Local Materials Used as Applied to Contemporary Art
Look at your surroundings, thus the things you saw were useful? If we take a look at it, everything is
useful. Everything can be a tool of expressing art. The chair you are sitting is an art. The table where you dine is
an art. Your wall decor and lampshades are all examples of art.
Today, we are now in a form of Contemporary Art that works with a global influence, different cultures
and technology based. Contemporary art shows different ideas that the artist wants to deliver. Artist
appreciates more the beauty of art without costing too much. Choosing local materials that are available in our
surroundings and a proper technique can be a tool in creating an artwork.
Young minds like you sometimes neglect the true meaning of local art, but let us not forget what Vincent
Van Gogh said, “The great artist is the simplifier”. So, appreciate the beauty you can create with the use of local
materials.
Local Materials used in creating art
LOCAL – this refers to materials that are easily available in our environment. This can be wherever the artist
find himself.
There are no boundaries in creating art with the use of local materials. It is just a matter of creativity and
proper use of techniques to create a unique art.
Here are some of the Local Materials used in creating art.
1. Bamboo–This is a common material used creating designs for household equipment.
Weaving bamboo strand is common in making kalakat wall.
2. Abaca–Is a strong fiber that came froma Native Banana found in the Philippines.
Some artist used this in creating beautiful formal attire, bags, basket and many more.
3. Buli/Buri – Is a common Palm found in the Philippines. This plant is commonly used
in creating Banig. Now fiber from this plant used in making creative products like hats,
bags and even home decorations.
4. Rattan–This material belongs to Palm family. This is used in making different
furniture, handicrafts and even building materials.
5. Mud Clay – It is a semi liquid mixture of water and any combination of soil. Artist
used this material through molding to create different forms of art like pots, mud
sculptures and other crafts.
6. Paper – It is a common material used in creating art. It can be art paper, newspaper
or any other recyclable papers.
7. Coffee – Coffee is a new form of art medium also known as Coffee Art Painting. It is
similar to watercolor but you will use coffee. By using media of different materials, you
can achieve different effects.
8. Leaves – Artist used any available materials in expressing art and one of that is Leaf
art. Collage making using this material to create an art is one of the best samples.
9. Coconut Leaf – This material is used by folding, braiding, plaiting and even weaving
which may have functional uses. It serves as modern artistic expressions wherein they
transform this simple leaf designs into decorative pieces, accessories and accents for any
arrangements and crafts.
10. Coconut Shell – Another part of coconut that is very useful in creating art is its shell.
It has been used to make different house hold materials by smoothing and carving the
coconut shell. Others used this to make designs for a living like key chains and other
souvenir products.
