The decentralized processor modules are trouble resistant according the IEC 61131
standards.

If other types of problems occur, the comportment of the CPU 72x is as follows:

2.6.2 Power Supply Breakdown (UC)

A powerfail is triggered if the supply voltage UC falls below the powerfail threshold U PF.
Powerfail Threshold in
CPU 72x-T/LT CPU 72x-TH/LTH
the Versions…
Powerfail threshold (U PF ) typ. 16 Vdc 17 Vdc

The CPUs accept a power interruption of 10 ms (according IEC 61131-2 PS2)

without any consequences.
If the supply voltage UC drops below 17 Vdc and the internal logic supply UL is still higher
as 4.65 Vdc, then all outputs are switched off and the CPU waits, until the internal logic
supply UL drops below 4.65 Vdc. The application is not executed anymore and the ‘ERR’-
LED blinks. The application will only continue to work after a reset (UL < 4.65 Vdc).
When the internal logic supply UL will underpass UL 4.65 Vdc, a reset is released.

2.6.3 Overvoltage (UC and US)

The CPUs are protected against overvoltage peaks according the IEC 61131 standards. In
cases that the supply voltage is continuously higher than indicated in the technical data, a
destruction of the unit cannot be excluded.

24.05.2019, 43930700 System Manual MAS 72x, page 6.25

Decentralized Controllers MAS 72x Processor Modules CPU 72x

2.6.4 Undervoltage (US)

If the power supply of the digital outputs underpasses 17 V, a power fail message is sent
to the controller and the LED ‘US’ extinguishes. The outputs are switched off.

2.6.5 Cross-Polarity
The power supply UC is protected against cross-polarity, which is not the case for the
power supply US.

2.6.6 Short Circuit

A short circuit at a digital output produces a switch off of all digital outputs of the module
concerned and the red LED "S" lights on.
If an analog output is overcharged, the technical data cannot anymore be guaranteed. The
outputs are however not damaged if the current does not exceed 30 mA (not short circuit
proofed), no feedback message is generated.

2.6.7 RAM and RTC Buffering

WARNING
Non-rechargeable lithium battery
Injury from explosion
 Under no circumstances recharge the lithium battery

The lithium battery RBA 721 has a capacity of 3.0 V, 190 mAh. Assuming a typical current
consumption of 10 µA (at 25°C), this corresponds to a backup duration of 750 days. This
value applies if the CPU is never connected to the supply voltage.
If the CPU is operated from the power supply for 12 h per day, for example, this results in
a proportional increase in the backup time. In this case, the backup time is doubled to
4 years.

IMPORTANT
 The service life of the battery is restricted to 5 years even given optimum
backup.
 The battery must be renewed after 5 years even in devices that are in store.
 Typical current consumption at 25°C is 10 µA
However, current consumption may vary between 5 µA and 40 µA depending
on the temperature.

2.6.8 Startup Behavior

After switch on of the power supply the monitoring circuit activates the reset up to the
voltage is stabilized (max. 50 ms after surpassing the level of 4.65 Vdc). As soon as this
process is executed, the run time system starts in the Flash-EPROM.

3.7.2 Faults
The decentralized processor module is noise-stable in accordance with IEC 61131
guidelines. If other types of fault occur, the CPU 727-DT behaves as follows:

3.7.2.1 Supply Failure (UC)

If the supply voltage UC falls below the Powerfail threshold UPF, a Powerfail is generated.
Powerfail threshold (U PF ) typ. 16 Vdc
The data in RAM are buffered.
The CPUs can withstand a supply interruption of 10 ms (in accordance
with IEC 61131-2 PS2) without anything happening.
If the supply voltage UC falls below UPF and the internal logic supply UL does not fall
below 4.65 Vdc, all outputs switch off and the CPU waits until the internal logic supply UL
falls below 4.65 Vdc. The application is no longer being processed and the "ERROR" LED
blinks. The application will only resume running after a reset (UL < 4.65 Vdc).
If the internal logic supply UL falls below 4.65 Vdc, a reset is initiated.

3.7.2.2 Overvoltage (UC and US)

The CPU is protected against overvoltage peaks in accordance with IEC 61131 guidelines.
If, however, higher voltages than those stated in the technical data are continuously
present, the module may be destroyed.

3.7.2.3 Cross-Polarity
The supply voltage UC is protected against cross-polarity.

3.7.2.4 RAM Buffering

The real-time clock (RTC) and the RAM are buffered by a lithium battery with a capacity of
approximately 1800mAh.
The useful lifetime of the battery is approximately 10 years.

3.7.2.5 Start-Up Behavior

When the supply is switched on, the monitoring circuit activates a reset until the voltage
has stabilized (max. 50 ms after the 4.65 Vdc threshold is crossed). As soon as this
process has been completed, the operating system in the Flash EPROM boots up.

The decentralized processor modules are fault-resistant according the IEC 61131
standards. If other types of problems occur, the comportment of the CPU 72x is as follows:

4.10.2 Power Supply Breakdown (UC)

A powerfail is triggered if the supply voltage UC falls below the powerfail threshold U PF.
Powerfail Threshold in the Version –CT –CTH
Powerfail threshold (UPF) typ. 16 Vdc 17 Vdc
The data in the RAM are buffered.
The CPUs accept a power interruption of 10 ms (according IEC 61131-2 PS2)
without any consequences.
If the supply voltage UC drops below 17 V and the internal logic supply UL is still higher as
4.65 V, then all outputs are switched off and the CPU waits, until the internal logic supply
UL drops below 4.65 V. The application is not executed anymore and the ‘ERR’-LED
blinks. The application will only continue to work after a reset (UL < 4.65 V).
When the internal logic supply UL will underpass UL 4.65 V, a reset is released.

Decentralized Controllers MAS 72x Special Module CPU 727-CT/CTH

4.10.3 Overvoltage (UC and US)

The CPUs are protected against overvoltage peaks according the IEC 61131 standards. In
cases that the supply voltage is continuously higher than indicated in the technical data, a
destruction of the unit cannot be excluded.

4.10.4 Undervoltage (US)

If the power supply of the digital outputs underpasses 17 V, a power fail message is sent
to the controller and the LED ‘US’ extinguishes. The outputs are switched off.

4.10.5 Cross-Polarity
The power supply UC is protected against cross-polarity, which is not the case for the
power supply US.

4.10.6 Short Circuit

A short circuit at a digital output produces a switch off of all digital outputs of the module
concerned and the red LED „S“ lights on.

4.10.7 RAM Buffering

The RTC and RAM are buffered by means of a lithium battery with a capacity of
approximately 180mAh. The buffering is typically sufficient for 2 years (10A discharge
current).

4.10.8 Startup Behavior

After switch on of the power supply the monitoring circuit activates the reset up to the
voltage is stabilized (max. 50 ms after surpassing the level of 4.65 V). As soon as this
process is executed, the run time system starts in the Flash-EPROM.

4.11.2 Counter Inputs

The counter inputs are subdivided, i.e. they do not have a common reference potential.
This offers the advantage that the inputs can be operated with positive or negative
connection. The maximum potential difference is 50 V. The inputs can be used as 4
independent counter inputs or as 2 encoder inputs A/B. This setting is made in the
software and can only be set for all channels together. When operating as an encoder
input, channels 0 and 1 are used together, as are channels 2 and 3. We recommend wiring
up the inputs with shielded cables and to connect the shield to earth (mounting rail) over a
wide area. This input circuit of the inputs is as follows:
