Catalog ME 489: Finite Element Analysis in Mechanical Design (3-0-3)
Description Introduction to Finite element Method and it’s application in different mechanical problems including:
static loading of beams and beam structures, free vibration of beam and beam structures, 2-D plane stress
and plane strain elasticity, and 2-D steady state heat conduction. Using a commercial FE software, in solving
various design problems.
Course The purpose of this course is to
Objectives 1. Teach students the basic concepts in the finite element method (FEM) as related to solving
engineering problems in solids and heat transfer.
2. Provide students with a working knowledge of finite element analysis tools and their use in
mechanical design.
Course After taking this course, students will be able to:
Learning
Outcomes 1. Develop and solve stiffness equations for truss, beam and plane elements.
2. Develop 1-D FE elements equations for heat transfer and thermal stress analysis.
3. Develop 1-D structural dynamics equations.
4. Form global matrices, apply boundary conditions and solve for nodal solution variables.
5. Post-process data to obtain secondary parameters such as stress and heat flux.
6. Model and solve 1-D, 2-D and 3-D structural problems using commercial FEA software.
7. Model and solve heat transfer and thermal stress problems using commercial FEA software.
8. Model and solve structural dynamics problems using commercial FEA software.
9. Work in teams to solve design problem using FEA.
10. Produce well-organized and well-documented written report. Students will be able to present this
material orally in a clear, interesting, and well-organized manner.

ME 489: FEA in Mechanical Design Course Syllabus Second Semester 2012-2013 (122)
Attendance Attendance is MANDATORY and will be checked at the beginning of each lecture. Late coming is not
encouraged as it disturbs students and instructor. Excuses for absence should be approved by the
Deanship of Student Affairs and submitted to the instructor within a week following the last day of
absence. For any unexcused absence, 1/2 mark will be deduced from the student overall grade.
A regular student will not be allowed to continue in the course and take the final examination and will be
given a DN grade if his unexcused absences are more than 20% of the lecture scheduled for the course
regardless of his performance.
HW & It is your responsibility to solve the Home Work (HW) as soon as the material is covered in the class. HW
Quizzes solution will be posted on WebCT. Quizzes will be given regularly based on the HW problems. All HW
problems assigned during a given week are due in class one week from date of assignment, unless
otherwise stated by your instructor. Late HW is not accepted.
Design All students will be required to work on a term project. Details of the requirement, grading policy and a
Project list of suggested topics will given later by the instructor. However, an individual can also suggest a topic
of his interest.
Final Exam The Major and Final Exams will be CLOSED BOOK. You will be allowed to prepare ONE SINGLE A4 Size
Sheet listing all important formulas that you need. Both sides of the sheet can be used.
Assessment HW, Quizzes, Design Project and Exams.
Methods
Computer Both commercial CAE codes such as ANSYS or ALGOR and small instructional FEM codes are
usage utilized by students in at least two pre-design projects in which students learn (1) modeling
practices necessary to obtain reliable results and (2) the proper role of FEA in the overall
design process. One open-ended mechanical design project is assigned
