Shallow Foundation-I

Ques.1: A strip footing of width 3 m is founded at a depth of 2 m below the ground surface in a
(c- Φ) soil having a cohesion c= 30 kN/m2 and angle of shearing resistance Φ= 35o. The water
table is at a depth of 5 metre below the ground level. The moist weight of soil above the water-
table is 17.25 kN/m3. [V.N.S. MURTHY]

Case A= assume the general shear failure occurs.

Case B= assume the local shear failure occurs.

Determine-
(a) The ultimate bearing capacity of soil,
(b) The net ultimate bearing capacity,
(c) The net allowable bearing pressure.
And the load/m for factor of safety= 3.

Ques.2: Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of strip footing, 1.5 m wide, with its base at a
depth of 1 m, resting on a dry sand stratum.
Take Υd= 17 kN/m3, Φ= 32o and c’= 0, use Terzaghi’s theory. [GOPAL RANJAN]

Ques.3: Using Terzaghi’s theory, determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing 1.5 m
wide resting on a saturated clay (cu= 30 kN/m2, Φu= 0o, and Υsat= 20 kN/m3), at a depth of 2 m
below ground level. The water table is also at a depth of 2 m from the ground level. If the water
table rises by 1 m. Calculate the percentage reduction in the ultimate bearing capacity. [ESE]

Ques.4: Using Terzaghi’s theory: Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing 2 m
in width, with its base at a depth of 1.5 m below ground surface and resting on a saturated clay
soil with the following properties:

Υsat= 20 kN/m3, cu= 40 kN/m2, Φu= 0o

c’= 10 kN/m2, Φ’ = 20o.

The natural water table is at 1 m depth below ground level. [GOPAL RANJAN]

Ques.5: calculate the net ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular footing 2 m × 4 m in plan,
founded at a depth of 1.5 m below the ground surface. The load on the footing acts at an angle of
15o to the vertical and is eccentric in the direction of width by 15 cm. The saturated unit weight
of soil is 18 kN/m3. The rate of loading is slow and hence effective stress shear strength
parameter can be used in the analysis c’= 15 kN/m2 and Φ’ = 25o. Natural water table is at a
depth of 2 m below the ground surface. Use IS: 6403-1981 recommendations. [GOPAL
RANJAN]

Ques.6: The square footing (6 m × 6 m) is founded at a depth 3 m below the ground surface.
Given: ex=0.60 m and ey= 0.75 m, determine Qult. The soil properties are c= 0, Φ= 33o, Υ= 18.5
kN/m3. The soil is medium dense sand. Use NΥ (Meyerhof) and Hansen’s shape and depth
factors. [V.N.S.MURTHY]
Ques.7: A chimney, with a rigid base 2.5 m square is placed at a depth of 1 m below the ground
unconfinedd compressive strength of 60 kN/m2 and unit weight of
surface. The soil is clay with an unconfine
3
20 kN/m . The weight ght of chimney is 60 kN. The
T chimney has a resultanttant wind load of 19.5 kN
acting parallel to one of the site of the chimney base at the height of 1.5 metre above the ground
surface. Determine
etermine the factor of safety with respect to bearing capacity.
capacity Use Mayerhof’s
recommendations. [GOPAL RANJAN]
