I. Country’s culture and tradition in business meetings

History

Mexico is a country that is a part of southern North America. The settlement of

hunter-gatherer communities marks the beginning of human habitation in Mexico,

which occurred around 13,000 years ago. Advanced Mesoamerican civilizations like

the Olmec, Teotihuacan, and Maya rose to prominence between 1200 BCE and 400

AD. These civilizations created stunning architectural feats and elaborate writing,

math, and astronomy systems.

The Spanish Empire seized control of Mexico in 1521, and it was ruled by the

Spanish for around three hundred years. Spanish colonizers forced their language,

religion, and culture on the indigenous population throughout this time, which

resulted in major cultural blending. Mexico was free from Spanish rule at the

beginning of the 19th century, but it still faced significant political and economic

difficulties.

Mexico saw substantial social and political transformations in the 20th century,

including the nationalization of important industries in the 1930s and a period of

revolutionary unrest in the early 1900s. The nation went through phases of

economic expansion as well as times of political unrest, such as the 1910 Mexican

Revolution and the 1968 student uprisings.

2 | P a ge
Mexico is a dynamic nation with a varied population and culture today. One of

the biggest economies in the world, with sectors as diverse as manufacturing,

finance, and tourism. Despite the difficulties the nation still faces, including poverty,

crime, and corruption, it continues to play a significant role in regional politics and

the global economy.

Geography

Mexico is a country in southern North America that is bordered by

Guatemala and Belize to the southeast, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea

on the east, the United States to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south and

west.

The country is the 13th largest in the globe and has a land size of roughly

1,964,375 square kilometers. It features a varied landscape that includes towering

mountain ranges, wide deserts, tropical beaches, and lush rainforests. The Sierra

Madre Oriental mountain range borders the Gulf Coast, whereas the Sierra Madre

mountain range borders the Pacific coast. Mexico has a sizable central plateau,

and Pico de Orizaba, the tallest peak there, is 5,636 meters high.

Over 26,000 plant species and more than 500 different species of mammals

are among the diverse flora and fauna that call the nation home. Additionally,

Mexico is well-known for its breathtaking natural features, such as the Copper

Canyon, the most extensive canyon system in the continent of North America,

while the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, in which millions of monarch

butterflies migrate yearly.

Tropical climates prevail in the south of Mexico whereas desert climates

prevail in the north. Aside from natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, and

volcanic eruptions, the nation is also vulnerable to these calamities.

Political

Constitution

There are 31 states plus the Federal District that make up the federal republic

of Mexico. There are divisions in power between executive, legislative, and judicial

departments of government in which each are given a set amount of authority under

the constitution. Historically the executive branch has the highest power but since

the late 20th century, the congress has gained a larger authority. Personal and civic

liberties were exercised under the 1917 constitution, which has undergone several

amendments. It also lays out the nation's economic and political principles. During

and under Mexico's 20th-century one-party dictatorship, the president exercised

significant influence over the whole system.

The legislative department of the government consists of the upper and lower

house, the Senate is the upper house while the Chamber of Deputies is the lower

house. Deputies only have three years to serve while senators have 6 years to serve

but the members of the legislative branch can not be reelected in the next following

term. The basis of the election of deputies is by selection by political parties of the

five electoral regions and by-election and the deputies who have the most vote will

be elected. While the president is also elected by popularity and can only serve a
4 | P a ge
single six-year term. The president also has the authority to select their cabinet,

diplomats, high-ranked military officers, attorney general, and Supreme Court

justices. Unlike other countries, there is no vice president being elected in Mexico

but in the case of death, removal, or incapacity of the president, the legislature is

subject to appoint a provisional president.

Political System

A small number of dominant political parties dominate Mexico's political system,

with a number of minor parties coexisting in the system. The Partido Revolucionario

Institucional (PRI), ruled Mexico as a functional one-party state from 1929 until the

late 20th century and was the most dominant political organization in the 20th

century. There are numerous accusations that the PRI is subjected to, by rigging

the system through votes but even with the accusations they never lost their

candidacy for the presidency. The composition of the political party is usually the

president as the leader of the political party and the president will have the right to

choose the next candidate for the presidency. They were only able to hold an

election for the next presidential candidate during the term of Ernesto Zedillo who

manage to break the tradition in 1999. The first time PRI didn’t succeed over the

presidential candidacy is because of the act of Ernesto Zedillo. Their presidential

candidate was defeated by Vicente Fox Quesada from the Partido de Acción

Popular or the National Action Part (PAN). Which ended the 71 years reign of PRI

from uninterrupted power and control in the country.

Demographics

As of May 4, 2023, Mexico’s population is 132,764,995 which makes up 1.65%

of the total world population that is why Mexico is ranked number 10 on the list of

countries by population. Most people are living in urban areas around 83.8%. The

life expectancy in Mexico is 75.41 years old, infant mortality is 12.5 dead infants

per 1,000 live births, and deaths under the age of 5 is 14.5 per 1000 live births.

Mexico City is the most populated city in Mexico with 12,294,193, following by

Iztapalapa, Ecatepec de Morelos, and Guadalajara.

Demographic Trends in Mexico

Since surpassing the 100 million mark in its population, there is a burden in

the government to provide opportunities economically and social services. The

trend of migration becomes a way to reduce the population in Mexico. Most

migrants are young adults and go to the United States. If it wasn’t for the migration,

Mexico would experience larger problems due to its much larger population.

Migration paved way for Mexico to reduce the burden economically where in fact

it even helped the economy since these migrants have remittances of their

incomes from the United States. The religion of the country is mostly Roman

Catholic. Even though they managed to legalize same-sex marriage in all 32

states. But machismo culture and street harassment often occur. One of the major

ethnic minorities in the nation is the Indigenous people yet they are also the ones

facing most of the discrimination in the country. The majority of its population is

mestizo which is why people of color may face slight discrimination in the country.

Mexico is also a top study-abroad locale especially for students pursuing
