Assignment 1 (August 19, 2023)
Probability and Statistics (MAT 361)

Prepare a hand-written solution to the following assignment problems. You need to upload a scan or photo of your
solution (pdf file) to canvas in a single file. Students can discuss the problem with each other but cannot share their
solutions. Similar assignment solutions will be penalized. A cover page must contain the student’s name, NSU ID,
serial number, and email address. The total marks for the assignment are 60, of which 10 are for the presentation
(e.g., clearly written solution, uniqueness, containing detailed explanation, etc.) of the assignment solution, and the
remaining 50 are for the following assignment problems.
The deadline for submitting the assignment solution is Saturday, 26 August 2023 (11:59 PM).

1. (10 points) A bag contains 250 balls that are either red or blue and either dull or shiny. There are 65 shiny red
balls, 120 shiny balls, and 80 red balls. If a ball is chosen at random:
(a) What is the probability that it is either a shiny or blue ball?
(b) What is the probability that it is a blue ball?
(c) What is probability that it is a dull blue ball?
2. (10 points) A card is drawn from a pack of cards. A is the event that an ace is obtained, B is the event that a
card from one of the two red suits is obtained, and C is the event that a picture card is obtained.
(a) What card do the events consist of?

(i) B ∩ C, (ii) A ∩ C, (iii)A ∪ (B ∩ C 0 )

(b) Calculate probabilities of the events:

(i) P (B ∩ C), (ii) P (B | C)

3. (10 points) Let X be the number of tries a player need to successfully complete an online word quiz Wordle.
Below the probability distribution of the random variable X.

x p(x) = P (X = x)
1 0.05
2 0.1
3 0.18
4 A
5 0.25
6 0.21

(a) Calculate the value of “A”.

(b) Sketch the probability mass function.
(c) Calculate P (X ≥ 3) and interpret it.
(d) Calculate cumulative distribution function and sketch it.
(e) Obtain the expected number of tries to successfully complete the quiz.
(f) Calculate the variance and standard deviation of X.
4. (10 points) A car panel is spray-painted by a machine, and the technicians are particularly interested in the
thickness of the resulting paint layer. Suppose that the random variable measures the thickness of the paint in
millimeters at a randomly chosen point on a randomly chosen car panel, and that takes values between 1 and 5
mm with a probability density function of

f (x) = B[2 + x + x2 ], 1 ≤ x ≤ 5

(a) Find the value of B.

(b) Obtain the expression of cumulative distribution function F (x).
(c) What is the probability that the paint thickness at a particular point is less than 1.2 mm?
(d) Obtain the mean and median paint thickness.
(e) Calculate the interquartile range (IQR) of paint thickness.
5. (10 points) When a fair coin is tossed, 40 points are scored if a head is obtained and 25 points are scored if a tail
is obtained. Suppose the coin is tossed four times and let the random variable X be the total score obtained.
(a) What are the possible values of X?
(b) What is the probability mass function of X?
(c) What is the expected value and standard deviation of X?
