Timeline
OF THE EVOLUTION OF MEDIA
PRE-HISTORIAL AGE
BEFORE 1700S
People discovered fire, developed paper
from plants, and forged weapons and tools
with stone, bronze, copper and iron.
Eaxample forms of media:
1. Cave paintings- this method involved
creating pigments made from the juice of
fruits, colored minerals, or animal blood.
2. Papyrus- is made from pith of papyrus
plant. It is used in ancient times as writing
surface to designate documents written on
its sheets, rolled up to scrolls.
3. Codex in the maya region- used to set
dates for rituals, often by linking them to
astronomical events. The pages of the
codices usually depict a deity and include a
series of glyphs describing what the deity is
doing.
INDUSTRIAL AGE
17OOS TO 1930S
People harnessed the power of the stream,
created tools and machines, established iron
production, and began producing a wide
range of goods, including books using a
printing press.
Example forms of media:
1.Telegraph- Is used for long distance
communication by transmitting electrical signals
over a wire laid between stations.
2.Typewriter- is a mechanical or
electromechanical device for writing characters
like to those made by movable type in printers.
3.Motion picture- A rapid succession of images
projected on a screen with the object placements
modified significantly between each image to
create the optical illusion of a continuous image
with moving objects. A representation of a tale
through moving pictures: a movie.
ELECTRONIC AGE
1930S TO1980S
This was the era that the transistor was
developed. The early computers and
transistor radios were created as a result
of people harnessing the power of
transistors.
Example forms of media:
OHP, LCD projectors- A moving image or
still image is projected onto a surface
using an optical device. By projecting a
light through a tiny transparent lens, this
device produces an image.
2. Transistor radio- is a radio receiver which
uses transistors to amplify the sound.
3. Mainframe computer- is larger than
certain other computer classes, such as
minicomputers, servers, workstations, and
personal computers, but smaller than a
supercomputer and has higher processing
capability.
INFORMATION AGE
1900S TO 2000S
People advanced the usage of
microelectronics with the introduction of
personal computers, mobile devices, and
wearable technology. The internet opened
the door for quicker communication and the
development of social networks.
Additionally, data, voice, image, and sound
are all digitalized. Our current era is the
information age.
In modern culture, communication and information
sharing primarily occur through the media. It is
easier to understand how information flows, how it
is processed, and how it impacts public opinion if
we are aware of its evolution. More individuals
worldwide now have access to information thanks
to new media technologies. People may now
create material and express their ideas thanks to
social media and the internet. This is important for
both people and organizations. The media has
changed as a result of technological
advancements. The way information is created,
shared, and consumed has changed dramatically
with each new medium, from the printing press to
the internet. The ability to adapt to these technical
changes and take advantage of new media can
aid societies. Media has a variety of effects on
culture and society. The norms, values, and
tendencies of society are reflected in it and
influenced by it. For the purpose of examining how
media influences societal and cultural
developments, it is essential to understand media
evolution. In conclusion, the media's development
is significant because it has a significant influence
on how we communicate, receive information,
interact with society, and take part in democracy.
For individuals, organizations, and communities to
adapt, flourish, and take advantage of the
opportunities and challenges posed by the
changing media landscape, staying educated
about these developments is crucial.
"The internet is becoming the
town sqaure for the global
village of tomorrow."
