12mm) greater than outside diameter of inserted pipe
post. Provide steel plate closure secured to bottom of sleeve; closure shall be of width and
length not less than 1" (25mm) greater than outside sleeve diameter. After posts have been
inserted into sleeves, annular space between post and sleeve shall be filled with non-shrink
grout, nonferrous grout. Cover anchorage joint with round steel flange welded to post.
2. Anchor posts to steel with steel oval flanges, angle type of floor type as required by
conditions, welded to posts, and bolted to steel supporting members.
3. Anchor rail ends into concrete with steel round flanges welded to rail ends and anchored into
wall construction with lead expansion shields and bolts.
4. Anchor rail ends to steel with steel oval or round flanges to tail ends and bolted to structural
steel members.
f. Handrails: Secure to walls by means of wall brackets and wall return fitting at handrail ends.
Provide brackets of malleable iron castings with not less than 3" (75mm) projection from finish
wall surface to center of pipe drilled to receive 3/8" (10mm) bolt. Locate brackets not more than
60" (1500mm) o.c. Provide wall return fittings of cast iron castings, flush type, with same
projection as that specified for wall brackets. Secure wall brackets and wall return fitting to
building construction as follows:
1. For concrete anchorage, use bolt anchor expansion shields and lag bolts.
2. For stud partition anchorage, use toggle bolts having square heads.
3.04: FIELD WELDING
a. Comply with AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.3 for procedures of manual shielded metal-arc welding,
appearance and quality of welds made, and methods used in correcting welding work.
3.05: MISCELLANEOUS PLATES AND SHAPES
a. Miscellaneous plates and shapes for items that do not form part of structural steel framework
such as lintels, sill angles, miscellaneous mountings, and frames shall be provided to complete
work. Miscellaneous plates and shapes shall conform to ASTM A 36.
3.06: EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION
a. Metalwork shall be so designed and installed that where were no objectionable distortion or
overstressed fastening as metal expands and contracts.
b. Design and construct expansion joints and other joints exposed to weather to remain
permanently watertight.
3.07: INSPECTION AND ACCEPTANCE PROVISIONS
a. Finished Metalwork Requirements: Metalwork will be rejected and shall be replaced for any of the
following deficiencies:
1. Installed metal items having abraded, or otherwise damaged exposed-to-view surfaces that
cannot be removed by cleaning or repairing.
2. Metal surfaces to be in contact with dissimilar materials that are not protected as specified.
b. Repair of Defective Work: Defective work shall be removed and replaced with materials that meet
requirements of this Section.
c. Paint and Touch-up: Primed surfaces which are burned by welding or otherwise damaged shall be
cleaned, repaired, and touched-up with same kind of primer as was originally shop applied.
Touch-up and repair shall be accomplished as soon as possible after damage or installation has
occurred. Surface preparation shall be performed as required for original prime coating. See
Section 09900. Surfaces of miscellaneous items which had not been prime coated in shop shall
be prime coated in field to meet specifications for shop prime coating. Galvanized surfaces such
have been burned during welding or otherwise damaged shall be repaired in accordance with
ASTM A 780.
