Dohā (Preface)
दोहा
śrīguru caraṇa saroja raja nija manu mukuru sudhāri
baranaum̐ raghubara bimala jasu jo dāyaku phala cāri
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज िनज मनु मुकुरु सुधािर ।
बरनऊँ रघुबर िबमल जसु जो दायकु फल चािर ॥
Purifying the mirror of my mind with the dust from the lotus feet of my Divine Guru, let me describe the
unblemished glory of Shri Rām, of the Raghu dynasty, who is capable of bestowing the four purusharthas*.
*the four fruits of human life: dharma, artha, kama, moksha
buddhihīna tanu jānike sumirauṁ pavanakumāra
bala buddhi bidyā dehu mohiṁ harahu kalesa bikāra
बुिद्धहीन तनु जािनके सुिमरौ ं पवनकु मार ।
बल बुिद्ध िबद्या देहु मोिहं हरहु कलेस िबकार ॥
Knowing myself to be ignorant, I invoke Shri Hanuman, the son of Pavana (the God of Wind) and ask for His
grace to remove all ailments of my body, impurities of my mind and to bless me with strength and wisdom.

Chalisa:
jaya hanumāna jñāna guṇa sāgara
jaya kapīsa tihum̐ loka ujāgara (1)
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर ।
जय कपीस ितहुँ लोक उजागर ॥
Victory to Hanuman who is the ocean of wisdom and virtues. Victory to Hanuman, the Lord of the Vanara (ancient
race of monkeys) and the light that illumines the three worlds.
rāma dūta atulita bala dhāmā
añjaniputra pavanasuta nāmā (2)
राम दूत अतुिलत बल धामा ।
अंजिनपुत्र पवनसुत नामा ॥
You are the messenger of Shri Rām, the abode of incomparable strength, the son of Mother Anjani, and you are
known by the name Pavanasuta (son of the God of Wind).
mahābīra bikrama bajaraṅgī
kumati nivāra sumati ke saṅgī (3)
महाबीर िबक्रम बजरंगी ।
कु मित िनवार सुमित के सं गी ॥
You are the most valiant warrior, with a body as strong as the thunderbolt. You possess the ability to destroy all
negative thoughts and You are the constant companion of ones with positive thoughts.
kañcana barana birāja subesā
kānana kuṇḍala kuñcita kesā (4)

कं चन बरन िबराज सुबसे ा ।
कानन कुं डल कुं िचत के सा ॥
You are of a golden hue and bedecked with gorgeous attire. You have beautiful earrings and curly hair.
hātha bajra au dhvajā birājai
kam̐ dhe mūm̐ ja janeū sājai (5)
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा िबराजै ।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै ॥
You carry the flag of Shri Rām in one hand and a thunderbolt in the other. Your shoulder is adorned with the
sacred thread made from Munja grass.
ṣaṅkara suvana kesarīnandana
teja pratāpa mahā jaga bandana (6)
सं कर सुवन के सरीनं दन ।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बं दन ॥
You are the embodiment of Shiva and the delight of Kesari. Your majestic and radiant aura is revered throughout
the world.
vidyāvāna guṇī ati cātura
rāma kāja karibe ko ātura (7)
िवद्यावान गुनी अित चातुर ।
राम काज किरबे को आतुर ॥
You possess all knowledge (vidya) and you are extremely intelligent. You are always eagerly serving the mission
of Shri Rām.

prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā
rāma lakhana sītā mana basiyā (8)
प्रभु चिरत्र सुिनबे को रिसया ।
राम लखन सीता मन बिसया ॥
You listen to the glories of your Lord with great delight. Rām, Sita and Lakshman reside in your heart.
sūkṣma rūpa dhari siyahiṁ dikhāvā
bikaṭa rūpa dhari laṇka jarāvā (9)
सूक्ष्म रूप धिर िसयिहं िदखावा ।
िबकट रूप धिर लं क जरावा ॥
You assumed your minute form to appear before Mother Sita in Ashoka Vatika (garden in Lanka where Sita was
held captive by Ravana). You burned the entire city of Lanka while assuming your fierce form.
bhīma rūpa dhari asura sam̐ hāre
rāmacandra ke kāja sam̐ vāre (10)
भीम रूप धिर असुर सँ हारे ।
रामचं द्र के काज सँ वारे ॥
You took your frightening, gigantic form and destroyed the demons (Ravana’s army) to carry out the mission of
Shri Rām.
lāya sajīvana lakhana jiyāye
śrīraghubīra haraṣi ura lāye (11)
लाय सजीवन लखन िजयाये ।
श्रीरघुबीर हरिष उर लाये ॥

You brought the life giving sanjivani herb from the Himalayas and revived Lakshman. The elated Shri Rām
embraced you.
raghupati kīnhī bahuta barāī
tuma mama priya bharatahi sama bhāī (12)
रघुपित कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई ।
तुम मम िप्रय भरतिह सम भाई ॥
The Lord of the Raghu Dynasty (Shri Rām) praised You profusely and said, “You are as dear to me as my beloved
brother Bharata.”
sahasa badana tumharo jasa gāvaiṁ
asa kahi śrīpati kaṇṭha lagāvaiṁ (13)
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं ।
अस किह श्रीपित कं ठ लगावैं ॥
As Shri Rām embraced you again, he said that thousands of people will be singing the praises of Shri Hanuman.
sanakādika brahmādi munīsā
nārada sārada sahita ahīsā (14)
सनकािदक ब्रह्मािद मुनीसा ।
नारद सारद सिहत अहीसा ॥
Shri Hanuman is blessed by great Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, Munisa, Narada, Sarada, Sahit and Ahisa.
jama kubera digapāla jahām̐ te
kabi kobida kahi sake kahām̐ te (15)

जम कु बेर िदगपाल जहाँ ते ।
किब कोिबद किह सके कहाँ ते ॥
Yama (God of Death), Kubera (God of Wealth), Digpalas (Gods of the eight directions), poets and minstrels
cannot do justice as they try to describe your glories.
tuma upakāra sugrīvahiṁ kīnhā
rāma milāya rāja pada dīnhā (16)
तुम उपकार सुग्रीविहं कीन्हा ।
राम िमलाय राज पद दीन्हा ॥
You did the favor of introducing Sugriva (King of Vanaras) to Shri Rām, who helped Sugriva regain his rightful
kingdom.
tumharo mantra bibhīṣana mānā
lankeṣvara bhae saba jaga jānā (17)
तुम्हरो मं त्र िबभीषन माना ।
लं केस्वर भए सब जग जाना ॥
Vibhishana became the renowned King of Lanka because he followed your advice. The entire world knows this.
juga sahastra jojana para bhānū
līlyo tāhi madhura phala jānū (18)
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू ।
लील्यो तािह मधुर फल जानू ॥
As a child, you easily leaped thousands of miles toward the sun with, thinking it to be a sweet delicious fruit.

prabhu mudrikā meli mukha māhīṁ
jaladhi lām̐ ghi gaye acaraja nāhīṁ (19)
प्रभु मुिद्रका मेिल मुख माही ं ।
जलिध लाँिघ गये अचरज नाही ं ॥
Therefore it is not a surprise that You leaped across the ocean with Shri Rām’s ring in Your mouth (in order to
bring it to Mother Sita in Lanka).
durgama kāja jagata ke jete
sugama anugraha tumhare tete (20)
दगु र्म काज जगत के जेते ।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥
By your Divine Grace, any task in this world, no matter how difficult it is, becomes attainable.
rāma duāre tuma rakhavāre
hota na ājñā binu paisāre (21)
राम दआ
ु रे तुम रखवारे ।
होत न आज्ञा िबनु पैसारे ॥
You are the gatekeeper of Shri Rām’s palace. No one is granted access to his abode without your grace.
saba sukha lahai tumhārī ṣaranā
tuma racchaka kāhū ko dara nā (22)
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना ।
तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना ॥
By your grace, one can attain all pleasures. Under your protection, there is nothing to be afraid of.

āpana teja samhāro āpai
tīnoṁ loka hām̐ ka teṁ kām̐ pai (23)
आपन तेज सं हारो आपै ।
तीनो ं लोक हाँक तें काँपै ॥
When you remember the radiance of your own powers, the three worlds tremble with your thunderous roar.
bhūta pisāca nikaṭa nahiṁ āvai
mahābīra jaba nāma sunāvai (24)
भूत िपसाच िनकट निहं आवै ।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥
Evil spirits and demons cannot come near when one chants the name of “Mahabir” (Hanuman, the Valiant one).
nāsai roga harai saba pīrā
japata nirantara hanumata bīrā (25)
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा ।
जपत िनरंतर हनुमत बीरा ॥
All disease, pain and suffering are removed by constant repetition (Japa) of the brave Hanuman.
saṇkaṭa teṁ hanumāna chuṛāvai
mana krama bacana dhyāna jo lāvai (26)
सं कट तें हनुमान छु ड़ावै ।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥
All those who meditate upon Shri Hanuman in thought, action and speech, are protected by him from all
adversities.

saba para rāma tapasvī rājā
tina ke kāja sakala tuma sājā (27)
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा ।
ितन के काज सकल तुम साजा ॥
You successfully executed all the missions of the Shri Rām, who is the Supreme one among Kings and ascetics.
aura manoratha jo koī lāvai
soī amita jīvana phala pāvai (28)
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै ।
सोई अिमत जीवन फल पावै ॥
And whoever comes to you with a sincere wish, you grant them limitless fulfillment in this very birth.
cāroṁ juga paratāpa tumhārā
hai parasiddha jagata ujiyārā (29)
चारो ं जुग परताप तुम्हारा ।
है परिसद्ध जगत उिजयारा ॥
Your glory is renowned throughout the four Yugas and your radiant presence is felt throughout the world.
sādhu santa ke tuma rakhavāre
asura nikandana rāma dulāre (30)
साधु सं त के तुम रखवारे ।
असुर िनकं दन राम दल ु ारे ॥

You are the protector of Sadhus (renunciants, ascetics) and Santas (saints). You destroy demons and you are as
dear to Shri Rām as a son.
aṣṭa siddhi nau nidhi ke dātā
asa bara dīna jānakī mātā (31)
अष्ट िसिद्ध नौ िनिध के दाता ।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता ॥
Mother Sita has granted you the ability to bestow the eight siddhis*and nine treasures to others. *The eight
yogic powers defined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the nine treasures of the god Kubera.
rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā
sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā (32)
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा ।
सदा रहो रघुपित के दासा ॥
The elixir of devotion to Shri Rām is with you. May you always remain devoted to His service.
tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai
janama janama ke duhkha bisarāvai (33)
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै ।
जनम जनम के दख ु िबसरावै ॥
Singing your glories, a seeker can attain the Grace of Shri Rām and forget the miseries of many, many births.
anta kāla raghubara pura jāī
jahām̐ janma haribhakta kahāī (34)
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई ।
जहाँ जन्म हिरभक्त कहाई ॥

Devotion to you takes a seeker to the abode of Shri Rām at the time of death and they are reborn as a devotee.
aura devatā citta na dharaī
hanumata seī sarba sukha karaī (35)
और देवता िचत्त न धरई ।
हनुमत सेई सबर् सुख करई ॥
Even a seeker who never worships any form of the Divine, and yet is single-mindedly devoted to Shri Hanuman,
will attain the state of bliss.
saṅkaṭa kaṭai miṭai saba pīrā
jo sumirai hanumata bala bīrā (36)
सं कट कटै िमटै सब पीरा ॥
जो सुिमरै हनुमत बलबीरा ॥
All adversities and sufferings are removed for a devotee who lives in the constant remembrance of the Brave and
Mighty Hanuman.
jai jai jai hanumāna gosāīṁ
kṛpā karahu guru deva kī nāīṁ (37)
जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाईं ।
कृ पा करहु गुरु देव की नाईं ॥
Victory, Victory, Victory to Shri Hanuman! the one who is the master of his senses. May your grace shower upon
me, like that of my own Gurudeva.
jo ṣata bāra pāṭha kara koī
chūṭahi bandi mahā sukha hoī (38)
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई ।
छू टिह बं िद महा सुख होई ॥

One who recites this Hanuman Chalisa a hundred times is released from the bondage of birth and death and
attains bliss.
jo yaha paṛhai hanumāna cālīsā
hoya siddhi sākhī gaurīsā (39)
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चलीसा ।
होय िसिद्ध साखी गौरीसा ॥
One who recites this Hanuman Chalisa regularly, attains Siddhi (liberation or perfection). Shiva Himself bears
witness to this statement.
tulasīdāsa sadā hari cerā
kījai nātha hṛdaya mam̐ ha ḍerā (40)
तुलसीदास सदा हिर चेरा ।
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा ॥
Tulasidas says, “May I always remain a devotee of Hari and may my heart always be Your abode.”
Dohā - Epilogue
दोहा
pavanatanaya saṅkaṭa harana maṅgala mūrati rūpa
rāma lakhana sītā sahita hṛdaya basahu sura bhūpa
पवनतनय सं कट हरन मं गल मूरित रूप ।
राम लखन सीता सिहत हृदय बसहु सुर भूप ॥
O Son of Vayu (God of Wind), remover of all adversities, embodiment of auspiciousness and the chief among all
forms of Divinity, may you ever reside in my heart along with Shri Rām, Lakshman and Sita.
