TO: Current Owners of Detroit Diesel Programming Stations

FROM: Detroit Diesel Technical Support

SUBJECT: Reprogramming Station Upgrade Kit to Support DDEC VI

Detroit Diesel would like to announce the availability of the DDEC VI programming station
upgrade kit. This kit has been designed to allow owners of current programming stations to:

• Program an MCM replacement

• Upgrade the fuel map of the MCM (within the prescribed limits of the engine’s
hardware)
• Upgrade the software level of the MCM
• Program a CPC replacement
• Upgrade the software level of a CPC
• Restore the MCM or CPC to original server settings

Note: This kit will support the MCM and CPC modules on all the Detroit Diesel engine platforms
(Series 60, MBE 900, MBE 4000, and HDE)

This hardware works in conjunction with the new Detroit Diesel Reprogramming System 7.0
(DDRS 7.0) software that will be available in February 2007. As is the case with all programming
station software, all current station owners will be receiving CDs through the mail (the CD will also
contain DRS 6.1 for all pre-2007 engine programming needs). The kit consists of 3 components:

Part Number Components of the MRS-2007UPDATKT

J-48631 The MCM / CPC Desktop Programming Harness
J-48634 The USB Link Adapter for Programming PLD Modules
125032 The USB Link Translator Box Kit

J-48631 –
allows the user
to carry out all
DDEC VI
programming
operations on
their desktop. It
comes with its
own power
supply.
J-48634 – is an adapter that must be used in
conjunction with the current PLD programming
cable (J-47013) when using the new USB Link
translator box to program a PLD.

125032 - The
USB Link
consists of 3
components, the
translator box, a
standard USB
cable to connect
to your PC, and
a “Y” connector
with a 6 and 9
pin Deutsch
style connector.
The 9 pin
portion of the
“Y” connector is
fully wired for
complete CAN /
J1939
communications
necessary for
DDEC VI
programming.

Ordering Information: Orders for the kit (P/N MRS-2007UPDATKT) will be taken through the
normal parts ordering process.

Questions & Answers Regarding the 2007 MRS-2007UPDATKT

Do I need to buy the entire kit to be ready for programming DDEC VI equipped engines; my
shop has other types of CAN capable translators? Yes you need all the components of the kit
to be fully capable of supporting DDEC VI flashing. The USB Link provides the reliability and
speed necessary for carrying out MCM and CPC flashing successfully. Attempts to use translator
hardware for flashing other than USB Link will not be supported.

Will I be able to use the USB Link for all my programming needs? The USB Link will be
capable of programming all Detroit Diesel controllers (all pre-2007 DDEC modules, PLD and VCU
modules) with the release of DRS 6.1 software. This software is scheduled for release by the end
of February 2007. The USB Link will be the designated translator box for new programming
stations shipped in 2007. Special Note: The USB Link’s ability to support a second CAN channel
of up to 500 KB is especially important for the future service requirements. The USB Link has
been successfully tested to work with the electronic systems of the new Freightliner Class 8 truck
and will become a required tool to diagnose that vehicle.

Will I need a new hardware key or ID for programming DDEC VI? No, your current
programming ID and password will work as usual with DDEC VI. The DDRS 7.0 software will
recognize your current hardware key.
Will my current programming station computer be able to run DDRS 7.0 software? If you
have a station with an appropriately upgraded Dell Latitude laptop (256 MB RAM minimum,
Windows 2000 or XP with the most recent service pack) then you should be able to use the new
DDRS software without any problem. The Dell Latitude (latest model is the 620) remains the
recommended computer for the programming station. There will be separate document coming
out shortly that will cover several new programming station and PC options available from Detroit
Diesel.

Will I need to register my DDRS 7.0 software? No, you will not be prompted to register the
software; your hardware key will be all that is necessary to open and use DDRS 7.0.

Will I need to load DDDL 7.0 on my programming station computer in order to perform
engine diagnostics after I install DDRS 7.0 software? No, the DDRS 7.0 contains all the
diagnostic capabilities of DDDL 7.0 plus the ability to program the 2007 modules. You should
not load DDDL 7.0 on a machine with DDRS 7.0.

PLEASE NOTE: For servicing DDEC and MBE systems prior to 2007 you will still need to have
both DDDL 6.3x (for diagnostics) and DRS 6.x (for programming).
