Drug Name Class Maximum Single Dosage with Vasoconstrictor Significance
2.0% Lidocaine Amides • Adult: 7mg/kg, Child: 4.4 mg/kg • Lasts about 60 minutes with epi
• Should not exceed 500 mg per dose • 34 mg/36 mg of 2% Lidocaine is inside 1.7/1.8 mL carpules respectively
0.5% Bupivacaine Amides • Adult: 2.5-3mg/kg • Longest acting anesthetic
• Should not exceed 225 mg per dose • Use contraindicated in children under 12 years old, pregnancy
• Should not exceed maximum dosage of 400 mg/24 hour
3.0% Mepivacaine Plain Amides • Typically used without epi • Available in with or without epinephrine however often used without
• Adult: 4.4mg/kg, Child: 4.4mg/kg epinephrine in dental settings
• Should not exceed 400 mg per dose
• Should not exceed maximum dosage of 1000mg/24hr
4.0% Articaine Amides • Adult: 7mg/kg, Child: 7mg/kg • Has thiophene ring which allows better lipid solubility allowing it to
reach receptors more effectively
4.0% Prilocaine Amides • Adult: 8.8mg/kg, Child: 6mg/kg • Most commonly associated with methemoglobinemia
20% Benzocaine Esters • Topical Application • Topical anesthetic
• Orajel®, not recommended for children under 2 years old due to risk of
methemoglobinemia
