The Central Government of India notified revisions to minimum wages for scheduled employments effective January 19, 2017. Minimum wages were increased for various categories of workers including unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly-skilled workers in industries like agriculture, sweeping and cleaning, watch and ward, loading and unloading, construction, and stone mines. The minimum wage increases ranged from Rs. 333-438 per day for unskilled workers to Rs. 395-610 per day for highly skilled workers depending on the area and industry. Revisions were also made to wages paid to workers engaged in stone breaking and crushing activities in stone mines.

Increase in Minimum Wages

Under the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, both Central and State Governments are appropriate
Governments to fix, review and revise the minimum wages of the workers employed in the scheduled
employments under their respective jurisdictions. The Central Government has notified the revision of
minimum wages for the scheduled employments in the Central sphere on 19.01.2017. The increase in minimum
wages for scheduled employment under the Central sphere w.e.f. 19.01.2017 as shown in the table below:-
