Setalux XCS 1518 BA-45

- A new CPO acrylic adhesion promoter resin for plastic coatings

Distributor meeting, December 2019.

Introduction

• Plastic parts are increasingly used in car manufacturing.

- Estimation is 13 kg plastic for every car produced.
- Consequently, coating of plastic substrates becomes increasingly important as well.
- Poly Propylene (PP) is one of the substrate types and mostly used for “bumper”.

• Drawback of especially PP is the direct adhesion of paint on untreated PP due to:

- Low surface tension.
- Inert (no polar anchor groups).
- Non porous.

Substrate Surface energy (dynes / cm)

Glass 70
Stainless steel 64
Aluminium 59
Pretreated steel 45
Thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO) 30.5

Introduction

• Adhesion can be improved by

- Physical activation – Power - and manual washing.
- Chemical activation – Flaming, plasma- and corona treatment.
- Chlorinated Poly Olefine (CPO) primer – common adhesion promotor for PP.
• Drawbacks
- Activation.
- Extra process step.
- Not always sufficient to achieve good adhesion.
- CPO primer.
- Extra paint layer.
- Very low solids (5 – 7%) with no hiding power.
- Film thickness control
- Thin film : insufficient coverage possible.
- Thick film : delamination.
- Cold blend of CPO with acrylic resin (2nd generation)
- Resin – and Paint stability issue.
• 3rd Generation
- CPO modified acrylic resin: Setalux XCS 1518 BA - 45.

• Resin Properties.
OH value (on resin solids) 26.4 mg KOH / g
OH value (as supplied) 11.9 mg KOH / g
Solid content 45 %
Solvent Butyl acetate
Viscosity (at 23 ⁰C) 3 – 10 Pa.s
Acid value (on resin solids) 6 – 12 mg KOH / g

- Stable, turbid resin.

- No changes in viscosity or particle fineness when stored at 40 °C or -10 °C for 15 days.
- High compatibility with standard paint resins, solvents and additives.
- Apart from 1K - , also 2K formulations possible due to presence of OH.
