ROTOSTAT N units are rotary
diaphragm glands for the t
high pressures and speeds
‘The seal between the stationary: and rotating
parts is effected by sealing gaps which are kept
ied value by means of a patented
hydrostatic control mechanism -vhich permits
slight wobble and eccentric running of the shat
a result of this design principle, only viscous
fiction even at high speeds and
pressures, and as a consequence the heat
developed is only minor and calcu‘able.
jons_ with
fer of liquids at
The heat is dissipated through the leakage which
oceurs as a result of the design principle
The leakage losses are within narrow, calculable
limits,
Depending on the application, the following
models, whose dimensions are the same, are
available:
=> ROTOSTAT NX
* Emulsions and non = ROTOSTAT NW
lubricating liquids
ccaling systems:
GAT uses diaphragm glands, which are always
fitted wherever high contact speeds and high
pressures or minimal friction are required.
An inverse hydrostatic control system ensures
that the gap widths of up to 15m aie kept
constant even at 200 bar.
Elastic, pressure dependent deformation is ruled
out by a hydraulic compensation system.
Potential combination:
‘The products in the ROTOSTAT N series can
be combined with all other systems from GAT.

Versions:
© The ROTOSTATS are available as cartridge
elements for use in the customer's systems
and
+ as complete rotary unions for mounting as a
unit,
Further advantages of Series N:
«Free axial forces which would be transmitted
to a housing or bearings are precluded by the
design.
On seizure of the rotary unions resulting from
contamination or shaft displacement, the
ROTOSTAT N continues to rotate on the
internal seals.
+. The shaft and casing are thus not immediately
damaged,
© Rapid availability of the rotary unions it
ensured by replacement of the sealing
elements.

The bushing consists of 4 parts which
are bolted together in pairs (la + 1b
and 2a + 2b).
Pair 1a/Ib is coupled to the rotating
shaft (4) via elastic seals (3).
Pair 2v2b is connceted to. the
stationary casing (7), also by clastis
seals (9).
The pressurised liquid (8) fed in from
the easing is guided through pair 2a/2b
into a slot (6) located in the sealing
plane, this slot being connected to the
shaft bore (5) by channels in part 1a.
‘The sealing gaps 10, 11 and 12 are
located in a single plane, with insert 13 }
determining the gap width.

Operation
As a result of the service pressure p, a force F
is created in the slot (6). Gaps 10 and 11 divide
the service pressure in such a way thal, with the
pressure applied to the surface between gaps 10
anal 11, the intermediate pressure pe produces a
force F.
This equalises force F.
If an external force is now applied to bring the
system out of hydrostatic cquilitrium, the
following takes place:
Case 1:
An extemal foree acts on pair a/b from the
right.
This causes gap 10 to open, while gap 11
closes. The intermediate pressure p. increases,
thus increwsing force F,.
= As force F however remains unchanged, the
force resulting from F, and F pushes pair la/lb
ack into hydrostatic equilibrium to the right.
Case 2:
An external force acts on pair La/1> from the
left.
Gap 10 closes and gap 11 opens
The intermediate pressure p. falls, thus reducing
force Fy.
As force F however also remains unchanged
hete, the force resulting from Fe ane F pushes
pair la/Ib to the IeR back into hydrostatic
equilibrium.

Engineering Notes
- General:
‘The ROTOSTAT must not be modified under any circumstances!
11 is to be ensured that deformation oceuring in service as a result of pressure or temperature and
whieh reduces the bore, enlarges the shaft or allows the ROTOSTAT to take on a temperature of
more than 30° above that of the rousing, even briefly, is avoided.
Special seals are required from service temperatures of 80°C upwards!
Bores in the shafts should be located in such a way as to avoid imbalance.
For long periods of operation t minimum speed and high acceleration, a driver system may be
recassary. This consists of a driver journal on the ROTOSTAT which fits into a matching bore in
a rotating component or a driver ring.
Hydraulic section:
© the ROTOSTAT can be operated with all pre
fineness being nominal 20 tum,
surised liquids, the minimum permissible filter
© If the ROTOSTAT is among the significant power dissipaters in the system, the power loss
values must be taken into accomnt in the dimensioning of the pump assembly with regard to the
~ thermal balance.
© Heat development becomes less on use of an oil with lower viscosity
Ifa low temperature at the ROTOSTAT is absohutly necessary, a low viscosity oil (ISO 5 or 2)
and/or a flushing system must be provided in addition to adequate cooling. Please contact us.
In the case of repeated stroke motions with long feed lines, there is the risk of insufficient oil
renewal. The consequences (accumulation of diet, local heating) can be avoided by installing
hydraulic diverters at the rotary bushing connections.

Engineering Notes
+ The ROTOSTAT must not be used as a bea

ig, but the casing must always be supported on
* The rotary ROTOSTAT must be installed in such a way that it is free on both sides.
© Contact with the housing bore and shaft is to be radial only, and via the plastic seals without any
metal contact!
‘© The ROTOSTAT must only be fastened at the outer ring. It must never be fatened to the mounting
surface causes tension which impairs the hydrostatic gap control mechanism,
© All system variants require a perfectly fat mounting surface. Any radius at tho mounting surfuce
causes teision which impairs the hydrostatic gap control mechanism. Finely fineshed or ground
surfaces are required for the seat of the sealing ring, in the bore and on the staf!
© All edges and bores over which seals are slid during assembly must be bevelled or recessed to avoid
damage to the seals.
@ In order to ensure safficient. >
play, the locating bore should
have a G6 tolerance and the
shaft an F6 tolerance (at 20°).
The minimum distances X and
Y must be maintained for
correct discharge of leckage oil
chambers should be enlarged
to ensure good discharge of
leakage oil.
«All edges in the bore and on
the shaft are to be chamfered,
‘The transition at C is to be
smoothed with a polishing
cloth!
* The slots - in the bore and on
the shaft - must be at least 1 -
2 mm deep to ensure that the
sealing rings slide correctly .
The effective depth of the slots
is determined by the flow rate (
=>pressure).

and Maintenance
General:
Clean the parts well! (Without tr chloroethylene or similar!)
«Coat the bore and shaft with grease soluble in oil or with highly viscous oil
* Ifpossible, first insert the ROTOSTAT into the bore and fix it axially, then, slide the shaft in.
© The ROTOSTAT 30 N and 80 N can be slid into position by hand. With the ROTOSTAT 140 N

assembly jig.
« The ROTOSTAT must not be tpped during the installation process!
‘© Apply an initial pressure of 10 bar only and tum slowly. The rotary bushing should not resist turning
any more than a grease packed ball bearing of similar dimensions. If hard points occur, the bushing
is unevenly tensioned and the cause must be rectified!
