Lag Calculator Setup for Drilling Operations

1) To set up the lag calculator, obtain a mud report from the mud engineer and a BHA report, which provide information on the drill string, pumps, and mud weight needed. 2) Enter details on the casing, drill collars, drill pipe, pump strokes, barrels per stroke, pump efficiency, and mud weight from these reports. 3) Also enter the motor revolutions per gallon from the BHA report. 4) Calculating the lag provides outputs to fill in the red box lagging mode for monitoring pump strokes against depth as drilling continues. Regular updates are needed as mud weight and other factors change.

LAG SET UP

Lag calculator set up for main log:

To start get an updated copy of the mud report from the mud engineer and a BHA report from
the directional personnel. Also the company man should have them.

Start by adding the drill string information from the mud report:

1. Add the last casing set in the well. (Surface or Intermediate) if there is a liner set; add it
in the casing slot. Add the ID, if you don’t have the ID then add the OD. Add the length.
2. **Liner 1 & 2 always stays blank.
3. Open hole is your bit size
4. DC = drill collar. Add the ID & OD & lengths (gives 3 options)
5. DP = drill pipe. Add the ID & OD & lengths (gives 2 options)

Drill Collars: if there are more than 3 listed but same diameters, just add 1 and add all the
lengths together.

Drill Pipe: There is the regular drill pipe and the heavy weight pipe.
LAG SET UP

Now let’s add the pump information & MW from the mud report:

1. Add the strokes/minuet (Pump Strokes - SPM) these will change throughout the
remainder of the well so you will need to adjust for an accurate lag.
2. Add the Bbls/Strokes
3. Add the Efficiency %
4. Check the box for however many pumps are stroking on your rig.
5. Add the most updated mud weight. *note as the well progresses you need to keep an
updated MW as they will dust up/down the mud weight or when they switch from brine
mud to oil base mud.

Adding motor Rev/Gal from BHA Report under mud motor info:

Now that all this information has been added, go ahead and select the Calculate Button &
then the Save Button. The rest of the information will then fill itself out accordingly to the
information you entered. If there is a wash out in the well, the best place to get that
information from is the mud engineer or Co Man.

Keep in mind almost all Mud & BHA Reports will look different, but they will all have
the same information. A little bit of hard work pays off at the end don’t be discouraged.
LAG SET UP

Red box set up depth/lag:

Lagging mode:
Check pump strokes (stroke counter) box.

Logging Parameters:
Add current depth
Add lag strokes from lag calculator
Divide the hole depth by 90.0 = lag Inc, Stks/100

Surface lagging: is length of poly flow from the shaker to the trailer. It usually is about 2.5 to 3
min for one roll. for an accurate lag, Shoot a gas test @ the trap. Time it from the start until it
gets to the red box and there is your surface lag.

Pump Properties: Use the same Bbl/Stroke from lag calculator and check the appropriate
amount of pumps for your rig.

Once all steps are completed select the apply button and then the ok button.

Congratulations you have now set up your lag!!  Now enable your wits!
