Read the paragraph and answer questions following.
A clutch is a device for disconnecting and connecting rotating shafts. In a vehicle with a
manual gearbox, the driver pushes down the clutch when changing gear, thus disconnecting the
engine from the gearbox. It allows a temporary neutral position for gear changes and also a gradual
way of taking up drive from rest. The exact location of the clutch varies with vehicle design.
However, the clutch is always fitted between the engine and the transmission. With few exceptions,
the clutch and flywheel are bolted to the rear of the engine crankshaft.
The driver operates the clutch by pushing down a pedal. This movement has to be transferred
to the release mechanism. The two main methods used are cable and hydraulic. The cable method
is the most common. Electrohydraulic or electric clutch operation is used on direct shift gearboxes

There are four strokes in an internal combustion (1) ............ The first stroke is the induction or
(2) ................stroke. This occurs when the piston is (3).................. in the cylinder from top dead
centre (TDC) to bottom dead centre (BDC) and the inlet valve is open. The movement of the
(4) ...............increases the volume of the cylinder so that air and fuel enter the engine. The next
stroke is the (5) ...................... stroke, when the piston (6) ..................... in the cylinder. Both the
inlet and exhaust valves are (7) ............... and the space in the cylinder above the piston is reduced.
This causes the air and fuel charge to be compressed, which is necessary for clean and efficient
combustion of the fuel. Towards the end of the compression stroke, the fuel is (8) ..................and
burns to give a large pressure rise in the cylinder above the piston. This pressure rise forces the
piston down in the cylinder on the combustion or (9) ............... stroke. Once the energy from the
fuel has been used, the exhaust valve opens so that the waste gases can leave the engine through
the (10) .................port. To complete the exhausting of the burnt gases the piston moves upward
in the cylinder. This final stroke is called the exhaust stroke.

The main purpose of the braking system is simple: to slow down or stop a vehicle. To do this,
the energy in the vehicle movement must be taken away or converted. This is achieved by creating
friction. The resulting heat takes energy away from the movement. In other words, kinetic energy
is converted into heat energy. The main braking system of a car works by hydraulics. This means
that when the driver presses the brake pedal, liquid pressure forces pistons to apply brakes on each
wheel. Disc brakes are used on all wheels of most cars nowadays (Fig. 4.84). Braking pressure
forces brake pads against both sides of a steel disc. Drum brakes are fitted on the rear wheels of
some cars and on all wheels of older vehicles. Braking pressure forces shoes to expand outwards
into contact with a drum.

Calipers apply the brakes in a disc brake system, while wheel cylinders perform the same
job in drum brakes. Both use pistons and hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes. The main
problems here are fluid leaks due to seal wear or damage, and piston sticking due to
corrosion. Many experts recommend rebuilding or replacing calipers and wheel cylinders
when the brakes are relined in high-mileage vehicles - even if the original parts are not
leaking or sticking. Why? To reduce the risk of a comeback. Calipers and wheel cylinders
are the lowest point in the hydraulic system and tend to collect moisture and sediment. As
a result, internal corrosion often leaves pistons and bores pitted and rough. Calipers are
sold as bare units (new or remanufactured) or as 'loaded' assemblies with new pads, shims
and hardware. Loaded calipers provide everything your customer needs in one box and
with one part number, which makes for easier installation.

Read the paragraph and answer questions following.
One of the most important components in any engine is the camshaft. Whether the camshaft is in
a pushrod engine or an overhead cam engine, it controls the opening and closing of the valves.
This, in turn, controls the flow of air and fuel into and out of the engine which determines engine
performance, fuel economy and emissions. In pushrod engines, the camshaft is either chain or gear
driven off the crankshaft. In OHC engines, the camshaft may be belt or chain driven from the
crankshaft or an intermediate shaft. The drive ratio is always 1:2 so the cam turns at half the speed
of the crankshaft. This is because the crankshaft in a four stroke engine makes two complete
revolutions for every power cycle (intake stroke, compression stroke, power stroke and exhaust
stroke). Cam-related problems can occur for a variety of reasons. As an engine accumulates miles,
the timing chain stretches. The added slack in the chain has a retarding effect on cam timing, which
reduces compression and torque.
