CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a skill
training programme designed to expose and prepare students of
universities, polytechnic/colleges of technology, colleges of
agriculture and colleges of education for their industrial work
situation which they are likely to meet after graduation.
Consequently, this ultimate goal of the establishment of SIWES
has been successful as students do not just leave schools with
certificate, but with valuable knowledge and exposure in their field
of studies. This practical experience report also involves some
achievements, problems and enhances efficient and effective
achievement of the aims and objectives of the student industrial
work experience scheme (SIWES).
-4-
1.1 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The aims and objective of the student industrial work experience
Scheme (SIWES) are as follows
i. To aid the student in gaining technological skills realities to carrying
student aspirations. It’s an avenue for students in higher institutions
of learning to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course
of study, which are restricted to engineering and technology
including environmental studies and other courses that may be
approved.
ii. Exposing student to the methods, standard and equipment as
well as self guiding this world
environments in real life.
iii. Provide students with opportunity to apply their knowledge in
work situation thereby bridging/merging the gap between
theory and practical.
iv. To prepare students in for work situation they are likely to
meet after graduation.

1.2 WHEN SIWES WAS ESTABLISHED
Over the years, industrial and commercial activities have been
in existence. However, due to education awareness and
improvement, both education and population, the federal
government decided to establish industrial training Fund (ITF).
The industrial and commercial activities were going on;
employees fund was established by decree number 48,
October, 1971 with the aim of promoting and encouraging the
acquisition with view of generating a pool of indigenous
training manpower, sufficient to meet the need of the
economy.
As industrial and commercial activities were going on,
employers of labour were of the view that the theoretical
education in higher institution was not responsible to the need
of the labour, this was what promoted industrial training fund
to introduce a scheme to impact student with the skills of
handling employers equipment after graduation. The scheme
was established in the year 1973. It was withdrawn in 1978 to
1979; the federal government in collaboration with the
National University Commission (NUC) and other National
Board for technical education (NBTE) came on board to pilot
over the training. The federal government in November 1984
re-implemented its actions.
-6-
1.3 WHY SIWES WAS ESTABLISHED
Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing
concern among our industrialist that graduates of our
institution of higher learning lacked adequate practical
background studies preparatory for employment in industries.
Thus, the employers were of the opinion that the theoretical
education going on in higher institution was not responsive to
the needs of the employers of labour. However, more reasons
as to why SIWES was
established are as thus;
i. Provide an avenue for students in institution of higher learning
to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study
especially in engineering and allied fields.
ii. To prepare students for working situation after graduation.
iii. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling
equipment and machinery that may not be available in
educational institution.
-7-
1.4 SUCCESS RECORDED BY THE SCHEME
Siwes has recorded great achievement since its establishment in
1973. Thus among the success recorded are;
1. It has created avenue for student to contribute, share and benefit
in the administration of their country and dutifully partake in
nation building.
2. The scheme has also recorded a great deal of manpower
development that leads to greater

3.1 PROBLEM (S) / CHALLENGES FACED
For every good side, there is a bad one or insufficient side that is why
during my industrial attachment at option fm 92.3 akwanga I had little
problem or challenge par say which includes the following;
Although the management said we were only there to learn and put in
our quota, any issue of allowance will not be tolerated which really
affected us in one way which will have helped us in term of
transportation as some of us do spend more than what we expect
Despite the problem faced, SIWES is very significant and therefore I
call on the government to provide adequate finance or proper learning
condition during industrial attachments

4.1 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
The importance of the student industrial work experience scheme cannot
be overemphasized because it allows further development of student in
general and also make students to have practical knowledge in their
various field of study and as such more commitments and favorable
conditions should be improved.
As a beneficiary of this industrial training exercise, I wish on this note
express my profound appreciation to the scheme urging the scheme to
keep it up and to request for serious consideration concerning allowances
of students on attachment as it will help in one way or the other to ease a
little burden. More efforts should be put to see the steady supervision is
conducted in various organizations where students are running their
industrial attachment.
