Laboratory Exercise No. 1
OVERVIEW OF CYBERCRIME
Introduction:
Cybercrime refers to criminal activities carried out using computers, computer networks,
or the internet. These crimes are often committed by individuals or groups with malicious
intent to gain unauthorized access, steal data, disrupt systems, and cause harm to
individuals, organizations, or governments. Cybercrime has become a significant global
threat, as advancements in technology and widespread internet connectivity have provided
opportunities for criminals to exploit vulnerabilities.
Objectives:
1. Describe the development of Computer and Cybercrime.
2. Educate readers about the concept of cybercrime and its significance in today's
interconnected world.
3. Provide an understanding of various types of cybercrime, including hacking, phishing,
malware, identity theft, and more.
4. Illustrate the impact of cybercrime on individuals, businesses, and society at large.
5. Raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and the need for proactive
measures to protect against cyber threats.
6. Promote responsible online behavior and data protection practices.
Procedure and Guide Question:
1. Provide a timeline of the beginning of computer and its development; and
2. Describe the first recorded cybercrime in history, and how does it commited.
1822 was the year that the first computer invented charles babbage it was a mechanical
computer especially built for mathematical calculations.
1837 when charles babbage innovated the analytical engine by making more advancement
in the difference engine.
Late 1800-early 1900 Herman Hollerith made the punched card tabulating machine that the

main purpose is for census work.
1943-1945 the first programmable electronic computer was made. They designed it to
encrypt the german codes.
1946 ENIAC (electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was finished in University of
Pennsylvania. It is composed of vacuum tubes that is used for calculation.
1947: John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley invented the transistor which is
a reliable small computer.
1951 The first comercial computer was available and it is the UNIVAC I (Universal
Automatic Computer)
1971 The microprocessor was developed by Intel and inventing the CPU in a piece of
single chip.
1975 The first microcomputer was released and it is the Altair 8800. This is the start of
personal computer revolution.
1981 IBM introduced the IBM PC to the public influenceing the PC market.
1984 released the Macintosh featuring the Graphic user interface.
1991 The World Wide Web was developed by Tim Berners-Lee. The development of the
WWW revolutionize the sharing of information of people around the world.
Late 1990s-Early 2000s The development and Innovation of computer rapidly grow and it
is the birth of digital age.
2010s- Advancement of computers developed many kind of handheld devices like moblie
phones, tablets and more smart devices. And it is also the start of artificial intelligence.
Present day Artificial intelligence is a breakthrough coming with new possibilities for the
future of computing.
The first recorded cybercrime in history was made by a computer science student at
Cornell University which is Robert Tappan. The Morris worm was intended to measure the
size of internet, Tappan also made a self-replicating program that infested the internet
infecting the computers in the internet. The computer that were infected by the worm will
slow down the computer down until they crash.

Conclusion:
The birth of computer was a milestone in the history of humans. The sole purpose of these
was to assist us in computing but it is developed in many ways that now we rely on them. the
development that was made was also used in innovating many purpose like the medicine world,
criminal justice world and also in daily lives of the people.
Through geneartions there are people exploited the use of computer by the form of
cybercrime like hacking, phishing, malware, identity theft, and more. So we need to be more
aware in using our computers or whenever when we are surfing the internet. Avoid going through
the sites that are risky and avoiding links that could hack your devices our account. Ensure the
link that are safe to enter to avoid any damages. Avoid opening links that are sent to you by
unknown people through the internet.
