"We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the waters and lands on which we live and work,
and pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging”
Dr Vicki Karalis AM
President, Sandringham Foreshore Association
Dearest Friends and Members of the SFA,
This is a special announcement to help support the good work of the palaeontology team
at Museums Victoria under the leadership of Dr Erich Fitzgerald, Senior Curator,
Vertebrate Palaeontology, Museum Victoria Research Institute. The research centre needs
our help.
We are grateful to Museums Victoria and Dr Erich Fitzgerald , and the many community
helpers such as fossil enthusiast Ben Francischelli and citizen scientists for their
passionate interest in the Bayside fossils. Please support the research centre by giving a
tax-deductible donation: https://museumsvictoria.com.au/join-support/make-a-donation/the-

Dr Erich Fitzgerald and his palaeontology team need our community support. Exciting and
significant fossil finds continue providing us information about the prehistoric past and
evolutionary history of creatures. Ongoing activities require fossil exploration,
preparation, scientific evaluation and assessment of fossil finds, publication of findings in
journal publications, scientific research to better understand, and to archive significant
fossils for the MV collection. The Bayside fossils are now on display at Museums Victoria
over the next 18 months. So be sure not to miss viewing some of the unique fossils from
the Museum's collection, now on display.
With kindness,
Vicki Karalis
Valuable fossil finds advance science. These significant Bayside fossils were found by enthusiasts at
Beaumaris Bay and donated to Museums Victoria for all to enjoy. Their tremendous efforts help deepen
the scientific knowledge of the past. We are privileged that the research team at Museums Victoria
headed by Dr Erich Fitzgerald have written many research papers about these unique finds. It is an
example how the community can work closely with the research team. But there is more to explore and
discover!
Over 1 million people visit the Museum every year. The fossils provide a unique picture of what life was
like 5-6 million years ago. Bayside fossils also provide insight into the evolution of marine life and how
they respond to a warming world. Don't miss the beautiful display of Bayside fossils currently on display at
Museums Victoria.

Melbourne's Bayside suburbs are home to the most important urban fossil sites in Australia.
Extraordinary fossils of prehistoric sharks, whales and other sea creatures provide a unique
window on Australia's oceans from 5 million years ago.
Your help in funding the surveying of these sites and the discovery of new fossils will help us gain
critical insights into the history of Australia's sea life, allowing us to better understand and
preserve these natural wonders.

self-acclaimed role is to foster and promote good natural conservation principles to Bayside foreshore
management. Our current focus is to assist public education by aligning ourselves with scientific experts in
fields of conservation and natural environment, and to facilitate effective communication between
community – council and state governments – and established environmental science publications and
position statements.
The role of SFA is to care for and help protect our local beaches and cliffs, but also to educate, raise
awareness and preserve our local archaeological, geological, cultural, indigenous and heritage sites such
as the Beaumaris Bay fossil site.
