Inspection of the Aircraft after a Bird Strike
WARNING: THERE IS A POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK TO PERSONNEL WHO DO MAINTENANCE TASKS
AFTER A BIRD STRIKE. THE SAFETY MEASURES THAT FOLLOW ARE RECOMMENDED:
- USE DISPOSABLE GLOVES.
- USE CUT RESISTANT GLOVES OVER THE DISPOSABLE GLOVES.
- USE A DISPOSABLE COVERALL IF THERE IS A RISK OF BODY CONTACT WITH THE
BIRD REMAINS (ORGANIC MATTER) DURING FEATHER COLLECTION OR ENGINE
CLEANING.
- DO NOT USE PRESSURIZED AIR OR WATER TO CLEAN THE PARTS WHICH WERE IN
CONTACT WITH THE BIRD.
- REMOVE THE BIRD REMAINS AND PUT THEM IN A PLASTIC BAG.
- DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE, EYES, NOSE, ETC. WITH YOUR GLOVES.
- REMOVE THE GLOVES AND THE DISPOSABLE COVERALL AND PUT THEM IN THE
SAME PLASTIC BAG AS THE REMAINS. SEAL THE BAG.
- DISCARD THE BAG AS YOU DO FOR USUAL GARBAGE.
- CAREFULLY WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER.

CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.

/16.4 FT FROM THE WEATHER RADAR ANTENNA AND IN AN ARC OF 135 DEG. ON EACH
SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT CENTERLINE), MAKE SURE THAT THE RADAR DOES NOT
OPERATE. THIS WILL PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONNEL BECAUSE OF EMISSIONS AND
MOVEMENT OF THE RADAR ANTENNA.

1. Reason for the Job
After a flight crew report of bird strike events, you must do the inspections that follow before the subsequent
flight.
Airbus recommends that you do the inspection immediately.
NOTE: It is not easy to find and see signs of bird strike after time and/or bad weather.

A. General Information
(1) Description of the inspection procedure
(a) The inspections are divided into three steps:
1 First step: Walk-around visual inspection
The first step is a walk-around visual inspection of all aircraft surfaces. This is to
find signs of bird strike and/or damage (identification of impacted areas).
2 Second step: Cleaning of bird strike signs
3 Third step: Inspection
Examples:
First step:
You find signs of bird strike during the walk-around on the left windshield and on the
left engine fan.
Second step:
You clean the signs of bird strike.
Third step:
You do an inspection of the forward fuselage and the left engine/nacelle.
(2) Inspection preparation
(a) Before you start, we recommend that you get information from the crew about the flight
conditions:

- The engine behavior
- The smell in the air conditioning outlets
- The navigation and radio system behavior
- The aircraft configuration (position of the landing gears and the flight controls)
- The flight phase at the time when the impact occurred.
(b) Make sure that you have the related aircraft Post Flight Report (PFR).
(c) You must do a check of all the events in the crew report and in the PFR in addition
/conjunction with this inspection.

B. Safety Precautions
(1) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the landing gears Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-
481-001.
(2) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in the cockpit to tell persons not to operate the systems.

(1) Landing Gear Doors
(a) If the landing gear doors were in transit, opened during the event or if you do not know the
position of the landing gear doors:
1 Open the Main Landing Gear (MLG) doors Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001.
2 Install the safety devices on the MLG doors Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-002.
3 Open the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) doors Ref. AMM TASK 32-22-00-010-001.

(1) Energize the aircraft electrical circuits

(3) Set the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) pitch-trim control wheel to the full aircraft nose-up

(5) Fully extend the flaps and the slats Ref. AMM TASK 27-50-00-866-008 and Ref. AMM TASK 27-

E. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
(1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT) in position near the radome and the aft passenger
/crew door.
NOTE: As an alternative tool, you can use the STEPLADDER 3,0 M (9.8 FT) to get a minimum
height of 3 m (10 ft.).
(2) After the inspection (first step):
If you find signs of bird strike or damage:
- It can be necessary to use the ACCESS PLATFORM 12M (40 FT) - ADJUSTABLE near
the area that you must clean and examine (second and third step).

4. Procedure
SUBTASK 05-51-14-869-053-A
A. General
NOTE: All the necessary inspections are visual unless the text gives other instructions.
Operators can refer to the Nondestructive Testing Manual (NTM) and use the nondestructive
procedures.
(1) If there is damage to the aircraft structure, refer to the Structural Repair Manual (SRM). The
SRM has the approved damage limits and the repair procedures.
(2) If the pilot gave a report of:
- The engine stall, or
- The engine parameter change/exceeded, or
- The smells in the air conditioning outlet.
Do the related step for the inspection of the engine (refer to the inspection paragraph "Inspection
of the Engines and/or Nacelles").
(3) It is mandatory to open and examine the radome. In some special conditions, the radome can
have delamination without organic residue or signs of impact.

B. First Step: Walk-Around Visual Inspection

(1) For a better walk-around visual inspection, do the inspection at the checkpoints and while you
move from one checkpoint to the other.
The points shown give the checkpoints for the sequence of the walk-around visual inspection.
(2) Do the walk-around visual inspection with a good luminosity level (daylight or hangar light).
(3) Do the walk-around visual inspection of all the aircraft surfaces.
Do the walk-around visual inspection from:
- The ground
- The cabin windows
- The ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT) near the radome and the aft passenger/crew
doors.
(a) Do a check for:
- Signs of impact, scratches, dents, damaged paintwork or other damage during the
General Visual Inspection (GVI) of the radome
- Impact damage or signs of bird strike, for example organic material (i.e. blood
spatter, bird remains, feathers etc.)
- Fuel, oil or hydraulic leaks
- Missing parts.
(b) Record the area(s) with signs of bird strike or damage.

C. Second Step: Cleaning of Bird Strike Signs
(1) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 12M (40 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position (if necessary) adjacent to
the signs of bird strike or damaged area(s).
(2) The persons that do the cleaning must put on BOOT - RUBBER, GLOVES - RUBBER,
GOGGLES - PROTECTIVE and OVERALL WITH HOOD - WATERPROOF.
(3) Before cleaning, use a marking pen to identify the damaged area.
(4) Collect organic material for analysis.
NOTE: If you must determine the bird species because of the local regulations, Airbus
recommends that you do the steps that follow. If not, you can remove the bird remains
and do the cleaning step immediately.
(a) For large pieces of bird, remove different types of feathers (breast, back, wing, tail) and
put them in a re-sealable BAG - PLASTIC.
(b) For small pieces of bird feathers and/or tissue, remove and put them in a re-sealable BAG
- PLASTIC.
(c) For blood smears or tissue on the surface, remove them with a paper towel, gauze or
alcohol wipe and put them in a re-sealable BAG - PLASTIC. Include the material that you
used for the removal.
NOTE: It is not permitted to use water to remove blood smears or tissue because water
causes mold. Mold causes damage to the material necessary to determine the
bird species.
(d) Seal the BAG - PLASTIC and attach a label with the date, aircraft registration number and
area that the remains came from.
(e) Send the BAG - PLASTIC with the collected bird remains to the nearest local airport-
operations wildlife-administrator to determine the species.
(5) Remove the remaining organic material.
(a) Put all the remaining pieces of bird, GLOVES - RUBBER and other items you will discard
in another BAG - PLASTIC. Seal the BAG - PLASTIC and discard it correctly.
(b) Wash your hands with soap and water.
(6) Do a manual cleaning Ref. AMM TASK 12-21-11-615-002.
(7) Make sure that the pen marks are not removed.

D. Third Step: Inspection
(1) Radome mandatory inspection:
- It is mandatory to open and examine the radome. In some special conditions, the radome
can have delamination without organic residue or signs of impact.
(2) For each sign of the bird strike or damage that you found during the first step (walk-around):
- Refer to the related inspection paragraph and
- Do the applicable inspections (phase 1, then 2 and 3 if necessary).

B. Examine the engines for Foreign Object X

- The Fan Air Valve (FAV) scoop intake
on the thrust reverser
- The FAV intake on the inner wall of the

firewall.
If you find signs of bird strike or:
- Cracks
- Marks
- Distortion (specially at the connection
of the valve and the duct)
- Missing components (specially at the
location of the tubes of the inlet flange
and the outlet flange of the FAV):
(a) Do the inspection of the bleed-air X
cold-flow path after a bird strike Ref.

C. Close the thrust reverser and the fan X
cowls Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-410-

D. If the bird strike occurred at low speed X
and you found evidence of bird remains
during the inspection of the engines, do
the Level A Decontamination of the
Environmental Control System (ECS),
ref. AMM TASK 21-00-00-615-802-A.
To do that, use as a bleed source the
engine on which there was the bird
strike.
