CHAPTER-3

MINERAL RESOURCES AND APPLICATIONS

3.1. OIL & NATURAL GAS RESOURCES OF ASSAM

Assam is endowed with Petroleum, Natural Gas , Coal, Limestone and many other minor mineral
resources such as Quartzite, Kaolin , Silliminites , Clay, Feldspar, Granite, etc. Assam is the pioneer State
in the country as far as exploration and production of Petroleum is concerned. Asia’s first successful
mechanically drilled oil well was drilled in Makum in way back in 1867. The first commercial discovery
of oil was however, made in the year 1889 at Digboi and this also marked the beginning of Oil Industry in
India. In the year 1959, the Oil India Ltd (OIL) and Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) were set
up and since then, these two State owned companies have been continuously engaged in the exploration
and production of hydrocarbons in Assam and the North East.
Assam has over 1.3 billion tones of proven Crude oil and 156 billion cubic metre of Natural Gas
reserves. Assam accounts for about 16% of India’s Crude output and 8% of Natural Gas. The wells at
Digboi, Duliajan, Sivasagar, etc also produce Natural Gas accounting to about 50% of India’s total
Onshore production. Some recent data are given below:

The Crude produced in Assam is being supplied to four refineries in Assam, namely, Digboi,
Guwahati, Numaligarh & Bongaigaon through OIL’s 1157 km long trunk pipe line with 212 km looping
from Naharkatia to Barauni and 35 km of branch line from Naharkatia to Digboi. The imported Crude to
Bongaigaon refinery is also being supplied through OIL’s trunk pipe line. Gas being produced in Assam
is being supplied to Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation, ASEB, NEEPC, Assam Gas Company,
Tea gardens, etc.
Based on Natural Gas and Naptha, Assam Gas Cracker Plant (Brahmaputra Chemical and
Polymers Ltd-BCPL) is coming up at Lepetkata, Dibrugarh with an investment of Rs.9600 cr. The unit
will produce 220000 TPA HDPE/LLDPE and 60000 TPA of Polypropylene. It is expected that the project
will start its commercial production by end of 2013.
Assam has 4 ( four) Oil refineries with a production capacity of 7 million tons. Production of Oil
of these refineries are given below:
