ABSTRACT
This study on suimbJe exhibition and presem~tion spaces for artifacts in Nigerian museums
was carried out to identify the adequacy of exhibition and preservation spaces for artifacts in
Nigerian museums. Observations from case studies snowed that most museums are not purpose
designed to accommodate the peculiarities of Nigerian artifacts consequently, the exhibition and
preservation spaces for different classes of Nigerian artifacts were not considered . For instance
artifacts made of clay or wood were housed under the same space disposition and the scale and
size of some of the artifacts were not adequately taken care of Most museum buildings do not
accommodate large number of people at the same time around an artefact, thereby making
visitors go in to the exhibition space one after the other than in groups. This causes delay,
crowdedness and circulation problems. In executing this project literature review was carried out,
case studies and descriptive research methods were employed. Primary data was collected
through oral interview while secondary data was through literature review. Data was also
collected from the record department of the national museum Lagos. All the data collected were
subjected to content analysis. The following solutions were adopted in solving some of the
identifiable problems in the design of museums in Nigeria. The building shall be purpose built
for artifacts, records, seminars (i.e. a museum) . Artefacts made of clay, wood and other materials
were properly separated according to their sizes and materials of which they are made of. High
level windows and adequate headroom were provided to enhance lighting and proper circulation
around an artefact.
