 CELESTE’S GREEN CHEMISTRY STANDARDS

As the world of chemicals changes in general, and the

cleaning industry seeks to become more environmentally
conscious, an increasing number of products on the market
today are labeled “green” or “environmentally friendly”.
While there are several third-party certifiers – such as
Green Seal – that will test a product and certify according
to their own protocols and green specifications, for many
years there was no universally established or agreed upon
regulation or guideline which companies could follow for making eco-friendly
claims.

This changed with the US Federal Trade Commission’s publication of the

Green Guides, the most recent version of which was issued on 1st October,
2012. The Green Guides were established to ensure that any environmental
product claims made by companies are not only non-deceptive but can also
be substantiated.

In addition, several years ago, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

implemented a Design for the Environment (DfE) program, working in partner-
ship with industry, environmental groups, and academia to reduce risk to
people and the environment by finding ways to prevent pollution. Through this
program, the EPA has evaluated human health and environmental concerns
associated with traditional and alternative chemicals and processes in a range
of industries. These analyses have empowered hundreds of businesses
to select safer chemicals and technologies.
The DfE program focuses on industries
that combine the potential for chemical
risk reduction with a strong motivation
to make lasting, positive changes. As
part of the DfE initiative, GreenBlue®
developed the CleanGredients®
database – the online resource for
green formulation®. The database
currently contains approved listings for
surfactants, solvents, fragrances, and
chelating agents.

Low or no VOCs
VOC’s – or Volatile Organic Chemicals – are carbon-based
molecules that could vaporize under normal conditions and
enter into the atmosphere. All Celeste’s Green Chemistry
products remain within the VOC limits established by CARB
(California Air Resource Board).

Low or no HAPs
According to the EPA, Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) or Toxic
Air Pollutants are “…those pollutants that cause or may cause
cancer or other serious health effects, such as reproductive ef-
fects or birth defects, or adverse environmental and ecological
effects.” The US EPA lists 188 Hazardous Air Pollutants.

SARA Title 3
This is the Title III of the Superfund Amendments and
Re-authorization Act of 1986 – also known as the Emergency
Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. Celeste Green
Chemistry products do not contain chemicals reportable under this
act.

No Known Carcinogens
Celeste Green Chemistry products contain no known or suspected
agents that cause cancer.

Use of Best Alternative Green Solvents

Celeste’s solvent-based products are developed using only solvents
that are listed in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s DfE
CleanGredients® database of solvents that are safer for the environ-
ment and demonstrate the following characteristics:

 Lower or no toxicity
 Low VOC’s
 Do not cause ozone depletion
 Low Global Warming Potential (GWP)
 Not environmentally persistent

Biodegradable
Celeste’s Green Chemistry formulations are all biodegradable,
meaning that the solutions will completely breakdown and return to
nature after customary disposal.

allows us to offer alternative cleaning solutions for products that are traditionally
approached using solvents or petroleum as the starting point. This results in
products that are not only safer for the environment, but are also infinitely safer

Sani-Tank is an amalgamation of natural based terpines blended together to
create a highly effective, natural solvent that removes organic deposits from
pump equipment, tank walls, and toilet bowls. It also prevents potential system
clogging failure. It is particularly suited to recirculating toilets, especially those
that experience severe malodors due to organic deposits on the tank walls, or
those that have been exposed to prolonged use of quaternary ammonium

The Celeste Parts Washer is designed to thoroughly circulate an approved

cleaning fluid around waste system/tank parts of various sizes to remove scale
safely and efficiently. Parts rest on a perforated tray inside of a stainless steel
tank while an air-powered propeller circulated a Celeste cleaning fluid around
the parts. A pressure regulator controls the speed of the propeller. The tool is
mounted to a mobile cart which can be adjusted to various heights.

The tool is designed with materials of construction and process flow configura-
tions that are for use only with Celeste approved cleaning chemicals and fluids.
