THE GOOFY GAZETTE
SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 26 - 30:
We had a busy week learning all about apples! We filled the letter A with apple seeds (fingerprints!). We practiced writing the letter Aa on paper and in applesauce. We read through our Letter A book and circled all the letter Aas in red. We practiced tracing different lines, helping the worm get to the apple. We made some a-peeling apples by tearing pieces of red construction paper and gluing them onto our apple shape. We learned a new song, Apple, Apples (words below) and created hand motions (including sign language!) to go along with our song. We made pattern apple crowns. We put apples on trees-each tree had a number 1-5. We had to draw the correct number of apples on the tree. We practiced counting apples as we read through our weekly Scholastic magazine. We took turns driving the ambulance around. Whiling driving the ambulance to pick up the hurt animal and take him to the hospital we called out, Aa-aa, aa-aa, aa-aa for the sound of the siren. Once at the hospital we placed a bandage on the animal and returned the ambulance to the station! This activity was very helpful in reinforcing the letter a sound. We made apples and apple pie with green and red play dough, sticks, pie pans and accessories. We read Ten Apples Up on Top by Dr. Seuss. We tried to balance one apple on our head! We then made our own class book, How Many Apples Up on Top? We took our apple fun outside and made an apple roll painting. We LOVED this activity! We read a book and sequenced the growth of an apple tree. We played Apple Concentration. We cut some apples in half and looked at the two different types of seed patterns, star and oval. We then used the apples to make apple prints. We taste tested 3 different types of apples. We then graphed our favorite type. We had 5 friends that chose McIntosh as their favorite, 1 friend that chose Granny Smith as his favorite and 2 friends that chose Golden Delicious as their favorite! We sorted our apples by color and used the balance scale to see which apple was the heaviest, lightest and how many small apples it took to balance the scale with one large.
We learned about Johnny Appleseed and made our own pot to wear on our head. We then imitated Johnny Appleseeds seed-planting travels by going on a Johnny Appleseed Walk. We tossed apple seeds (grass seed) as we walked. We learned 4 new Sing & Spell sight word songs! (words below) Ask your child to teach you the songs and motions. During Storybook Caf, we read From Apple Seed to Applesauce and made homemade applesauce! Delicious!
